  1. Close of play

    Chris Gayle, West Indies

The next match in the tournament is at 03:30 GMT on Tuesday in Pool B when West Indies take on Zimbabwe, two teams who have one win and one defeat. As for every game in the tournament, there will be a text commentary team in place for that one.

Scotland continue their quest for that all important first victory against Afghanistan in beautiful Dunedin on Thursday, late Wednesday UK time, and don't forget England against Sri Lanka is on Saturday night UK time, starting at 21:45 GMT on 5 live sports extra. The BBC live text will be up and running from 21:30 GMT so please join the team then. From us for now, it's cheerio.

  2. Review of the day

    Moeen Ali and Ian Bell

So no shock today as England record their first victory of the tournament, inspired by a composed 128 from 107 balls by Moeen Ali, who shared 172 for the first wicket with Ian Bell after Scotland chose to field first.

Skipper Eoin Morgan, who had only 22 ODI runs in five previous innings, added 46, with four fours and two sixes, while paceman Steven Finn recovered from his mauling by the New Zealand batsmen to claim 3-26.

  3. Review of the match

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

    Stuart Broad

"I think Stuart Board has lost confidence batting because of Mitchell Johnson swinging round his ear hole last summer. Bowling wise, he needs some bowling because he has been out for a long time with injury."

  4. More quotes from the captains

England captain Eoin Morgan on TMS: "I am proud of the guys and how they fronted up and performed today. To get a result and through a potential banana skin and get points on the board is brilliant.

"Any runs and time in the middle is invaluable, especially considering the lack of runs I have had."

On Steven Finn: "I don't think we can look into Wellington too much. It was the worst time to bowl and the worst batsman to bowl to but he bowled really well today. I have shown faith in the guys I have selected the last two games as I feel they are the strongest we have and the best chance we have of winning games of cricket."

  5. Review of the match

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"England will wake up tomorrow relieved. They have played below par. Now they will feel they are in with a chance. All they have to do is win a couple more matches and get through to the quarter-finals. I think they have a good chance of beating Sri Lanka as I don't think they are the force they used to be. The key is for individual players to help the captain by playing to their potential."

  6. Review of the match

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

    England cricket team

"The only slight concern is that Steven Finn bowled a good line but his pace is down from what it has been and when better batsmen are coming at him, like McCullum, will he be able to do it?"

  7. Review of the match

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"If England had lost three wickets for 50 there would have been some real jitters in the dressing room but that didn't happen and Moeen Ali played beautifully. Ian Bell had to work hard for his half-century. Fortunately at the other end Ali made it easy because he played so fluently.

"On another day when confidence is high they would probably have got another 30 or 40 runs. But 300 is pretty good for an nervous side."

  8. Pool A standings

    Pool A table
  9. More quotes from the captains

Scotland captain Preston Mommsen on TMS: "We are disappointed. We didn't take the game as deep as we would have liked to. Going in at half-time we thought we were in it. We threatened but that is as far as it got. Kyle [Coetzer] batted beautifully for us but unfortunately he couldn't go on to a big one.

"England had the perfect platform so I think we can take a lot of confidence from how we handled the last 25 overs. We had good plans and the guys executed them well at the death.

"There was a good feeling in the camp and preparation was spot on. We were hoping to capitalise on England's poor recent form but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be. England are still a high ranked team and are a full member nation. We had nothing to lose today and gave it our best shot.

"There is a lot of quality on display from the 11 we had out and I know that first victory is not far away."

  10. Text 81111

Josh in Bedford: Solid bowling performance from England but we still refuse to bowl yorkers. These tail enders won't hit them.

  11. Unwanted record

So the plucky Scots remain without a win against a Test nation and have now lost their first 10 World Cup matches, joining the Netherlands as the only teams to have suffered that fate.

  12. Quotes from the captains

Scotland's Preston Mommsen: "We would have liked a few more early wickets. We came back well but then unfortunately with the bat we just couldn't quite get going. We knew we needed a partnership up front, we slowly started to get that but it wasn't enough. It's a huge step up from county cricket to international cricket, the ball is coming quicker and doing more but we are standing up to it and not shying away."

  13. Quotes from the captains

England's Eoin Morgan: "It was important for us to focus on what we do. Losing the toss and batting first when the ball could move about a bit, the two openers set a great platform. Losing batsmen set us back but we recovered really well and got a good score.

"Today was all about a win, it was nice for me to get some runs and I thought we were really good with the ball. We didn't sit and sulk about past performances, guys put in performances."

  14. Player reaction

    Moeen Ali celebrates

England batsman Moeen Ali on Test Match Special: "It is the most important thing that we won. It is nice to get a hundred in a winning side. These games can be tough, as we have seen in the tournament so far.

