"Moeen Ali has launched the innings, he's gone for the big one an over before the powerplay. He played fluently from the word go. There are still question marks about him, particularly against high-class opening bowlers, but this innings was just what the doctor ordered. Two fresh batsmen and the powerplay coming up, still work to be done but they should get at least 300."

Moeen will not be pushing on to a double-century as he plants his foot and swipes the ball straight down the throat of Coleman on the deep leg-side boundary off the bowling of the returning Haq. We are on the verge of the powerplay as well. Oh well, over to you Joe Root.

"There has not been a threat from the Scottish bowlers. They are really just slightly quick dobbers. Bell found it difficult because he is a touch player. But manipulation after 30 overs is not good enough. I'm not sure about Ballance at number three at this stage. This is an opportunity for England to practise, they can do a lot more, they've got to extend themselves."

Aashish:, external Ballance should not be out there, he should watching this at home like the rest of us.

Football Scout:, external Why aren't England flexible enough to change their batting order? This situation is made for Buttler?

Pat O'Hara:, external Hales would have hit 120 from 83 balls. We'd have only had 25 overs though because we'd be looking for the ball in the car park.

Alasdair Evans comes round the wicket, putting it down at around 130km/h, which poses little difficulty. Moeen bides him time and then whips the last ball away to the backward point boundary for four. And on come the drinks. Scotland need the regroup far more than England, who have brought up their 200.

    The view from TMS box

"The flamethrowers that have been a feature of the tournament are attached to a sightscreen below the TMS box. When they go off, the heat can be felt even though the windows are closed. Vic Marks tells me that in Dunedin, my next destination, the flamethrowers are even closer. I never liked my eyebrows, anyway."

  7. Eng 195-1 (Ballance 7, Moeen 124)published at 00:18 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2015

Berrington's fourth over goes for a procession of singles before Moeen hammers a drive down the ground for four, which takes him to 120 and past his previous highest ODI score (in Sri Lanka last November). He then smashes another four through extra cover. Moeen will be eyeing a big, big score now. Double figures from that over. It is a rarity this innings.

"The value of a game like this is the element of pushing yourself as a batsman towards the edge. That's what Ali has got out of this innings, I can't really remember anything other than a couple of shots from Bell. Get into a habit to push yourself to get better."

Nick Turner:, external Why stick Ballance in now. Moores has lost the plot get Morgan or Buttler in crying out loud man!

Jacob Webster:, external As far as I'm concerned, that's 85 balls wasted by Bell. What was the point of that? And now the same from Ballance no doubt.

Chris Jones:, external Strange 50 by Bell. Looks out of touch, as soon as he moved up the gears he was a walking wicket

Moeen picks his length, rocks back and smashes a pull over the boundary for his fifth six off Coetzer. England are pushing towards 200. You would suspect that the 35th over might be your magic number to slam the foot on the accelerator? Modern thinking often states that doubling your score in the last 15 is the aim.

Ballance is off the mark with an easy two through cover. It is a very pleasant welcome for the new man. Here you go son, have a couple. He adds another with the final ball of Berrington's six to keep strike.

"It's not coming off the pitch at the normal pace. Moeen Ali is comfortable going aerial but Ian Bell likes to hit it on the ground mainly and that just spooned to the fielder."

The partnership is broken and Bell is gone as he looks to hammer a ball from the returning Richie Berrington through the covers and is caught by Coetzer. It has not been the classiest and attacking of innings Bell has played but it has done a job. Gary Ballance is the new man and he will surely look to push England on with some more aggressive play.

  16. Eng 172-0 (Coetzer 0-10 from 2)published at 00:04 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2015

I was wrong. Another steady over - off the bowling of Coetzer - sees a few singles take England past 170. It is no risk cricket and is setting England up for a charge past 300.

  17. Eng 168-0 (Moeen 106, Bell 52)published at 23:59 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Small signs of an England acceleration as Bell looks to drive one down the ground after Moeen's big six. It takes England to 168-0. Could things be about to get more exciting?

"Nice innings from Moeen, fluent, his timing has been good, he's played his off drives nicely, and anything short he has pulled it well. The fact the bowling hasn't been threatening is not his fault."

Moeen Ali takes a big swipe at Majid Haq and dispatches him into the car park for his fourth six, which brings up his 100 from 91 balls. It is his second ODI ton, following on from the 119 he scored against Sri Lanka last November. Like his partner, there has barely been a bead on his forehead.

"Bell was helped by Moeen scoring quicker at the other end. There's no threat in the bowling, it gets the form going and that's important because there are bigger games to come."
