"Moeen is actually playing in a very restrained manner, with the odd punctuation of a straight six. But we can see how sides can accelerate in the late overs if they have wickets in hand. What a relief it will be for England's middle order if they can come in off the back of a very solid base."

  2. Eng 91-0 (Moeen strike-rate 120)published at 23:08 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Majid is getting even slower, down at 69k's. He could almost bowl in a built-up area. It's not as if he has got the batsmen in two minds yet. Moeen is playing with such assurance that only an indiscretion on his part could bring about his dismissal. The bagpipes ring out, almost plaintively though it seems.

  3. Six - Eng 89-0 (Bell 23, Moeen 58)published at 23:05 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Richie Berrington is the fifth bowler used by Scotland, and the third to be hit for six by Moeen. What an exquisite stroke it was too, the most sublime straight bat, merely pushing through the line. Effortless.

Ben Wear:, external No excuses! England should be getting 380 minimum against this attack!

Rossi Biddle:, external After 12.2 overs Eng are 75-0 when NZ were 125-2. given our negative NRR we might need to start to increase this speed.

  5. Eng 82-0 (run-rate 5.85)published at 23:02 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Majid gets through his overs quickly as all spinners should, but the actual speed of the delivery is extremely measured, around 74k's, roughly 45mph. The batsmen have time to play several shots to each ball but are happy to collect a single apiece.

    Jeremy Coney
Ex-New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

"It is all very comfortable for the batsmen. Ali is under no pressure whatsoever to do anything. He can defend a ball because he knows in the next few deliveries he will have something to score from. It is bad for Scotland but a good chance for England to build some confidence."

  7. Fifty for Moeen - Eng 80-0 (Bell 21, Moeen 51)published at 22:57 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

This is the cricketing equivalent of silencing the crowd. The crowd is literally silent, not that there was a wave of Hampden Park-style noise from the Scots at the start, but Moeen thumps Davey for four to complete one of his easier half centuries from 39 balls, his fourth in ODIs in his 20th match.

MA:, external Been very impressed with Moeen Ali. Calm, composed and playing some proper cricketing shots.

Jon Evans:, external Bell and Moeen should be a quality opening partnership. Just need to find form. Wonder if there's more in background than meets the eye.

  9. Sixpublished at 22:53 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

The first spell of spin, in the form of off-spinner Majid Haq, running between the umpire and the stumps to bowl around the wicket to left-hander Moeen, who watches two deliveries and is then confident enough to rock back and pull an extremely slow long hop high over mid-wicket for his second six of the innings. That potentially hesitant start for England we spoke of hasn't occurred yet has it? Ten off the over.

  10. Eng 62-0 (run-rate 5.63)published at 22:49 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Davey is getting some movement which is troubling the batsmen on occasions, even at his sedate pace, but the old radar needs a bit of fine tuning. There have been seven wides already and he has sent down five of them.

  11. Scorecard updatepublished at 22:45 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

England 58-0 after 10 overs (Scotland won toss)

    Batsmen: Moeen 35 from 30, Bell 17 from 30

Evans is another tall, slightly built seamer and he is unfortunate to see a Moeen edge fly away for four, but when he drops short the left-hander has plenty of time to pull a more authentic boundary. So we've had six fours and a six in the compulsory 10 powerplay overs. At the same stage of the New Zealand debacle England were 43-2.

  14. How's Stat?published at 22:41 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

England have made a good start to the game but they need to wary as history is against them. Nine of the last 10 ODIs England have played in New Zealand have been won by the team that batted second; the other game was tied.

  15. Eng 49-0published at 22:41 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Pakistan's Wahab Riaz is the fastest bowler in the tournament so far at 154km and I don't think he is going to be surpassed by any of the Scots here. Davey has a go from a different end and he strays on to the pads of Bell, who clips it classily for three.

"Put simply, the Hagley Oval is a lovely ground. In a park setting, the seating area is mostly a grassy bank that circles the playing area. Set back from the arena, out of sight from the cricket, are areas of refreshments and entertainment, with picnic spots and big screens. It puts me in mind of the jovial atmosphere of the queue at Wimbledon."

Martin Niro:, external England look like they should cruise this now - big score & get Scotland out. Expected result but we'll take it at this stage!

Ian: , externalSix an over will do fine. I would take 150-2 after 30 overseas as a platform to 320.

  18. Eng 45-0 (Bell 14, Moeen 25)published at 22:37 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

There have been three previous meetings between these two, England have won two and one was washed out. The most recent meeting last summer was reduced to 20 overs when Alastair Cook's England made 167-6. Bell top-scored with 50. Evans is into his rhythm now, and gets some movement back into Moeen.

    Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"If you are sat in the pavilion, you would fancy a bat against this. It is not like Australia's or New Zealand's bowling. There is nothing to worry about here. The nerves will have been settled in the dressing room. England will make a right mess of it if they don't make 300."

Prior to this match Wardlaw had induced seven outside edges in this tournament, at a percentage of 13.2% of shots played - the highest proportion of any bowler so far. But when he drops short Moeen pulls it dismissively for his third boundary of the innings. The underdogs have started their innings well here haven't they?
