Reward for Chatara. It wasn't one of his better deliveries, full and wide, but Ali chased it and edged to second slip, much as I used to do in my playing days, and Craig Ervine, brother of Hampshire's Sean, takes a tumbling catch.

  3. UAE 23-0 (run-rate 4.60)published at 22:22 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

Glorious cover drive to the boundary from left-hander Ali. The crowd is small but a good number are children and two youngsters unveil a bright yellow banner with 'nice one' written on it. Reminds me of Phil Cornwell as David Essex in Stella Street. Too niche perhaps, sorry.

"That was very well bowled, making the batsmen make a decision whether to play or leave. He didn't technically do a lot wrong. But I'd say it was a no ball."

  5. UAE 19-0 (Ali 3, Berenger 11)published at 22:18 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

Berenger is caught behind but agonisingly for bowler Chatara it is shown to be a no-ball. The foot was on the line but no part was behind it. To compound the issue, the batsman backs away to smear the next one over mid-wicket for four. And Ali flicks another when Chatara strays down the leg-side. Cruel game.

  6. UAE 10-0 (run-rate 3.33)published at 22:12 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

Panyangara has a world weary Matthew Hoggard-esque trudge back to his mark, which will not be lifted by conceding the first boundary of the day, a little wristy chip from Berenger over mid-on.

Across the Cook Strait and right up to the top of the North Island, England's women side are also under way in Whangarei - and they have made a perfect start!

Whatever was said in England's pre-match huddle has had the desired effect in the glorious sunshine. The tourists are fielding first and nab the early wicket of New Zealand captain Suzie Bates.

The White Ferns are 3-1 in the second over as Katherine Brunt's delivery is knocked into the hands of Danielle Hazell at mid on.

Tendai Chatara takes the other new ball, a taller, rangy paceman with a slightly unusual, chest-on, springy action, His first delivery produces an edge from Andri Berenger, but it is spilled by wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor.

Tinashe Panyangara may not be familiar to you. Well, he is a thickset opening bowler you would not want to mess with, in his 40th ODI with 42 wickets to his name. He maintains a steady line outside left-hander Amjad Ali's off-stump. Ali is rather fortunate with a leading edge that spoons over the in-field for two runs.

The average age of the UAE side is 31 and there are two 43-year-olds in their side today. A fine age that in my opinion, the prime of life. They are coached by Aaqib Javed, the former Pakistan seamer, who is a mere 42. In bright sunshine we have had the 10 second countdown on the big screen and we are all set.

The UAE team are in a black strip with red trim, and a large number of them have clearly been to the duty free for some designer sunglasses. The Zimbabweans are in red with yellow trim. And they have the longest anthem I've heard so far, with both female and male vocal verses.

We also have two umpires making their World Cup debuts in this match, Johan Cloete from South Africa and New Zealander Chris Gaffaney, no relation to Dean. It's time for the anthems.

Now let's have a look at the history between the teams. Well, there isn't any. It's the first meeting between them in a one-day international, but they did play a T20 last year, which Zimbabwe won by five wickets.

Zimbabwe have already played one match and lost to South Africa by 62 runs in Hamilton. They had the South Africans at 83-4 in that one but conceded 111 from the last six overs. One suspects they won't endure that kind of finish to the innings again today. But who knows?

"This makes a really interesting contest. It's not as big as West Indies v Ireland the last time we were here at the Saxton Oval but it's a game of cricket at the World Cup and I'm a huge believer that games like this make a World Cup. More for their development than anything else, but there will be stories and sub-plots here and it'll be fascinating to follow."

Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura: "We took a lot of positives from the defeat by South Africa and we're looking to bounce back today.

"It is a good wicket, almost the same as Hamilton where we played our first game. I think it is a good wicket to bat on and chase down a score.

"It is flat in the afternoon so will be easier to chase down. Hopefully we can do well with the ball."

  19. Quotes from the captainspublished at 21:43 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

UAE captain Mohammad Tauqir on batting first: "It looks like a good wicket to bat on. We would like to put on a decent total, we want 280 to 300 - that's what we're targeting.

On making their 2015 World Cup bow: "We played Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground so most of our nerves have gone. We're injury free, ready to play and have some fun."

On host venue Nelson: "It is a beautiful town. We have been here for four or five days - the weather is like back home in Dubai. We're prepared."
