  2. Post update

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

On England's next game against Sri Lanka in Wellington on Sunday: "Sri Lanka have an incredible record against England in Sri Lanka - outside Sri Lanka, they don't travel particularly well. But after today, I'm rather concerned for England - Dilshan batted very well, Sangakkara's in great nick so I'm worried about how many runs Sri Lanka will get, and I'm worried England haven't adopted a more aggressive approach."

  3. Captain's view

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews: "Dilshan and Sangakkara were brilliant, they batted us through, took calculated risks and it was a great effort by the three batters. We were slightly sloppy in the field and could have done better, but once you've got 300 on the board your bowlers can take chances. We're all ready for the England game."

  4. Captain's view

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza: "Our bowlers weren't up to the mark and hopefully in the next match we will improve. They [Sri Lanka batsmen Dilshan and Sangakkara] played well and showed their character today. I hope our next game will be our best in the tournament."

  5. Final scorecard

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"I was quite caught up in all the hype about the game - Bangladesh's record against Sri Lanka is poor but I thought they might do better. This game has followed the other two played at the MCG - teams batting first have piled on the runs and won by a country mile. When you're chasing 300, you either get very close or nowhere near, and when their only firecracker batsman Tamim Iqbal was back in the hutch after two balls of the innings, it was all over."

  7. Man of the match

Tillakaratne Dilshan has been named man of the match for his 161 not out and 2-35. Here is what he has just had to say about his side's win: "I am really happy with today's innings after getting out first ball in the last game.

"I am enjoying my cricket and when I cross the line I don't think about my age.

"I dropped a catch and it is all a part of the game. But I am happy with our performance and we are getting back to a rhythm. This was a good game for us before we move on to the bigger games."

    Bryce McGain

Ex-Australia leg-spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"Sri Lanka have a very experienced line-up, they set a good blueprint with the bat to keep wickets in hand and accelerate in the last few overs. It was an emphatic batting performance - some of the guys didn't get a hit, but if the batters at the top keep doing the job, so be it."

    Bryce McGain

Ex-Australia leg-spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"Sabbir's wringing his hand, looking at his finger - the last thing you want is to lose a player to a hand injury, but it was a brute of a delivery. Malinga's release point is so difficult to pick up, but it was a good catch by Sangakkara. He's been an amazing cricketer."

  10. WICKET

Ahmed lbw Malinga 0 (Ban 240 all out)

Malinga quickly wraps things up by trapping Taskin Ahmed bang in front with a full ball. The finger goes straight up and a review - more out of hope than belief - cannot save Ahmed or his team. It is a 92-run victory for Sri Lanka, who have dominated this game from start to finish. England beware.

    Sabbir c Sangakkara b Malinga 53

Just two balls after bringing up his 50, courtesy of a flick down leg for four, Sabbir goes as the bowler digs one in a bit shorter and catches the batsmen on the gloves before Sangakkara claims.

  13. Ban 234-8 (Sabbir 47, Rubel 0)

Dilshan continues and a pulled single gives new man Rubel Hossain a chance to show what he can do. And this consists of knocking back the four deliveries he faces.

  14. Ban 233-8 (runs required 100)

The game is gone but Sabbir offers at least one moment of genuine positivity during Mathews' over, courtesy of a launched drive past mid-off for four. Other than that it was all very conservative.

    Bryce McGain

  17. WICKET

Mortaza st Sangakkara b Dilshan 7 (Ban 228-8)

Dilshan claims the wicket of Mortaza, who is beaten by the ball and stumped by Sangakkara, in the middle of a crazy over that featured an awful mis-field at point to concede four runs, a reviewed stumping (given not out) and possibly the worst ball you'll see at this tournament, which Dilshan planted near his own feet.

    Scorecard

  18. Ban 222-7 (Sabbir 36, Mortaza 7)

Perera is back on, but his return lasts just two balls (the second of which is pummelled through mid-on for four by Mortaza) before he signals an injury (in his back it would seem) and leaves the field. Mathews takes over and prevents any further boundaries, with both batsmen claiming a single apiece.

  19. Ban 216-7 (Mortaza 1, Sabbir 35)

Herath delivers a neat over to end his spell for the concession of just one further run, courtesy of a turn to leg from Mortaza. The spinner ends with 0-43 from his 10 overs.

  20. Post update

    Jonathan Agnew

    BBC Test Match Special

"He always looks a friendly chap, Herath. I've never had the pleasure of meeting him, but he looks like he could be a village postmaster."

  21. Ban 215-7 (runs required 118)

This is a thankless task for Mashrafe Mortaza, who comes in to join Sabbir at the crease. Sabbir takes responsibility by getting inside a short ball and pulling for four before guiding one down to third man for two. It's all going to be in vain, though.

  25. Ban 204-6 (Mushfiqur 32, Sabbir 29)

Mushfiqur knocks one to leg for a single that brings up 200 for Bangladesh from Malinga's third ball, before Sabbir finally records a powerplay boundary by guiding one down through third man. 10 overs remain, 129 runs to score.

  26. Ban 199-6 (runs required 134)

We've now had four overs of the batting powerplay and we've not had a boundary. If Bangladesh were to pull this off, this was their window to try and do it in. Lakmal's seventh over, which goes for just two singles, is another nail in their coffin.