"I had a good chat with our assistant coach Paul Farbrace and we got on the mental side of it to look positively and concentrate on doing a job for the team. It is not easy, it is in the press and it feels like everyone is against us but it is important that we take that away. Teams lose, and we have not played well but what we need to do is stay together as best as we can.

"There was a point when we thought we might get 340 but we have not being playing well lately so we will take 300. Hopefully we will get on a run now and we can qualify and we will see after that."

  15. How's stat?

This is England's largest victory margin by runs in a World Cup match since they beat East Africa by 196 runs at Birmingham in 1975.

  16. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"Job done. England have been professional. Man for man England are the better team on paper and quite frankly Scotland were not in the game. It was a possible banana skin if England lost early wickets after they'd been beaten heavily by Australia and New Zealand, but it never happened.

"Moeen Ali played splendidly and the other big plus is Eoin Morgan scoring runs. It was all plusses. Scotland, to me, didn't look in the same ability as England, who will sleep better tonight and wake up feeling better and refreshed for their next game against Sri Lanka. I think they will take Sri Lanka."

  17. How's stat?

This is just the fifth time in their last 18 ODIs against Associates sides that England have bowled the opposition out.

  18. Man of the match

Moeen Ali: "It's nice to get a bit of form going into the next game. It's nice to get a winning hundred. Hopefully now we can get on a run and win the next three.

"I didn't feel like I bowled that well. It was nice just to get some wickets and bowl 10 overs."

  19. Join the debate at #bbccricket

James Taylor (not THAT one): Good professional game by England! Much needed win! Batting was still poor other than Ali.

  20. Final scorecard

    Scotland 184 from 42.2 overs

    Fall of wickets: 17-1 (MacLeod 4), 47-2 (Coleman 7), 54-3 (Machan 5), 114-4 (Mommsen 26), 122-5 (Coetzer 71), 128-6 (Berrington 8), 150-7 (Davey 9), 160-8 (Cross 23), 184-9 (Evans 9), 184-10 (Haq 15)

  21. Post update

Next up for England is Sri Lanka on Sunday, late Saturday night UK time. They made rather heavy weather of it against Zimbabwe yesterday didn't they, only winning by four wickets?

  22. WICKET

Haq c Ballance b Woakes 15 - Scotland 184 all out (England win by 119 runs)

    England team celebrate

No time for Jimmy to get another as Woakes captures his second, Haq going for glory and finding fine-leg. In delightful afternoon sunshine England leave the field looking very contented, a far cry from the other day when they sloped off having lost in 12.3 overs against New Zealand.

  23. WICKET

    Evans c Buttler b Anderson Sco (184-9)

Jimmy could do with a late brace here, he's only got 1-133 from his three matches in the tournament thus far. And sure enough, he strikes. Fabulous delivery too, 'too good for thee lad' as the late, great Fred Trueman was said to be fond of saying. Away movement, pitches on middle, finds the edge, and Buttler takes a neat catch diving forward behindthe timbers.

  24. Sco 183-8 (required rate 13.44)

Evans picks up two more boundaries in typical tailender fashion off Woakes, fending a short one down the leg-side and scything wildly over the wicketkeeper's head where you very rarely find a fielder.

  25. Scorecard update

    Scotland 175-8 after 40 overs (target 304)

    Batsmen: Haq 14, Evans 9

    Fall of wickets: 17-1 (MacLeod 4), 47-2 (Coleman 7), 54-3 (Machan 5), 114-4 (Mommsen 26), 122-5 (Coetzer 71), 128-6 (Berrington 8), 150-7 (Davey 9), 160-8 (Cross 23)

    Bowling figures: Anderson 5-0-29-1, Broad 7-0-22-0, Woakes 4-0-17-1, Finn 9-3-26-3, Moeen 10-0-47-2, Root 5-0-27-1

    England 303-8: Moeen 128, Bell 54, Morgan 46

  26. Sco 175-8 (Majid 14, Evans 1)

Super shot from Majid. Stand and deliver, a free swing of the bat and down the ground she goes for four-penneth. He's played 52 matches, averaging 17 and has a best of 71. Combined with an inside edge and a lofted cut, the left-hander collects three boundaries in the over, the first Finn has conceded.

  27. Umpire review

    Sco 163-8 (required rate 12.81)

    Steven Finn

Finn is up to second in the list of World Cup wicket-takers now with eight, three behind New Zealand's sultan of swing Tim Southee, who will surely add quite a few more. Broad has only two and after being incredulous his lbw appeal is not granted, he uses the England review, as he often likes to. It is clipping leg stump for height and width so it's umpire's call and Haq remains.

  28. WICKET

    Cross c Root b Finn 23 (Sco 160-8)

    Steven Finn celebrates

But big Finny is back in the wickets in style. Those visions of a charging McCullum must have faded and he has 3-14 now in his eighth over. Cross is the personification of his name when he tries to leave a rising delivery and it simply flies off the face of the bat to Root at slip.

