"There's a definite plan to AB de Villiers here from MS Dhoni with two fielders out deep on the leg side. India coach Duncan Fletcher has had his analysts working overtime and MS Dhoni will have studied lots of videos of de Villiers batting."

  3. SA 49-2 (target 308)published at 08:59 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

South Africa skipper De Villiers is yet to find his timing, and Du Plessis has looked far from fluent: he has 11 from 24 balls. Mohit Sharma can be happy with two runs off the over.

"It's always a risky shot. He never really looked at ease today Hashim Amla, he's normally such a free scorer. But very good bowling from India. A great bouncer, coming to the batsman at badge height and it's always difficult to control from there."

Amla goes. Sharma drops short, Amla needs no second invitation to pull, but he picks out a back-pedalling Shami at deep backward square-leg. He makes a tricky catch look simple.

  12. SA 38-1 (Shami 5-1-15-1)published at 08:44 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

The panting Shami errs in length as Amla pulls from outside off stump for four through square leg. Eight off the over and that might be the end of his impressive opening spell.

"Indian street food - chaat, samosa and poori - attracts a heavy rush at the MCG during the interval."

  14. CLOSEpublished at 08:40 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Ooh, almost! India almost run Amla out - twice. He sets off in search of a suicidal single to cover, Du Plessis rightly sends him back, Ajinkya Rahane misses with the throw with Amla not even in the frame, and Suresh Raina also misses from within a few feet as he collects the ball backing up the stumps. A comedy of errors.

  15. SA 30-1published at 08:39 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Hashim Amla calls for a new bat - and a member of the coaching staff trots out with four to choose from. How many bats can you possibly need? I dread to think what his excess baggage bill is like at the airport.

    Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

It's been a pretty impressive start from India. Although they didn't enjoy the best of series before this World Cup, what they do have is experience of bowling on Australian pitches. They'll also be pleased not to be bowling at Australia. It will feel like a completely new tour for them."

  17. SA 28-1 (target 308)published at 08:34 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

The rubber-wristed Amla whips Shami just short of the man at square leg, then has to hurry to make his ground as he takes a single to cover. Du Plessis ends the over with a charge-and-miss at the pace bowler. The pressure builds.

    David Hussey
Former Australia batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"It should be a gettable target. More teams are scoring 300 now as a par. With the change in the fielding restrictions to just being allowed four outside the circle, it makes these sorts of chases much more reachable. But I reckon it will also be quite a tight finish."

  19. SA 26-1 (Amla 13, Du Plessis 3)published at 08:30 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Mohit Sharma replaces Umesh Yadav. With a little skip at the start of his run, he locates Amla's outside edge as the batsman attempts to work to leg - and the ball flies through the recently vacated first slip region. India captain MS Dhoni strikes his Bruce Forsyth pose behind the stumps as he ponders that fielding change.