  27. Ban 197-6 (Sabbir 24, Mushfiqur 30)

Both of these batsmen are set now and should be primed to accelerate. Easier said than done against Malinga, who pounds in and delivers at pace to give Sabbir nothing to swing at. The Bangladesh batsman steers another ball down to third man for two and flicks one to leg for a single to retain strike. Bangladesh creep toward 200 but remain well short of their target.

  28. Ban 193-6 (runs required 140)

Lakmal is back and rattles through his sixth over for the concession of seven runs thanks mainly to a Sabbir pull to mid-wicket and a steer to third man by the same batsman, both of which brought a couple of runs apiece.

  29. Post update

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"I was on tour once with England in India with Samit Patel, who was quite a portly chap but somehow thought he was Usain Bolt. He said he'd race anyone for money, so we put him up against Ravi Bopara, who really was quick. We set up a 100-yard dash in Indore, Samit lost by about 42 yards and couldn't really understand it."

  30. Ban 186-6 (need 147 off 84 balls)

Malinga is back for the powerplay and tries one of his slower, dipping yorkers, which beats Sabbir but is a few inches wide of off stump. It is the closest he gets to a wicket as the Bangladesh pair claim four singles from the over. That doesn't help either side in their immediate goal.

    Lasith Malinga bowling
  31. Ban 182-6 (Mushfiqur 26, Sabbir 14)

Herath pins Bangladesh down again until Sabbir takes a stride down the track and powerfully drives one through cover that beats the diving Chandimal near the rope. They are going to need a few more of those in the next few overs to resurrect their challenge. They've got 151 runs to get and 15 overs to get them in. My basic maths ability tells me that is just a smidge over 10 an over.

  32. Ban 176-6 (Sabbir 9, Mushfiqur 25)

We're back in single territory as Mushfiqur and Sabbir work the ball around the circle to claim three of them, with Dilshan helping them out by angling a ball down the leg side for a wide. However, the required run-rate is now very close to 10 an over.

    Dilshan
  33. Ban 171-6 (runs required 162)

Mathews return is short-lived as Herath come back for some more spin. Sabbir looks to keep up the momentum established by Shakib with a sweep for four off the last ball of the over.

  34. Post update

    Bryce McGain

Ex-Australia leg-spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"Long-off and long-on had gone back, Shakib went to chip it dead straight and didn't get it as precise as he wanted to. Maybe his bat's too good - it came off the middle and it went straight to long-on. They need maybe 10 an over, but it's not as daunting now they play so much T20. But the boundaries here at the MCG are more vast then maybe they're used to."

  35. Ban 165-6 (Sabbir 1, Mushfiqur 23)

Dilshan removes the danger man to further boost his man of the match credentials. The new man is Sabbir Rahman, who gets off the mark with push to cover for one.

  36. WICKET

    Shakib c Malinga b Dilshan 46 (Ban 164-6)

Malinga makes no mistake this time as he steadies himself to successfully claim a catch offered by Shakib's chip to mid-on off Dilshan. Briefly, Bangladesh had hopes of pulling off a miracle, but that is surely now a line drawn under such lofty optimistic aspirations.

  37. Dropped catch

Mushfiqur has a go at Dilshan, who he launches back down the ground. Malinga is under it but he is right on the boundary rope and he cannot claim the catch. To rub salt in the wound he drops it over the rope for six.

  38. Ban 157-5 (Shakib 46, Mushfiqur 15)

Mathews brings himself back into the attack to try and halt Bangladesh's mini-revival. Shakib's assualt continues, though, as he slices the first ball over the keeper for four before cutting one to the boundary through backward point. A single takes him to 46. We've already seen one team come back from a losing position to win today. Can Bangladesh do an Afghanistan here?

  40. Ban 145-5 (runs required 188)

Shakib has clearly decided he's had enough of singles. He suddenly looks far more aggressive in his intent. And it rubs off on Mushfiqur, who pulls a short one from Dilshan through mid-wicket for four. It is good to see but surely it has come too late?

  41. Post update

One line from the England camp today. Fast bowler Steven Finn has welcomed plans for a Big Bash-style franchise Twenty20 league in English cricket.

"I think that for a while now we've been a bit behind the times when it's come to T20 cricket," he told BBC Sport. "I think it would been a great step in the right direction for us if it did happen."

Ian: ‏Hate to say this but it would be best for England if Sri Lanka gave Bangladesh a real thrashing today.

  43. Ban 138-5 (Mushfiqur 10, Shakib 34)

That's more like it from Bangladesh. Shakib plants his right boot down the track and launches the first ball of Herath's seventh over back over the bowlers head and over the rope for six. A few balls later he drives on the floor to the mid-off boundary before hammering one a bit wider all the way to the rope. Finally, some intent. 16 from the over.

    Shakib and Herath
  44. Ban 122-5 (Shakib 18, Mushfiqur 10)

Another Dilshan over, another two runs conceded. Sri Lanka don't need to be out of first gear to maintain their control on the match here.

  45. Ban 120-5 (runs required 213)

Even the previously staunch and defiant Bangladesh fans are a bit subdued now. Malinga mixes his length in search of another breakthrough, which does not come but not at the cost of anything significant. A flicked single to leg from each batsmen is all that comes off the over. You have to wonder what (if any) game plan Bangladesh are exercising now?

  46. Ban 118-5 (Shakib 16, Mushfuqir 8)

The Bangladesh pair are struggling to get the ball off the square at the moment. Dilshan concedes just three singles from his second over and this match is slowly fizzling out to nothing. Shame.