  29. Sco 160-7 (required rate 11.07)

Now I don't like to criticise but let's talk about SCJ Broad. He has only taken four or more wickets 10 times in his 116 ODIs and the last of those was in March 2011. He's played 40 matches since then. It is not going to be significant in this match but it might be if England are going to challenge the big boys. Also his pace, it is barely 80mph. Cross has plenty of time to pick up two off the back foot and then keeps the bowling with an easy paddle to mid-wicket.

  30. Post update

    Jeremy Coney

Ex-New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

"After the savage beating Finn took from McCullum against New Zealand he has come back and looked lively, bowled a decent line and got good bounce. He has had all the batsmen struggling to get runs from him."

  31. Sco 156-7 (Cross 20, Majid 1)

The powerplay begins, and much like an England batting powerplay there is hardly a flurry of runs. None in fact. There were only two maidens in the England innings and this is only the second of this one, both to Finn.

  32. Sco 156-7 (required rate 9.86)

The Scots have reached 300 on two occasions - and one was on this very ground when MacLeod made that record 175 I told you about some hours ago. They scored 341-9 from their 50 then against Canada but they are likely to get around half of that here. Moeen concedes a fourth boundary as Cross swats away to leg, but he returns 2-47 from his 10 and has 19 ODI wickets from his 20 matches.

  33. How's stat?

    Moeen 128 and 9-0-41-2

The last player to score a century and take two wickets in the same ODI for England was Jonathan Trott (102 & 2-31) v Australia at Adelaide on 26 January, 2011.

The only player to score a 100 and take three wickets in the same ODI for England is Paul Collingwood (112* & 6-31) v Bangladesh at Trent Bridge in 2005.

  34. Post update

    Stephan Shemilt

    BBC Sport in Christchurch

"It never fails to amaze me how much a streaker captures the imagination of ex-cricketers. This particular streak, however, was something special. Our invader avoided the portly security with speed and nimble feet, making it all across the outfield, past our commentary box and over the fence at the back - the perfect crime. 'Wonderful athleticism,' says Geoffrey Boycott."

  35. WICKET

    Davey c Buttler b Finn 9 (Sco 150-7)

    Steven Finn celebrates

I don't think my suggestion for the streaker graphic was passed by the BBC governors but we have one on the field - a streaker, not a BBC governor. He made a brave, scattergun run, rather like a pheasant surrounded by an invasion of game hunters, but there is no time to vault over the bails before he is apprehended.

Another wicket, Finn has Davey caught behind with a routine edge, and the big paceman has 2-14. He's enjoying this rather more than his two overs for 49 against the blazing blade of Brendon McCullum's New Zealand.

  36. Post update

    Jeremy Coney

Ex-New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

"Ali has been impressive, bowling into a breeze, he has looked lively and has got good revs on the ball. The ball does things in the air for him and he is getting it to drift in the air and then grip.

The other thing he did was to bowl with enough speed to prevent the batsmen making room to hit on the on side. The batsmen lost their options and could only score on one side."

  37. Sco 148-6 (Moeen 2-41 from 9)

A leg slip in place for Moeen in the pleasant late afternoon sunshine. These views across the emerald turf are just a delight. He's not giving it much flight, Moeen, but England are rattling through the overs and watching the required rate escalate. It has gone above nine now.

  38. Sco 144-6 (Cross 11, Davey 7)

The first wide of the innings as Root strays down the leg-side. The Scots bowled 15 of them and conceded 21 extra in total. An old school short-arm thump from Cross, a little like a hockey stroke, superbly stopped on the rope by Anderson prevents the four and saves one run, but was it really worth risking injury for England's premier bowler? One run is hardly going to matter is it? Is it?

  39. Sco 136-6 (required rate 8.64)

Steady the buffs fellas I have to get some detail into these descriptions as well you know. Four routine singles is the gist of this Moeen over. So his best ODI figures remain 2-34 against India last year.

  40. Scorecard update

    Scotland 132-6 after 30 overs (target 304)

    Batsmen: Cross 3, Davey 1

    Fall of wickets: 17-1 (MacLeod 4), 47-2 (Coleman 7), 54-3 (Machan 5), 114-4 (Mommsen 26), 122-5 (Coetzer 71), 128-6 (Berrington 8)

    Bowling figures: Anderson 5-0-29-1, Broad 5-0-18-0, Woakes 3-0-9-1, Finn 5-1-12-1, Moeen 7-0-33-2, Root 3-0-16-1

    England 303-8: Moeen 128, Bell 54, Morgan 46

Record: Moeen and Bell's stand of 172 is England's highest World Cup opening partnership of all time and the highest by any team at this World Cup

    Scorecard

Listen to Test Match Special commentary

  41. Sco 132-6 (target 304)

England content with their spin twins and Root, who has a best of 2-15 against the West Indies, has only conceded the one boundary in his opening four overs, just the three singles in this one. So 172 from the final 20 overs and only four wickets remaining.

