  1. SA 19-1 (target 308)published at 08:25 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

You'd never believe it, but Mohammed Shami is only 24, external. I'm not sure I'm having that. Talk about a heavy paper round. A stubbled face and widows peaks big enough to make his forehead look like a profile of the Loch Ness monster, he keeps it tight once more and now has figures of 1-5 off three overs.

  3. SA 17-1 (target 308)published at 08:21 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Kohli, the catcher, is surely the most intense man ever to step foot on a cricket pitch - all glaring eyes and furrowed brows as he prowls the infield. Needless to say, he's up for this one too. Faf du Plessis off the mark as Yadav concedes five off the over. Amla untroubled so far.

  4. How's stat?!published at 08:21 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

South Africa will have to break an MCG record if they are to chase down India's 307-7. Here are the top five successful run chases here:

    • 297-4: Australia v England, 2011

    • 291-5: Australia v New Zealand, 2007

    • 273-6: West Indies v Australia, 1985

    • 272-7: South Africa v Australia, 2009

    • 270-4: Australia v England, 2014

  5. SA 12-1 (Shami 2-1-3-1)published at 08:17 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

A wicket maiden for Shami and the thousand of India fans in the crowd make themselves heard again.

"There's that crowd noise you were talking about. It's a disappointing innings from Quinton De Kock. He didn't really get a feel of the tempo of the game and he's just mistimed a drive."

  7. WICKETpublished at 08:12 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

The breakthrough. Shami bowls full and outside off stump. De Kock's eyes light up as he drives. Captain Virat Kohli takes a smart catch tumbling forward at mid-off. The crowd goes wild. First blood to India. It seems I've forgotten how to write proper sentences.

  9. SA 12-0 (target 308)published at 08:10 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Yadav, whose flat-top haircut would not look out of place on a Lego man, maintains an admirably fuller length - until he pins De Kock with one in the unmentionables as the left-hander tries to pull. There'll be a nasty bruise there in the morning.

No shortage of energy from the bustling Shami, who already has beads of sweat on his forehead on this sticky Melbourne evening. A wide over Amla's head is the highlight of that over.

"It could have been more for South Africa to chase. The South Africans finished off the innings well and Dale Steyn has taken some of that India momentum out of the game. It could still be a difficult chase once the pitch quickens up a touch and the dew from the lights starts to take effect."

Quinton de Kock may well have been glancing through the record books during his tea, judging by that wild swipe at Umesh Yadav off the first ball he faced. Top edge. Over the keeper. One bounce. Four. Nothing like a little sighter...

While we wait for South Africa to begin their chase of 308 to beat India, let me fill you in on Sri Lanka's narrow escape against Afghanistan.

Sri Lanka, who reached the final in 2011, made hard work of chasing a modest 233, slipping to 2-2, 18-3 and 51-4 in Dunedin in Pool A.

It needed a superb century from veteran Mahela Jayawardene to rescue them, but there was still doubt over the outcome of the match until Thisara Perera smashed an unbeaten 47 off 26 balls. Victory was sealed with four wickets in hand and 10 balls to spare.