  48. Ban 115-5 (Shakib 14, Mushfiqur 7)

Mathews is going for the jugular as he recalls Malinga to the attack. They would love to get this wrapped up quickly now so they can turn their attention to England on Sunday. The pace bowler beats the outside edge three times during the over as Bangladesh survive to add two runs to their total.

    Malinga bowls
  49. Ban 113-5 (Mushfiqur 6, Shakib 13)

Not content with batting all 50 overs of the Sri Lankan innings, Dilshan wants a go with the ball. His man of the match hopes are almost boosted further when he catches the outside edge of Shakib's bat but it is too far wide for Sangakkara to snare. Later in the over, Dilshan somehow fails to hit the stumps after angling a ball through the attempted back-foot drive of the Bangladeshi batsman.

Bibhash Dash: ‏Have Bangladesh heard of promotion? Shakib has come out on 84-4. Does he attack, does he build? Damned either way.

  51. Ban 110-5 (Perera 1-29 off 6)

Shakib has over 4000 ODI runs to his name and has scored six 100s in his 142 matches. He has a top score of 134 and it is going to need a repeat of that if his team are to pull off the near impossible here. He and Mushfiqur claim five more runs off Perera's sixth over.

  52. Ban 105-5 (Mushfiqur 4, Shakib 7)

Herath continues bowling duty following his role in the dismissal of Mahmudullah. Bangladesh claim five from it. Just the 228 runs needed now at 8.14 an over!

    Herath catch
  53. Ban 100-5 (Mushfiqur 1, Shakib 6)

The over started poorly from Sri Lanka's point of view with a boundary and a wide, but ended well as Bangladesh's hopes of resurrecting a challenge was all but snubbed out. Mushfiqur Rahim has joined Shakib at the crease. A miracle is the request from his team-mates.

  55. WICKET

A boundary does come as Mahmudullah pulls over mid-wicket to bring up the Bangladesh 100. But any momentum that might have sparked is halted as the same batsmen misjudges a pull and top-edges skyward for Herath to scamper in from fine leg and catch. The spinner almost misjudged the catch badly but recovered just in time to claim it. Bangladesh are sinking without trace.

  57. Cricket catch-up

In case you missed it earlier, Afghanistan sealed a historic first World Cup win by beating Scotland by one wicket. But that only tells a fraction of what was a truly dramatic story in Dunedin. With Afghanistan at 144-8 chasing a total of 210, it looked like Scotland were set to record their own first ever World Cup win. However, Samiullah Shenwari's 96 put Andy Moles's team within sight of victory before he was out with 19 still needed. Last man Shapoor Zadran joined Hamid Hassan at the crease and the two saw their team home with three balls to go, with the former hitting the winning runs.

  58. Ban 95-4 (Mahmudullah 24, Shakib 6)

Mahmudullah burgles another single through mid-on off Herath before Shakib does likewise with a prod to leg. The over ends with another single from a back-foot drive from the right-hander. These two are picking up singles well but they desperately need boundaries.

  59. Ban 92-4 (runs required 241)

The overs are ticking by and Bangladesh are not making inroads into that imposing Sri Lankan score. Shakib runs a single down to third man and Mahmudullah chips one to leg for another one but it is nowhere near enough when there's over 240 runs still to get. There is only one way this game is going and it does not end well for the team batting second.

  77. Ban 60-3 (Anamul 17, Mahmudullah 9)

There is still life in Bangladesh. Mahmudullah claims his first boundary with a flick through square leg off Mathews. He then claims four leg byes courtesy of a loose ball down leg. Regarding the Sri Lanka referral earlier, apparently there was a technical problem with Snicko, meaning it could not be used, and so their referral has been restored.

  78. Vaas and Atapattu honoured

A bit of Sri Lanka news - former captain (and current coach) Marvan Atapattu and ex-seam bowler Chaminda Vaas have both been handed honorary life membership of MCC in recognition of their playing achievements.

They will be donning their stripy ties alongside 11 other Sri Lankan honorary members, including Kumar Sangakkara and Muttiah Muralitharan.

  79. Ban 49-3 (Mahmudullah 3, Anamul 16)

Bangladesh have had the wind completely taken out of their sails. It could have got even worse for them as well as Anamul pokes a drive just a yard over the outstretched hand of Dilshan at point. Then, in the final ball the same batsman looks to push a shot over mid-off but doesn't catch it and is only rescued by a drop from Mathews.

    Anamul Haque
  80. Post update

In case you've just joined us, you've missed a batting masterclass from two Sri Lankan old-timers. Tillakaratne Dilshan posted his highest ODI score with an unbeaten 161, while Kumar Sangakkara scored a sublime 105 not out off 76 balls in his 400th one-day international.

    Kumar Sangakkara
  81. Ban 46-3 (runs required 287)

Mathews continues, trying to press home Sri Lanka's advantage. It is another tidy over that goes for just two runs, from the first ball. Interesting to see Mahmudullah come out at five. Usually, Shakib Al Hasan fills that spot, but he is still to appear.

  82. Ban 44-3 (Mahmudullah 1, Anamul 13)

You can't take your eyes off this match for a minute. Boundaries, dropped catches, bizarre referrals and wickets; we've had it all in the seven overs so far. Bangladesh need to consolidate here. Not that they've got much time to do so. They still need 289 runs. Mahmudullah is the new man and he is quickly off the mark with a single.