  42. WICKET

    Berrington c Morgan b Moeen 8 (Sco 128-6)

Moeen Ali celebrates having bowled out Scotland's Richie Berrington

But the skipper is in the right place to pouch this one at mid-wicket. Moeen has his best ODI figures currently, 2-33. What a spell I've had since replacing Phil, I've taken 3-14 in 21 balls.

  43. Sco 127-5 (required rate 8.04)

Some spin there for young Joseph Edward Root. It deceives new man Matthew Cross who spoons it upwardly but short of the in-field. For all talk of Morgan's innovations, the fields are fairly routine.

  44. WICKET

    Coetzer c Woakes b Moeen 71 (Sco 122-5)

    Moeen Ali celebrates

Not much doubt who the man of the match is going to be. The last remaining hope of preventing Moeen picking up the award is on his way. Aberdeen-born Coetzer is no stereotypical large hirsute redheaded Scotsman brandishing an agricultural claymore, he is a composed character with a beautifully straight bat. But he knew the required rate was nudging eight and he tried to loft over long-on, did not time it at all and found mid-on.

  45. Sco 118-4 (Root 1-12 from 2)

Richie Berrington is the new man, he's made an ODI century too, an unbeaten 101 against Ireland last September. Four off the over.

  46. WICKET

    Mommsen c Broad b Root 26 (Sco 114-4)

Preston Mommsen leaves the field dejected

Thanks Phil, well if this was New Zealand chasing this total we'd all be home by now. The Scots HAD been going well, adding 40 in the last five overs, but Mommsen departs, hoisting Root to the mid-wicket boundary where Broad takes a comfortable catch.

  47. Sco 114-3 (run-rate 4.56, required 7.60)

Moeen continues and Scotland are contained after their recent little flurry. Halfway through the overs and there is still life in Scotland. They need 190 more runs to cause a major upset. I've been commanded to take my sweater and so I leave you in the very capable hands of Mr Jamie Lillywhite, who will see you through to the close.

  48. Post update

    Vic Marks

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

    Hagley Oval

"We all know what can happen if a partnership can start to blossom. This England side has not got much variety and Root is the only 'sixth' option I can see out there. I'm sure the Scots will see Joe Root as time to take the attack to the opposition."

  49. Sco 111-3 (Mommsen 24, Coetzer 67)

After Woakes' poor over, Eoin Morgan turns to the off-spin of Joe Root. It doesn't stem the tide of boundaries, though, as Mommsen sweeps him for four. Four singles on top of that take Scotland to Nelson.

  50. Sco 103-3 (Coetzer 65, Mommsen 18)

England almost hit back immediately as Mommsen punches a lofty shot just past the outstretched hands of Moeen off the spinner's bowling. Mommsen makes the most of the let-off with a drive down the ground for another four. Scotland are on the charge. This pair have put on 49 and are in a positive mood.

  51. Sco 97-3 (Mommsen 13, Coetzer 64)

    Kyle Coetzer batting

Coetzer has found his groove again. He smashes three more fours - the first down the ground, the second a flick to fine leg and the third a pull through square leg - off Woakes. Has Scotland's danger man decided it is now or never? It would appear so.

  52. Sco 85-3 (run-rate 4.04, required 7.55)

Scotland are back in the boundary game as Coetzer fires one through midwicket to the boundary. Anderson dives and looks to have stopped it but the third umpire decrees he was touching the boundary rope when he pushed the ball back. Mommsen follows this up by hammering a drive down the ground for another four. Scotland needed that.

  53. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"There are three teams who are better than England on paper - Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, but better people than me say on paper doesn't win a competition. If England start performing well they'll be a force to be reckoned with."

  54. Scorecard update

    Scotland 74-3 after 20 overs (target 304)

  55. Sco 74-3 (Finn 1-12 from 5)

England are not blowing Scotland out of this game, they are slowly strangling the life out of their challenge. Finn bowls the innings' first maiden, as Mommsen is pinned at the striker's end.

  56. Sco 74-3 (Mommsen 8, Coetzer 50)

Coetzer reaches his 50 from 64 balls with a flick to leg from Moeen. At one stage it looked as though he would reach it much quicker. Scotland take just three from the over and the required run-rate creeps up again.

  57. Sco 71-3 (Mommsen 6, Coetzer 49)

If Scotland are to win this game they need to make something happen soon. Coetzer has looked the most likely man to do that so far but after a flurry of early boundaries he is now struggling to get the ball away. Credit to England's bowlers for this. Finn goes for four from his fourth over to leave him with figures of 1-12.

