Thisara Perera finishes on 47 off 26 balls, his knock including six fours and one six. That's how you drag your side over the line.

  2. Champagne momentpublished at 05:43 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Thisara Perera hammers four over extra cover, swirls the bat in his hands and embraces Jeevan Mendis. The Sri Lankans are home and hosed... but they've been pushed all the way by Afghanistan.

"It has been a very honest effort by the Afghanistan team as a group but perhaps we have got to the stage where just a lack of experience creeps in."

  4. SL 230-6 (target 233)published at 05:42 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

The field is spread as the runs Afghanistan have left to defend are slowly eaten up. Thisara Perera's big hitting has given the associates no choice, and it plays into the Sri Lankan's hands as they push ones and twos into the gaps and then the 50 partnership comes up off 39 balls when Perera slices four past backward point. Just three needed now. All over?

  5. Appeal - not outpublished at 05:39 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Jeevan Mendis is given out caught behind after trying to guide Hamid Hassan down to third man. The batsman reviews, however, and replays show there was no edge. A reprieve.

  6. India v South Africa updatepublished at 05:37 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Kohli goes! That's the one that South Africa wanted. Leg-spinner Imran Tahir drops short, Kohli pulls... but straight to Faf du Plessis at mid-wicket. Kohli is an angry man as he stomps off - and rightly so. A gift for South Africa.

  7. SL 219-6 (target 233)published at 05:36 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Smiles are starting to break out in the Sri Lankan dressing room, except for Mahela Jayawardene who looks anxious as he sits still padded up on a plastic chair. Twelve runs from the over have put the boys in dark blue and yellow firmly in charge.

  8. Sixpublished at 05:33 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Thisara Perera hammers a six straight down the ground off Dawlat Zadran, then carves four over backward point. Sri Lanka have taken this game by the scruff off the neck now.

    Warren Lees
Ex-New Zealand wicketkeeper on BBC Test Match Special

"Perera is the key, the one they have to deny. He can't keep swinging through an arc outside off-stump, you've got to get it up there on his toes."

  10. SL 207-6 (target 233)published at 05:31 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Left-arm quick Shapoor sends down his final over and rues Thisara Perera's good luck as a wild swish flies past the keeper and to the boundary for a fortuitous four. A half-tracker is then smashed into the leg side but straight to the fielder - good running brings them back for two, then a lofted shot down to third man produces another brace. Strapping all-rounder Perera is hitting the ball hard and adopting the positive approach.

"Afghanistan need to put pressure on the end of the over. I think they need to bowl full, on middle and off. It opens up too many gaps in the field if you bowl short."

Leftie Dhawan has flayed his way to 82 off 92 balls, while Kohli - centurion in India's opening win over Pakistan - has 37 to his name despite hitting only two fours.

  14. SL 197-6 (target 233)published at 05:26 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Afghanistan have managed to get the required run-rate above seven an over now, but they have a dangerous foe in Thisara Perera who belts four through the off side and then a single down to mid-on. The ball's like a tracer bullet when TP hits it. Nine from the over.

  16. SL 188-6 (need 45 off 36)published at 05:21 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Two lefties at the crease now and Jeevan Mendis is denied a four down the ground by a diving stop at mid-off. Three from the over.

  18. SL 185-6 (target 233)published at 05:18 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Mirwais Ashraf's run-up in delivery is so slow, he almost comes to a complete stop before sending one down. He does, however, know how to bowl a nagging line and length and keeps the pressure on Sri Lanka, who are relieved to see Thisara Perera's chipped drive drop short of Shapoor at mid-off.

  20. SL 183-6 (Hasan 7-0-31-3)published at 05:15 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Hamid Hassan has got the wickets of Mahela Jaywardene and Kumar Sangakkara against his name today. He's won at cricket top trumps, that's for sure. He comes round the wicket to the new batsman, the left-handed Thisara Perera, but his length is too short and he's clattered past backward point for four.