  83. WICKET

    Monimul c Jayawardene b Lakmal 1 (Ban 41-3)

Who needs a referral? Monimul goes next ball as he slices a short ball straight to Mahela Jayawardene at slip. Bangladesh are falling apart.

  84. Umpire review

Lakmal returns in place of Malinga and sparks a referral with his first ball, which Sri Lanka believe Monimul Haque nicked with the bottom of his bat. Snicko is not shown and it is given not out, much to the bemusement and frustration of the Sri Lankan players.

  85. WICKET

    Sarkar c Sangakkara b Mathews 25 (Ban 40-2)

Angelo Mathews takes an executive decision to remove Lakmal from the attack and bring himself on. It doesn't stem the boundaries, though as Anamul pulls a short delivery for six over backward point. Mathews hits back, though, as Sarkar chases a fullish, wide delivery - the fifth of the over - and edges to Sangakkara. It brings an end to a promising partnership and ushers Mominul Haque to the crease.

Jon Benger: Swann's comment at 07:48 shows how out of touch the #ECB are. We wanted good attacking cricket, not huddles!!

  87. Ban 33-1 (Anamul 6, Sarkar 25)

Malinga starts round the wicket to the left-handed Sarkar before switching back to over two balls in. It almost has an immediate impact with the batsman chipping the ball just a yard over the outstretched hand of a diving Lahiru Thirimanne at short midwicket. It results in one of the two singles taken off the over.

  88. Ban 31-1 (Sarkar 24, Anamul 5)

Bangladesh continue to attack with Sarkar punching a drive through cover for four off Lakmal before lofting a drive past mid-off for another boundary. He makes it a hat-trick with a superb checked drive, much to the delight of the Bangladesh fans in the rapidly-filling MCG stands. Bangladesh have responded very well to the early wicket.

  89. Ban 17-1 (Sarkar 11, Anamul 5)

Malinga bounds in for his second over, keeping it full and economical early on before a short delivery is dispatched through square leg for four by Anamul for the only runs of the over.

  90. Ban 13-1 (Anamul 1, Sarkar 11)

Well, Bangladesh are trying to take the game to Sri Lanka. They have no choice really, with the total they have to chase down. Sarkar drives through point for four before picking up a single.

  91. Dropped catch

Suranga Lakmal is Malinga's opening partner with the ball for Sri Lanka. And in his second delivery he tempts a loose shot from Anamul to sky the ball inside the circle. Dilshan gets under it but doesn't even get a finger on it as the ball goes down. Not even tiredness can excuse that.

    Lasith Malinga
  92. Ban 6-1 (Anamul 0, Sarkar 6)

The left-handed Soumya Sarkar is the new man and he is greeted to the crease with a nasty swinging delivery from Malinga that smacks him on the toes. Sarkar gets his revenge, though, with a straight drive past the bowler for four to get himself and his team on the board before taking the last ball for two.

  93. WICKET

    Tamim b Malinga 0 (Ban 0-1)

Afghanistan batsmen Hamid Hassan (left) and Shapoor Zadran (centre) celebrate as Scotland"s Richie Berrington (right) reacts

  102. SL 332-1

    Dilshan 161, Sangakkara 105

Dilshan whips a low full toss away for four. Sanga misses a scoop shot but makes amends by clouting one through the leg side for four. The last ball finds a fielder for a single to take us to 332-1. That's quite some total. Bangladesh need 333 to win. I can't see it, can you?

  103. Sangakkara 100

Sagakkara is on strike for the last over and he wastes no time in bringing up his 22nd ODI century with a chip into the off side. 73 balls faced. What a player. What a career.

  104. SL 320-1

    Sri Lanka fans

There's a feverish air to the Sri Lankan support as they anticipate Kumar's three figures. Two singles take him to 98, then Dilshan clubs one off his toes through midwicket to bring up his 150. A wide yorker is squeezed away for three. Is this Sanga's moment? No, a single, for 99 not out.

  105. SL 309-1

And so it goes on. Dilshan brings up the SL 300 with a sweep, then reverse sweeps Shakib for another four. The last ball of the over brings the third boundary as Dilshan heaves a length ball past square leg to reach 148 big ones.

In reply, Afghanistan slipped from 42-0 to 97-7 but Samiullah Shenwari made the most of being dropped at slip on 20 to hit 96 and see his side to a dramatic one-wicket victory with three balls to spare.

  155. Afg 173-8 (need 38 runs off 24 balls)

Fans and officials from both sides are biting their nails, almost praying for something to go their way in these tense closing overs. The run-rate is mounting as Hamid Hassan uses up three balls without scoring, then takes a single to third man. Shenwari keeps the strike with a single to cover.

  156. Afg 170-8 (need 41 runs off 30 balls)

    Majid Haq and Hamid Hassan

Scotland won't need reminding that Majid Haq dropped a straightforward slip catch to get rid of Shenwari when he was on 20. In fact, Haq is having a mare... the spinner missing a chance to run out Hamid Hassan with the batsman stranded mid-pitch when he can't get the ball out of his hands in time from the non-striker's end. Two more chipped from the ever-decreasing target.