  58. How's stat?

    Chris Woakes

Chris Woakes has taken a wicket in his first over in each of the last two games. In his previous 28 ODIs he had struck only once in his first over conceding 142 runs in total in those overs.

  59. Sco 66-3 (run-rate 3.88, required 7.21)

Moeen Ali brings some spin into the attack to add a different dynamic to England's attack. Scotland are dealing almost exclusively in singles at the moment, much to England's liking. Three more are added to the total and Scotland reach 66-3 before drinks are brought on.

"They'll get these 304 if they bat until 10 o'clock tonight...probably halfway through their second innings as well. England are just a little bit better, they're not giving them the easy short ball or the wide one to drive. And that's what you should expect."

  62. Sco 63-3 (Coetzer 45, Mommsen 1)

Better pace and better line is giving England the advantage. Finn keeps it tight and restricts the Scots pair to a couple of singles. Yes, the batsmen are not of the quality of Australia and New Zealand but it is an improvement nonetheless.

  63. Post update

    Jeremy Coney

Ex-New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

"It's been a relatively successful transition from the 10 over mark from Anderson and Broad to Woakes and Finn. The run-rate hasn't escalated in any way. If Scotland are going to threaten in any way they are going to have to score off the back foot without a horizontal bat."

  64. Sco 61-3 (Coetzer 44, Mommsen 1)

Woakes offers an appeal for an lbw against Coetzer, but the ball was only just clipping leg stump (leading to an umpire's call on DRS) and the appeal is turned down. The pressure is increasing on Scotland as the over goes for just a single.

    Steve Finn bowls

Finn continues and continues well, going for just a couple of singles. Coetzer's early boundary blitz has been stemmed and Scotland are finding it much harder to score now.

  67. Sco 58-3 (Mommsen 0, Coetzer 42)

England look much livelier in the field now. Woakes' second over is a good one and would have been a great one had a top-edged pull from Coetzer carried to Finn at fine leg and not skipped just past the fielder's outstretched hand and gone for four.

Steven Finn went for 49 runs from two overs against New Zealand. He currently has 1-3 from six balls. I'd call that a significant improvement. The new man for Scotland is captain Preston Mommsen.

Ex-New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

"The dangerman in a sense has gone. It was just a little nibble outside the off-stump, it may have got a wee bit of bounce. England have now made a large step forward in preventing Scotland getting anywhere near this total."

  72. WICKET

    Machan c Buttler b Finn 5 (Sco 54-3)

    Steven Finn celebrates

Steven Finn is into the attack in place of Broad and he makes a much better start than he did against New Zealand. A shortish delivery to Machan catches the outside edge and is easily taken by Buttler. England are starting to take control of matters.

  80. Sco 47-1 (Coleman 7, Coetzer 36)

    Stuart Broad bowls

Broad is proving the more economical of the England bowlers as he concedes three runs. His second ball draws a pull from Coetzer and a half-hearted appeal from Buttler, which the umpire stares down without response. That is the end of the first powerplay. England were 58-0 at this stage in their innings.

  81. Sco 44-1 (Coleman 5, Coetzer 35)

Steady away from Scotland who add three to the total from Anderson's fifth over. The Lancashire bowler has taken the innings' only wicket but gone for 29 from his 30 deliveries.

  82. Sco 41-1 (run-rate 5.12)

It is pretty much boundaries or dot-balls for Coetzer, who flicks Broad's first ball down through third-man for his seventh four. He has 35 from 32 balls. You can't fault him or his team - they have nothing to lose here. They might as well swing hard on anything in the slot.

  83. Sco 37-1 (Coetzer 31, Coleman 2)

Coetzer is on fire at the moment. He moves to 26 with a lovely back-foot drive through cover and then follows that up with another boundary, through the same area, this time off the front foot. The longer this goes on, the more memories of a certain Kevin O'Brien might start to creep in.

George Hayward: Now time for England to show us what they can pull out of the bag! No silly drops in the field!

  87. Sco 22-1 (Coleman 0, Coetzer 18)

There isn't a lot of footwork going on from Coetzer. He is standing and waiting for Anderson to deliver. It keeps him in the game for five balls before the sixth is flicked to deep midwicket for four.

  88. Sco 18-1 (Coetzer 14, Coleman 0)

That wicket has checked Scotland, who are tied up by some tidy stuff from Stuart Broad, who goes for just one run. The Notts man hits the treble 20 with regularity and Coleman has no answer other than a flat bat.

  96. Sco 9-0 (Coetzer 5, Macleod)

Kyle Coetzer and Calum MacLeod are the openers for Scotland. The former (who scored 96 in that warm-up game against West Indies) flicks Jimmy Anderson's third ball (over-pitched on leg-stump through midwicket for four. He then nicks the next ball to second slip, where he is dropped by the diving Ian Bell. MacLeod compounds England's woes by hammering the final ball through cover to the boundary. Still, you suspect it's too many for Scotland."

