Dazza B:, external Chris Gayle admirably aims for a double century of his own while England feel comfortable aiming for that as a team.

Shak:, external Just imagine what the score could have been if Samuels showed a little aggression earlier than he did!

  2. Philander ruled outpublished at 07:44 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

A snippet of news from South Africa - seamer Vernon Philander will miss Friday's game against West Indies because of a hamstring injury, and is doubtful for the next game against Ireland on Tuesday 3 March.

"We don't want to be foolish by taking short-cuts... If he passes all the fitness tests and is symptom-free going into the Ireland game he may play but at this stage it is too early to tell," said team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee, who is also a medical doctor.

Ashish Pujari:, external Dave Cameron just pulled back Gayle's bonus package... he is not happy how Gayle got out on the last ball.

In case you weren't with us at 03:00, West Indies board president Dave Cameron (not that one) became involved in a row after retweeting a fan's criticism of Gayle for... low scores.

Gordon Tait:, external Remarkable performance by Chris Gayle, but World Cup has been a terrible tournament so far with not one close game.

If you're just waking up, you've missed a Gayle-force storm in Canberra with records falling aplenty.

All the more remarkably, in the middle of the innings, it featured 10 overs for 45 from a part-time spinner (including a maiden over) who then watched the front-line bowlers smacked around, while one of them was taken off for bowling successive beamers.

England women's captain Charlotte Edwards on TMS: "There was a lot of hype, but in our dressing room it was all about the series win. There were a few tears walking out but it was great to have people here to mark the occasion. I'm really proud of the way of the way we played and to win in a convincing manner was really pleasing."

More from Chris Gayle: "It was slow at the start, but you have to take the bull by its horns and try to put some pressure on them. Eventually the field spread and I targeted which balls to attack.

"When I got past one hundred, I knew I wanted it to be a double hundred, so I'm glad I got the chance to deliver it."

"I've got to push myself to get the preparation right - I've been restricted by injuries and age is catching up with me. Let's finish this off and move ahead."

Record breaker Chris Gayle: "Overall, it was a struggle at the start and I had a scare on the first ball. I needed a break and I made best use of it.

"I thanked God when I got to 100, there's been a lot of pressure, the runs haven't been coming, for the first time in my career so many people wanted me to perform so badly so I'm glad I gave them something to finally cheer about."

So, here's a few of those records you may have missed:

    • Chris Gayle scores the first World Cup double hundred.

    • Gayle's 16 sixes equals the ODI record held by Rohit Sharma and AB de Villiers, and shatters the previous World Cup record of nine.

    • Gayle and Samuels have broken the highest ODI partnership record for any wicket.

    • Gayle also scored more runs in this innings than in his last 12 combined (199).

An astonishing knock ends as Gayle skies the ball over mid-wicket and is caught off the final ball of the innings for the highest score in World Cup history - 215 from 147 balls.

Poor old Hamilton Masakadza was brought on to bowl the last two balls of the over after Chatara was taken off for those successive beamers. Meanwhile, Marlon Samuels - despite a very unconvincing start to his innings - finishes on 133 not out from 156 balls.

  19. WI 371-1 (Gayle 215*, Samuels 132*)published at 07:06 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Gayle drills a two to the extra cover boundary to move to 212. Chatara fires in a stomach-high full toss which is called as a no-ball for height, and a baseball-style blast brings him two more. The next ball is also called as being a high full toss which Gayle bats away for a single - so not only is it a no-ball, but Chatara is removed from the attack. Astonishing scenes!