  157. Afg 168-8 (need 43 runs off 36 balls)

Whatever happens now, Shenwari does not deserve to finish on the losing side. He's really worn his heart on his sleeve during this innings, it clearly means so much. Scotland bring in two slips for Hamid Hassan and test him with a short one which is pulled to the boundary for four. A yorker is then dug out for a single meaning he retains the strike.

  158. Afg 161-8 (need 50 runs off 42 balls)

    Samiullah Shenwari

Four dot balls and then Shenwari goes for broke - planting Majid Haq onto the pavilion roof. He's giving everything here, kneeling as the ball sails over the boundary. It's probably due to sheer mental exhaustion.

  160. Afg 155-8 (target 211)

This is Scotland's Edgbaston 05. Who will be their Steve Harmison? Evans runs his fingers across the seam and beats Hamid Hassan on the outside edge, then pulls up in his delivery stride to try and unsettle the nervy number 10. Shenwari has words... this could get sparky. Hamid Hassan is trying to restrain himself and watches one go past him, then Matt Cross saves four leg byes with some athletic keeping. 167. Afg 148-8 (target 211)

Just waking up? First of all... good morning. Now, before you put the kettle on, let me tell you Scotland are two wickets away from their first ever Cricket World Cup victory. However, Afghanistan are putting up a late fight - Shenwari clouting Josh Davey for six over mid-wicket and then four through the off side. The comparison between the two sides is almost identical now. Who will prevail?

  168. How's stat?

    Andrew Samson

    BBC Test Match Special statistician

Samiullah Shenwari's 113-ball fifty is the slowest for Afghanistan in ODIs.

It was 95 by Asghar Stanikzai v Australia in Sharjah in 2012 and 95 Samiullah Shenwari v Ireland in Dubai in 2015

There have only been two slower 50s in all ODIs since 1 January, 2008:

119 balls Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka v Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2009 and 119 balls Misbah-ul-Haq of Pakistan v West Indies in Providence in 2013

  169. Afg 137-8 (need 74 runs off 72 balls)

Adjacent to the University Ovals, a large group of rugby players have arrived for training and are just beginning their warm-ups. They love the oval ball in New Zealand. Back to the cricket, Shenwari nails a pull shot to the boundary sweeper but declines to takes the single so early in the over. He eventually takes the one to put Hamid Hassan on strike. Three dots. Scotland turning the screw.

  170. Sri Lanka v Bangladesh update

    Tillakaratne Dilshan bats

Bangladesh are working hard to tie down the Sri Lankan openers, but still they can't take a wickets. Dilshan breaks the shackles by smacking the last ball of the 20th over through the covers for four.

  172. Afg 133-8 (target 211)

Shenwari was livid with Zadran after that dismissal. Replays showed him hitting the turf with his bat, crouching to the floor in disappointment and then rising to his feet to have words with his batting partner as he sloped off. Has Zadran cost his side the game? One from the over.

Golden-arm Berrington strikes again. And what is Zadran doing? His batting partner Shenwari, who is well set on 48, gives a bit more responsibility to the tailender who responds by hoicking a catch high into the air and Preston Mommsen does the honours at mid-off.

  174. Afg 126-7 (need 85 runs off 96 balls)

The field is spread as Scotland try and tempt Shenwari into turning over the strike. It's like a game of chess now. The right-hander eventually obliges and Dawlat Zadran is given three balls to deal with. He takes a single from the second one, and Shenwari can't retain the strike. Is this Scotland's chance to break this partnership?

  176. Afg 124-7 (Berrington 7-0-23-3)

There's a touch of the Paul Collingwoods about Scotland's canny medium pacer Richie Berrington. Twelve steps before he delivers the ball, he gets in close to the wicket and tries to bowl wicket to wicket. The singles are there for Shenwari, but the Afghan batsman would rather wait for the boundaries as he farms the strike. Another seven from the over.

  177. Bangladesh v Sri Lanka update

    SL 71-0 (15 overs)

    Mushfiqur Rahim and Anamul Haque

Tillakaratne Dilshan is just starting to go through the gears at the MCG, punching Mahmudullah through the covers for his fourth four. The sting has been taken out of the Bangladeshi attack and Sri Lanka are setting themselves up for a big total. Thirimanne has 34, Dilshan has 31.

  178. Afg 117-7 (target 211)

Shenwari's change in tack prompts Scotland to bring on Majid Haq. Not a bad move to get the spinner to serve up some tempters. Just one from the over.

  179. Afg 116-7 (Shenwari 38, Zadran 2)

    Samiullah Shenwari

Samiullah Shenwari is a useful player for Afghanistan to rely on. He has over 1,100 ODI runs and eight half-centuries. In this innings, he has also become the leading run-scorer for Afghanistan in ODIs. The right-hander clips Iain Wardlaw for four through the leg side to keep the scoreboard ticking, then carves another boundary over mid-off. Go hard or go home.

  186. Afg 100-7 (Shenwari 25 of 75 balls)

Richie Berrington is supposed to be a part-time bowler, but he's got three key wickets here. That success has put a couple of clicks on his bowling speed too - he's running in a little harder and with much more relish now. Dawlat Zadran gets off the mark with two which brings up the 100 for Afghanistan.

  187. Afg 98-7 (target 211)

Thanks Phil, you've played a blinder for Scotland there. I make it a 20 over spell of seven wickets for 71 runs. Josh Davey, with his textbook run-up to the wicket, delivers a maiden over. That'll do.