Scotland will be happy with the way they were able to hole England back after Morgan's men had set up what looked like a huge score in the first half of their innings. England would have liked to have been launching it now, with more wickets in the tent, but beggars can't be choosers. 142. Eng 208-4 (Taylor 3, Morgan 1)

There is a nervy moment for Morgan as an early Evans ball strikes him on the pads, leading to big lbw cries. But the skipper survives. Morgan's nerves are clear to see, although at least he avoids a potential fourth duck in six innings with a flick to fine leg for a single. The powerplay is being wasted. There are still question marks about him, particularly against high-class opening bowlers, but this innings was just what the doctor ordered. Two fresh batsmen and the powerplay coming up, still work to be done but they should get at least 300."

But manipulation after 30 overs is not good enough. I'm not sure about Ballance at number three at this stage. This is an opportunity for England to practise, they can do a lot more, they've got to extend themselves."

Football Scout: Why aren't England flexible enough to change their batting order? This situation is made for Buttler?

Pat O'Hara: Hales would have hit 120 from 83 balls. We'd have only had 25 overs though because we'd be looking for the ball in the car park.

  157. Eng 200-1 (Evans 0-34 from 7)

Alasdair Evans comes round the wicket, putting it down at around 130km/h, which poses little difficulty. Moeen bides him time and then whips the last ball away to the backward point boundary for four. And on come the drinks. Scotland need the regroup far more than England, who have brought up their 200.

Vic Marks tells me that in Dunedin, my next destination, the flamethrowers are even closer. I never liked my eyebrows, anyway."

  159. Eng 195-1 (Ballance 7, Moeen 124)

Berrington's fourth over goes for a procession of singles before Moeen hammers a drive down the ground for four, which takes him to 120 and past his previous highest ODI score (in Sri Lanka last November). He then smashes another four through extra cover. Moeen will be eyeing a big, big score now. Double figures from that over. It is a rarity this innings.

Jacob Webster: As far as I'm concerned, that's 85 balls wasted by Bell. What was the point of that? And now the same from Ballance no doubt.

Chris Jones: Strange 50 by Bell. Looks out of touch, as soon as he moved up the gears he was a walking wicket

  162. Eng 184-1 (run-rate 5.75)

Moeen picks his length, rocks back and smashes a pull over the boundary for his fifth six off Coetzer. England are pushing towards 200. You would suspect that the 35th over might be your magic number to slam the foot on the accelerator? Modern thinking often states that doubling your score in the last 15 is the aim.

  168. Eng 168-0 (Moeen 106, Bell 52)

  170. 100 - Moeen Ali

    Moeen Ali celebrates

Moeen Ali takes a big swipe at Majid Haq and dispatches him into the car park for his fourth six, which brings up his 100 from 91 balls. It is his second ODI ton, following on from the 119 he scored against Sri Lanka last November. Like his partner, there has barely been a bead on his forehead.

"Bell was helped by Moeen scoring quicker at the other end. There's no threat in the bowling, it gets the form going and that's important because there are bigger games to come."

  172. 50 for Bell - Eng 157-0

Simon Mann has described the Scotland attack as "friendly" on TMS. I think that's kind. Kyle Coetzer is the latest man to try his arm but it is the same trundling medium pace, which enables Bell to move to his 50, off 80 balls. It is his 33rd ODI half-century. He has barely broken sweat.

  173. Eng 151-0 (Moeen 93, Bell 48)

We stay with the tamest of the tame off-spin from Majid Haq, who Bell tries to work away but fails to do so for half the over before plundering a single with a sweep to deep square leg.

  174. Eng 150-0 (run-rate 5.77)

Thanks Jamie. Well, legitimate fears of an England catastrophe so far appear to be wide of the mark, much like Scotland's bowling in the first 25 overs. It is all too easy for Moeen and Bell, who haven't really played a truly aggressive shot yet. That doesn't change as Wardlaw battles though his sixth over, which goes for a steady six (including the eighth wide of the innings) and brings up the 150.

  175. Eng 144-0 (Moeen 92, Bell 43)

    Andrew Strauss celebrates

From the despair of losing in 12.3 overs against New Zealand I find myself turning to the highest England ODI scores page. The answer is 391-4 against Bangladesh at Trent Bridge in 2005, when Andrew Strauss and Scotland coach Paul Collingwood made centuries.

Moeen is looking assured as he moves towards his second ODI hundred, chipping Majid nonchalantly for two. In fairness to the Scots they need a change, so I hand you to my colleague Phil Dawkes for the remainder of the innings.

