Thanks for introducing the new man, Barry. We should work together more often. For those who don't know, this is the David Miler who smashed 138 not out off 92 balls in South Africa's win over Zimbabwe in their World Cup opener. Five singles off that Ashwin over.

"AB was backing the fact there would be no direct hit, but it was a magnificent throw from the deep. David Miller scored a great century against Zimbabwe, but how does he handle an occasion like this?"

Quick he may be, but De Villiers is not rapid enough. He is run out by a superb throw from Mohit Sharma from deep point as he chased a second run. The fielder made good ground to his left, the release was quick, the throw was flat and within inches of the stumps. Wicketkeeper MS Dhoni sealed the deal.

"The volume in this ground seems to be continually escalating. Sometimes the batsmen are getting into difficulties when running between the wickets because they just can't hear each other."

  5. It's a record!published at 09:33 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

    Kalika Mehta
    BBC Sport in Melbourne

"The crowd registered at 116 decibels during the break as it set a first-world world record for a decibel count at a World Cup cricket match. If the count had been taken while Shikhar Dhawan was sending the ball over the rope, there's no doubt it would have been quite a few notches higher.

"The crowd have quietened a great deal during South Africa's innings, so much so that the incessant ringing of an alarm was the loudest thing that could be heard in the first 10 overs.

"The odd boundary brings about a smattering of applause from the outnumbered South African fans alongside the DJ's blasts of Katy Perry's biggest hit. However, the loudest cheers are now being reserved for the loss of wickets, close run-outs and bump balls."

  6. SA 107-2 (Du Plessis 44, De Villiers 29)published at 09:33 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Ravichandran Ashwin, India's premier spinner, into the attack. He doesn't go for seven an over very often, so you suspect something has to give here. Du Plessis can't pierce the off-side field... so he goes over the top off the back foot. A streaky edge for four as he attempts to repeat the shot completes a profitable over for South Africa.

"I faced the first ever ball in floodlit cricket during the Packer World Series. It was a no-ball. The lighting wasn't good, so it was hard to pick up the ball. Back then they had eight-ball overs in Australia - as a batsman I loved that. It meant if you got on a roll, you had two extra deliveries."

  8. SA 97-2 (target 308)published at 09:29 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Best friends and also the quickest runners in world cricket? I can't think of too many players who are faster between the wickets than De Villiers and Du Plessis. They need that speed as they scamper a couple of tight singles off Yadav. They know they need to get a wriggle on if they are to win this game as the required run rate reaches 7.27 an over.

  9. Scorecard updatepublished at 09:26 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

  10. SA 92-2 (target 308)published at 09:25 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Now that's more like it from South Africa. Eight runs off that Jadeja over, most notably a powerful sweep by De Villiers that brings up the half-century stand. Pats on the back all round.

  12. SA 84-2 (Du Plessis 30, De Villiers 20)published at 09:23 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Du Plessis's default response to being tied down is to give the bowler the charge. Even the pace of Umesh Yadav doesn't cow him as he top-edges an ugly swat over keeper Dhoni's head for four. It might not be pretty but at least he's still there. The partnership is worth 44 off 52 balls.

  14. SA 79-2 (Du Plessis 26, De Villiers 19)published at 09:19 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

De Villiers and Du Plessis are best mates. Went to the same school. Best man at each other's weddings. They may well share toothpaste too. Can you think of two closer cricketers?

    Barry Richards

"Du Plessis has got that axeman-type grip, which normally means lots of bottom hand in the stroke, but that was a much more controlled shot down the ground, keeping the ball along the deck."

  16. SA 74-2 (target 308)published at 09:15 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

The athletic right-arm quick Umesh Yadav glides to the delivery crease, but he serves up a full bunger and Faf Du Plessis smashes the ball straight down the ground. A short one is then top-edged for another boundary. Go hard or go home.

"Full marks to the Indian quicks, they've done a superb job to restrain the start of this South Africa innings. There's some free-scoring players at the top of the order, who've not had anything to put away."

  18. Drinks breakpublished at 09:10 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

I spoke too soon. Normal service is resumed with two singles off that Jadeja over. Time for a drink.

  19. SA 61-2 (target 308)published at 09:08 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

The first boundary for five overs is followed next ball by another as De Villiers finally locates the middle of his bat. A meaty pull, then a swat through extra cover as he gives Mohit the charge. Here we go.