  188. Afg 98-7 (Zadran 0, Shenwari 25)

Berrington has two slips in. That is a testimony to how he has bowled in this match, maximising his gentle pace to superb effect. Just the one run from his fifth over. I now hand you back to Mr Marc Higginson, who will see this game through to the close.

  189. Afg 97-7 (Zadran 0, Shenwari 24)

The Scotland players jog round as another successful over ends. Dawlat Zadran has joined Shenwari at the crease. As long as Shenwari is there, Afghanistan will believe they can still pull off an unlikely win. It will have to be some innings, though.

  192. WICKET

    Zadran c Haq b Berrington 4 (Afg 96-6)

He may not be the most threatening bowler in the world but Berrington is doing a superb job for Scotland here. Two balls after slightly over-pitching and allowing Zadran to get off the mark with a driven four, he finds a much better length and tempts the batsman into a ill-timed flash and catches an edge behind to Haq at slip. No mistakes this time for the off-spinner, who claims and runs away in delight. Scotland are now firmly in control.

  193. Sri Lanka v Bangladesh update

    SL 17-0 (5 overs)

    Lahiru Thirimanne

Thirimanne got a golden duck in Sri Lanka's nervy victory over Afghanistan but there are signs that he might make Bangladesh pay for their early profligacy in Melbourne. The left-hander has advanced to 11 not out alongside Dilshan (3 not out) in a cautious start by the 1996 champs.

  194. Afg 90-5 (Shenwari 22, Zadran 0)

Shenwari has not looked entirely convincing, but there is a lot of pressure on him now. The left-handed Najibullah Zadran is the new man at the crease and he is able to survive his first ball after Shenwari clips the over's only run to long leg.

Oh, so close! Ahmadi steers a short ball from the returning Wardlaw just a few inches over the outstretched hand of Haq at slip. That would have been a key wicket for Scotland. Instead, the batsman remains at the crease to take a single next ball and reach his 50 from 48 balls. Scotland captain Preston Mommsen has now been forced to turn to his fifth-choice bowler Richie Berrington who is more a batsman who bowls a bit. This is the weakness in the Scottish team."

  212. Afg 74-2 (Shenwari 13, Ahmadi 45)

This is where Scotland struggle; they simply don't have the strength in depth in their bowling to maintain a consistent threat. They turn to Berrington, who with the best will in the world is gentle medium pace at best. It is a decent first over, but one that Ahmadi sees through with ease and plunders for four runs to take him closer to 50.

  213. Bangladesh boosted by Brisbane rain

Bangladesh meet Sri Lanka at the Melbourne Cricket Ground knowing that the weather gods have already smiled kindly upon them during this World Cup.

Having picked up an unexpected point when their match against Australia at the Gabba was called off as a no result after heavy rain in Brisbane, Bangladesh lie in third place in Pool A with three points following their impressive 105-run win over Afghanistan.

Victory over Sri Lanka would mean that one further win from the Pool A games against New Zealand, England or Scotland would see them progress to the quarter-finals.

  214. Afg 70-2 (Ahmadi 42, Shenwari 12)

You can see the temptation to Ahmadi, as he considers taking a stride to Haq and planting him down the ground. He resists, though, and the off-spinner goes for a trio of singles.

  215. England women update

Charlotte Edwards and Sarah Taylor look to be steering England to a commanding victory over hosts New Zealand in the fourth one-day international in Lincoln.

Captain Edwards, leading England for the 201st time, has 49 and Taylor 47 in England's 107-1, chasing 168 for victory. Heather Knight is the only wicket to fall - she was dismissed for five with the score on 11.

  216. Afg 67-2 (Evans 2-20 off 5)

Evans remains in the Scotland attack and ruins his otherwise efficient over with a short one which Shenwari cuts away from four to the off-side boundary. He then chucks his last down leg for a wide before beating the outside edge with an excellent extra delivery.

It is delicately poised now. A wicket will bring Scotland firmly into the game, but they don't have the kind of total to allow this pair to settle.

  217. Mathews wary of Bangladesh threat

Sri Lanka were well beaten by New Zealand in their first Pool A match and were indebted to Mahela Jayawardene's century in the second as they laboured to a four-wicket win over Afghanistan.

"This will be a pressure match for all of us," Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews said.

"Bangladesh have a good set of players and we have to take all their batsmen and bowlers seriously."

  218. Afg 62-2 (Ahmadi 40, Shenwari 7)

Spinner Majid Haq is into the attack and the change almost produces a wicket as Shenwari flicks one to square leg ands sets off only to have to scamper back and just make his ground before the bails are whipped off from a throw. Scotland will be encouraged that there are still some nerves on show from Afghanistan.

Evans cannot repeat the fireworks of his previous over but it is another tidy effort; a maiden which ties Shenwari at the striker's end. Ahmadi is clearly the danger man and one simple way of dealing with that: keep him off strike and frustrate him. Scotland were 38-1 at this stage.

  228. Afg 48-2 (Shenwari 1, Ahmadi 34)

Prior to that Evans over, the Scotland attack had tempted out a couple of false shots but had otherwise looked pretty tame as Afghanistan took the game to them. Now, it is the batting side looking nervous as the Scots bounce round in the field. Davey's over goes for a couple of singles, including one that gets the new man Samiullah Shenwari off the mark.

  230. WICKET

    Mangal b Evans 6 (Afg 42-1)

    Nawroz Mangal out

Evans does make the breakthrough! A ball after Mangal had top-edged a shortish ball just short of fine-leg, Evans nips one right through a poor defensive shot and cleans him up. Scotland are up and running.