  176. Eng 138-0 (run-rate 5.75)

Wardlaw is back, he has been the best of a mediocre bunch so far with 0-15 from his opening four overs. Short again though, and a delightful swivel pull with one foot off the ground from Moeen. Four more. Humpty Dumpty bowling Geoffrey calls it. Humpty might have been a useful all-rounder, big-hitting, bowling gentle but devilishly swinging deliveries.

  177. Eng 132-0 (Evans 0-29 from 6)

There is a direct hit as Bell dives to make his ground for a quick single, the most exertion from the batsmen thus far, but there is no appeal. Moeen hammers Evans for his eighth four.

  178. Eng 126-0 (Bell 40, Moeen 77)

Machan is in his 18th match but it's fair to say he is rather more of a batsman than a bowler. He has taken eight wickets, and claimed 3-31 against Kenya at Aberdeen in 2013. Wonder what the pitch was like? He tries a quicker one, they're all a bit flat in all truth, but Moeen picks up two more with ease.

Evans is an honest campaigner, with his sprightly run-up in the mould of a high jumper, albeit not at the same curved angle. There is the politest of appeals when Moeen makes no contact with an attempted hook but umpire S Ravi from India rules out any brushing off the glove.

Sussex batsman Matt Machan, who made 56 against the Kiwis, is the sixth Scotland bowler employed. The stockily built 24-year-old is sporting some dark glasses but there is little in the way of sunshine at the Hagley Oval, and very little in the way of difficulty for the batsmen with those innocuous off-spinners, fired in flat from around the wicket.

  183. Eng 112-0 (Bell 32, Moeen 71)

There's not a great deal of Barmy Army rowdiness, think more a county cricket hum. There's lots of Scottish Saltires too."

Mike, SW London: Not all plain sailing, as England have played a few false shots. Getting through their shots a touch early at times; ball seems to be sticking in the pitch. It's only Scotland's shocking bowling that has enabled a reasonable start. Cannot waste that new ball!

Gary in Wirral: This is nothing more than a chance for the English players to find some form against a pretty poor Scottish attack. It's just a shame they are only bowling 50 overs, I don't think they'd got 10 wickets if they bowled 500 overs

  186. Eng 110-0 (Majid 0-22 from 4)

Surely that England run-rate is going to improve significantly? Majid is struggling a bit here, like the majority of the attack it has to be said. He knocks the stumps over in his delivery stride when he bowls over the wicket to Bell, but does find the edge of Moeen, through the vacant slip area.

You feel Moeen may have a Gower-esque lapse of concentration because it is a bit too easy for him. He's unquestionably classy, but Gower will always be the greatest in my view.

  190. Century stand - Eng 102-0 (Bell 29, Moeen 65)

Berrington didn't bowl against New Zealand and he might not be on for much longer here. Both England openers seize on loose deliveries to collect boundaries, Moeen scoring at more than twice the rate of his partner, who has faced only four balls fewer. The most comfortable drinks break for England of recent vintage.

"Moeen is actually playing in a very restrained manner, with the odd punctuation of a straight six. But we can see how sides can accelerate in the late overs if they have wickets in hand. What a relief it will be for England's middle order if they can come in off the back of a very solid base."

  192. Eng 91-0 (Moeen strike-rate 120)

Majid is getting even slower, down at 69k's. He could almost bowl in a built-up area. It's not as if he has got the batsmen in two minds yet. Moeen is playing with such assurance that only an indiscretion on his part could bring about his dismissal. The bagpipes ring out, almost plaintively though it seems.

  193. Six - Eng 89-0 (Bell 23, Moeen 58)

Richie Berrington is the fifth bowler used by Scotland, and the third to be hit for six by Moeen. What an exquisite stroke it was too, the most sublime straight bat, merely pushing through the line. Effortless.

Ben Wear: No excuses! England should be getting 380 minimum against this attack!

Rossi Biddle: After 12.2 overs Eng are 75-0 when NZ were 125-2. given our negative NRR we might need to start to increase this speed.

  195. Eng 82-0 (run-rate 5.85)

Majid gets through his overs quickly as all spinners should, but the actual speed of the delivery is extremely measured, around 74k's, roughly 45mph. The batsmen have time to play several shots to each ball but are happy to collect a single apiece.

  197. Fifty for Moeen - Eng 80-0 (Bell 21, Moeen 51)

    Moeen Ali celebrates

This is the cricketing equivalent of silencing the crowd. The crowd is literally silent, not that there was a wave of Hampden Park-style noise from the Scots at the start, but Moeen thumps Davey for four to complete one of his easier half centuries from 39 balls, his fourth in ODIs in his 20th match.

MA: Been very impressed with Moeen Ali. Calm, composed and playing some proper cricketing shots.

  199. Six

    Eng 72-0 (Bell 17, Moeen 46)

The first spell of spin, in the form of off-spinner Majid Haq, running between the umpire and the stumps to bowl around the wicket to left-hander Moeen, who watches two deliveries and is then confident enough to rock back and pull an extremely slow long hop high over mid-wicket for his second six of the innings. That potentially hesitant start for England we spoke of hasn't occurred yet has it? Ten off the over.

