  4. 100 for Jayawardenepublished at 05:08 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Take a bow, Mr Jayawardene. The old master himself does it again for his country, flicking a single off his hips to bring up his 19th ODI century, and his fourth in a World Cup. One of the all-time greats. His 100 today took 118 balls.

Finally Afghanistan make Sri Lanka pay for some poor running between the wickets - Nabi's direct hit sends skipper Angelo Mathews packing. Is there still hope for the associates? The partnership ends on 126.

"Our mid-innings predictions are looking a bit better. Whatever happens it has been a good game and Afghanistan will take a lot of good things. If they'd had a couple of 'dead-eye Dicks' in the field they would have got a couple of run-outs and probably won the game but I've been very impressed with their pace bowling in particular, which looks as good as a lot of the so-called top teams."

On a bouncy MCG pitch, the Shikhar Dhawan has hit eight fours in his dashing unbeaten 55 - he has just been dropped by Hashim Amla at backward point - while the ever-dangerous Virat Kohli has moved to 26 without alarm.

Steady as she goes for Sri Lanka... another couple knocked from their target. Incidentally, do you think Afghanistan coach Andy Moles has a look of Brookside's Sinbad? That's one for fans of nineties soaps!

Mahela survives - replays showing the delivery from Dawlat nipped back in and caught the batsman's back pocket on its way through to the keeper.

  11. Reviewpublished at 04:57 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Have Afghanistan made a breakthrough. They review a caught behind decision against Mahela after the umpire says not out.

  12. SL 173-4 (target 233)published at 04:56 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

The pigeons are beginning to circle and land on the outfield on this hazy, late afternoon in Dunedin. Shapoor is still running in hard and Angelo Mathews greets him with a flowing cover drive for four. Two more singles put Mahela on the brink of a century. He's 97 not out.

  14. SL 167-4 (need 66 more to win)published at 04:51 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

"Go Sri Lanka, go," chant the increasingly jubilant Sri Lankan supporters as Mahela Jayawardene takes on Dawlat Zadran and hammers six over cow corner. There's a real clunk every time the ball hits the middle of Jaya's bat - don't be surprised if another of his wands snaps in half.

"Jayawardene is so balanced, he hits the ball late and in the middle of the bat, he doesn't have to have a big flourish. Because he hits it in the middle it races out to the boundary."

  16. SL 157-4 (target 233)published at 04:47 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

The Sri Lankan supporters are banging their own drum in the crowd. And why not? Their side have showed good resolve here. Mahela is closing on a century now, just 12 runs needed. Five singles shaved from the total.

  18. Powerplaypublished at 04:42 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

When it matters, the big players stick their hands up. Mahela Jayawardene and Angelo Mathews have rescued Sri Lanka today, and they bring up their hundred partnership off 144 balls. The powerplay it might be, but there's no risk-taking from the 2011 finalists. Just steady accumulation - five from the over.

"Over the last five or six overs it looks like Sri Lanka have got in a more comfortable position. Jayawardene can control it right to the end as long as Mathews maintains the support role."

  20. SL 147-4 (need 86 more to win)published at 04:35 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Mirwais Ashraf gets in close to the stumps and bowls a nice, tidy line and length. When he does stray, however, Angelo Mathews helps himself to four down the leg side. Time for drinks. And the powerplay.