  231. Afg 40-0 (Mangal 6, Ahmadi 32)

    Javed Ahmadi

Wardlaw pounds in for another over (his fourth), but he fails to make the breakthrough. His last two balls get the Ahmadi treatment as the opener takes a couple of steps down the track and launches the ball to long-on for four before pulling to the on side boundary. This is looking ominous now. Afghanistan are quickly eating into that Scotland total.

  232. Afg 31-0 (Ahmadi 24, Mangal 6)

Cheers Marc. Well, Ahmadi is doing his best impression of another Pudsey man, Len Hutton, here swinging away at everything Scotland have to offer. It is his partner that comes to the fore this over, though. A pummelling drive is stopped just short of the cover boundary by some good Scotland fielding before Evans almost sneaks one past a very shaky defensive shot.

  233. Dropped catch

    Afg 27-0

    Nawroz Mangal

Oh no. Nawroz Mangal fences at one outside off stump but Preston Mommsen's fine effort at second slip is not enough and the catch goes to ground. The over ends with Javed Ahmadi clattering another boundary - this is a decent start for the Afghans.

And with that, allow me to hand over the live text baton to Pudsey's finest, Phil Dawkes.

  234. Afg 18-0 (Ahmadi 16, Mangal 1)

Javed Ahmadi must have a table booked at Miga Korean BBQ Restaurant tonight. It's the best restaurant in town according to my internet search. The aggressive right-hander gives Josh Davey the charge and belts another four, then when the bowler readjusts his length, cuts another boundary through backward point.

  235. Afg 10-0 (target 211)

The tall, muscular Iain Wardlaw, with his side parting blowing in the Dunedin breeze, sends down a bouncer which is too short and called a wide. He then stands and watches in disbelief as Javed Ahmadi walks down the crease and belts four through the covers.

There we have it then. Scotland complete their 50 overs and have set Afghanistan 211 to win.

  248. WICKET

Evans c Nabi b Shapoor 28 (Scotland 210 all out)

Another wicket for Shapoor, who finishes with a four-for as Nabi takes an excellent catch in the covers. A gutsy knock from Alasdair Evans ends in the final ball of the innings.

  249. WICKET

    Haq c Naib b Shapoor 31 (Sco 206-9)

A sensible and calculated 51-ball knock comes to an end when the left-hander slices high into the off side and Naib takes an excellent diving catch just outside the circle.

  250. Sco 206-8 (Haq 31, Evans 25)

Scotland reach that magical figure of 200 when Alasdair Evans flays a full toss from Naib over extra cover for four. Two more come with a firm push into the off side and some aggressive running, then four leg byes run down to fine leg. Is this a match-winning partnership? One over to go.

  251. That's a record

    Andrew Samson

    BBC Test Match Special statistician

"Scotland have now made their highest score in World Cup matches. Their previous best was 186-8 v South Africa at Basseterre in 2007.

"The only other teams that have not reached 200 in a World Cup match are East Africa (best of 128) and Bermuda (best of 156) and they only played three games each."

  252. Sco 196-8 (Haq 31, Evans 19)

Afghanistan's fielding has been woeful at times. They spurn another run-out opportunity when a shy at the stumps fails to connect with the target. Majid Haq takes Scotland to their highest ever World Cup total by flicking Shapoor for two into the leg side. A beamer is then hit for four so, coupled with the no-ball, that's another five added to the score. Throw in another four, which brings up the 50 partnership of 72 balls, and Scotland are motoring.

  253. Sco 183-8 (Hassan 10-1-32-1)

From looking like a simple run-chase for Afghanistan, this partnership has given Scotland a real chance of victory. Hamid Hassan keeps things tight in his final over, sending down five dots and conceding just a single. Another excellent display from Rambo.

There are some strange sights in the crowd today. One lady is dressed as a car tyre, there's a bloke wearing a sports shoe fancy dress outfit and then somebody else looking like a television. It seems to be something to do with sponsors. Nabi races through his final over, which goes for two runs.

  257. Sco 180-8 (Haq 20, Evan 16)

Afghanistan miss the chance of a run-out and then the ball runs for four overthrows. These are bonus runs for Scotland, which are being accrued just by batting out their overs. Eight from the over.

  259. Sco 172-8 (Naib 8-0-47-1)

This is nice, sensible batting from Scotland who are edging towards the 200 they crave. Majid Haq drives Naib for two before the bowler delivers the 11th wide of the innings. Combine that with the runs given away by mistakes in the field and I reckon it's in excess of 20. Could prove costly if the game is close.

"We haven't seen the ball hit aerially to mid-on or mid-off the whole innings. That is something to do with the pace of the bowling, as well as the length, but also how Scotland have stayed in their crease. Scotland have taken an area of the field away by not coming forward. The intention of saying we're just going to nurdle the ball around hasn't been the answer."

  261. Sco 167-8 (partnership: 23)

There's quite a few schoolchildren in the ground today and they get every excitable in front of the camera as they wave Afghanistan and Scotland flags. And one lad holds up a Rubik's Cube. What's the strangest thing you've ever taken to the cricket? He's probably got Ker-Plunk in his bag.

Shapoor is back into the attack and he is milked for ones and twos by the wagging Scotland tail.