  200. Eng 62-0 (run-rate 5.63)

Davey is getting some movement which is troubling the batsmen on occasions, even at his sedate pace, but the old radar needs a bit of fine tuning. There have been seven wides already and he has sent down five of them.

  203. Eng 58-0 (Bell 16, Moeen 35)

    Moeen Ali hits a shot

Evans is another tall, slightly built seamer and he is unfortunate to see a Moeen edge fly away for four, but when he drops short the left-hander has plenty of time to pull a more authentic boundary. So we've had six fours and a six in the compulsory 10 powerplay overs. At the same stage of the New Zealand debacle England were 43-2.

  204. How's Stat?

England have made a good start to the game but they need to wary as history is against them. Nine of the last 10 ODIs England have played in New Zealand have been won by the team that batted second; the other game was tied.

  205. Eng 49-0

Pakistan's Wahab Riaz is the fastest bowler in the tournament so far at 154km and I don't think he is going to be surpassed by any of the Scots here. Davey has a go from a different end and he strays on to the pads of Bell, who clips it classily for three.

There have been three previous meetings between these two, England have won two and one was washed out. Iain Wardlaw

Prior to this match Wardlaw had induced seven outside edges in this tournament, at a percentage of 13.2% of shots played - the highest proportion of any bowler so far. But when he drops short Moeen pulls it dismissively for his third boundary of the innings. The underdogs have started their innings well here haven't they?

  211. Eng 32-0 (Bell 8, Moeen 18)

Alasdair Evans replaces Davey, whose opening two overs went for 20, and after an opening long hop is dispatched to the cover boundary by Bell, one keeps a shade low and pins him on the crease. Not out is the decision and the Scots decide not to review, just as well as the replay shows umpire's call, the ball only clipping leg stump.

  212. Eng 25-0 (run-rate 5.00)

Wardlaw is up around 130km/h, only about 80mph, but he is accurate and is getting some bounce. England are happy to respect him with the amount of loose bowling at the other end. Just the single to each batsman.

Moeen's fiercely struck cover drive just falls short of the cover fielder and he takes full advantage with some fluent strokes on the off-side as Josh Davey offers him width, and then the most classical lofted drive down the ground sails over the ropes for the first six of the match.

  216. Eng 9-0 (Bell 2, Moeen 3)

Wardlaw, who has 33 wickets from his 19 ODIs, is right on the money, however, and Bell takes no chances, content to play out the first maiden.

Football, rugby union and darts have had their fair share of ding-dong clashes between England and Scotland over the ages, but cricket has yet to write its own chapter in the Battle of Britain sporting almanac.

    Is that about to change?

  236. Captain's quotes

England captain Eoin Morgan: "It has not the ideal start to the campaign but this is a chance for us to get started.

"I would have bowled first but the wicket looks good, so we don't mind batting first. The balance of our side and the chance for players to put a performance under the belt is the most important thing. It is a strong side we have put out and a chance for us to turn things around."

  237. Scotland changes

Two changes for the Scots, batsman Freddie Coleman and Alasdair Evans replace Hamish Gardiner and Rob Taylor. Saving them for the big one? Freddie's average needs a bit of work though. It's only 12 so far. All-rounder Evans has only played eight ODIS and has five wickets with a best of 2-34.

  238. Captain's quotes

Scotland captain Preston Mommsen: "This is where we qualified for the World Cup so we are happy to be here. He [Paul Collingwood] has been hugely influential and knows the England players so he has been very valuable.

"The wicket should play well but we may get some swing early on. It is always nice to be playing the neighbours. They have not had the best start so hopefully we can put them under pressure early on."

Scotland win the toss and will bowl first in overcast conditions at the Hagley Oval.

  241. Post update

Remarkable scenes we're hearing, the England and Wales Cricket Board have tweeted England are unchanged.

  242. Post update

The Scots pushed New Zealand considerably closer than England did in their one match so far, recovering from 12-4 to lose by only three wickets in the end. They are unbeaten in their two previous ODIs here. Their opener Calum MacLeod has made the highest score on the ground, a superb 175 against Canada last year. They're almost favourites aren't they?

  243. Post update

This match is being played on the same Hagley Oval pitch where West Indies made 310 against Pakistan the other day, Andre Russell making 42 from 13 balls with four sixes. Anyone going to play a similar innings tonight do you think?

  245. Post update

England have the worst net run-rate of any team in the competition and their paltry total in the last game was overhauled in 12.3 overs by New Zealand. In the last few years they have lost twice in the World Twenty20 to the Netherlands and in the last World Cup were beaten by Ireland. Could they lose to Scotland tonight?