  262. England women update

England women need 169 to level the one-day series against New Zealand after dismissing the White Ferns for 168 off the last ball of the innings in Lincoln.

Kate Cross with 5-24 and Rebecca Grundy with 3-36 led the way for England while Amy Satterthwaite top-scored with 27.

  263. Sco 163-8 (run-rate 3.88)

There's another brief delay while Majid Haq changes bats after his last one broke at the end of the previous over. It's not the first time the willow has snapped in this tournament. Alasdair Evans, whose highest ODI score is 22, runs a boundary down to third man and he looks quite set. He then shuffles in his crease to try and disrupt Naib's line and it works as he guides a single down to fine leg.

  264. Sco 157-8 (Haq 8, Evans 7)

Just beyond the grassy banks of the University Oval, there's a hot dog van in view. I always like the wide array of different foods at the Test match, although I baulked at £8 for a burrito at one ground last summer.

Back to more pressing matters, Scotland are keeping Afghanistan at bay for now. Their tail is showing commendable aptitude against the seaming ball as they eek out the odd single which will give them a fighting chance once they get the ball in hand.

  265. Sco 155-8 (Hassan 9-1-31-1)

A policeman waves an Afghanistan flag

It seems the local bobbies are supporting Afghanistan today. They'll be pleased with the scoreline then. Hamid Hassan continues to beat the outside edge with seam movement and slight lift. When the big man does pitch one up, he is flayed through the covers by Majid Haq.

  266. Sco 149-8 (run-rate: 3.82)

There is a brief delay between overs while Majid Haq puts tape over some sponsorship on his gloves. Too much branding on display it seems. Just one from the over.

Hamid Hassan's stock delivery appears to be the one which jags back into the right-hander at a decent lick. After seeing the way Alex Hales struggled with such deliveries against India last year, I reckon he could pose the England man some problems if the two go head to head in the final group game. Five dots, then a boundary for Alasdair Evans.

"There have been some good balls bowled but you look back at that fourth-wicket partnership between Machan and Mommsen. They were going well and Machan, a senior player and batting well with almost 30 overs left, went for a big shot and got out. Given that three wickets had gone and the frailty of the batsmen to follow that was a wasteful wicket and Afghanistan knew they could press the batsmen once he had gone."

  270. Sco 144-8 (D Zadran 8-1-26-3)

    Afghanistan fans

"We are the Afghans," shout the Asian side's supporters, who claim to be an offshoot of the Barmy Army. Good effort. Scotland's last hope of a half-decent score seems to have ended with the dismissal of Richie Berrington.

  271. WICKET

    Berrington c Zazai b D Zadran 25 (Sco 144-8)

    Richie Berrington is out

Another one bites the dust as Dawlat Zadran picks up his third wicket. After beating the batsman with one which nips back, he runs one across the outside edge and the wicketkeeper does the rest.

  272. Sco 143-7 (run-rate: 3.97)

Time for the powerplay. Hamid Hassan is given the task of bowling in it, after going through a wide array of stretches during the last over. He's such a colourful and energetic character - I have no idea, but he strikes me as somebody who might be a dressing room joker. He starts off by jagging one into Richie Berrington's pads. Not out, but it's close.

  273. How's stat?

"Before today Afghanistan had only bowled Scotland out one in their eight previous ODIs. That was at Benoni in 2009 when Scotland scored 206, which was their first meeting and actually Afghanistan's first ever ODI.

(206 is not Scotland's lowest total v Afghanistan as they made 199-8 in 50 overs at Sharjah in 2013).

  274. Sco 142-7 (Berrington 24, Haq 2)

Majid Haq might have a first-class century to his name, but he doesn't have a bat sponsor. His bat looks like an over-sized toothpick as he sits back in his crease and guides a single down to fine leg. Two from the over.

  279. Sco 134-7 (Berrington 18, Haq 0)

    Afghanistan

I reckon Afghanistan's bowling attack, given the right conditions, could cause England some problems in their final group game. I can see the headlines now, and they ain't pretty. A close shave for Scotland as Afghanistan review a potential caught behind against Richie Berrington. Nabi is the bowler and replays show there is no edge, but is it lbw? It's umpire's call so the not out decision is upheld.

  285. England women update

Seamer Kate Cross has finished her 10 overs with the impressive figures of 5-24 to restrict New Zealand to 100-8 from 33 overs in the fourth one-day international in Lincoln. Left-arm spinner Rebecca Grundy, playing in her third ODI, has also bowled well, taking 3-20 from six overs.

England, 2-1 down in the five-match series, will have high hopes of levelling the series now.

  286. Sco 132-6 (Shapoor 5-0-15-1)

Afghanistan fan and a man dressed as a horse

The gentle, but nagging, medium pace from Naib continues to pose a threat to the Scottish batsmen. He is being backed up by some energetic close fielding. Richie Berrington, with seven ODI half-centuries to his name, gives a short, wide one the treatment when he carves four past backward point.

  292. Sco 117-5 (extras: 14)

In the grounds of this compact stadium, there's a game of Kwik Cricket going on between a handful of youngsters. Plastic bat, ball and stumps... brings back memories. Scotland benefit from five wides when Nabi strays down leg. An unexpected bonus.

  293. Sco 108-5 (Hassan 6-1-20-1)

Hamid Hassan bowls a toe-crushing yorker which Matt Cross does well to dig out. There's still a slip in place, with the boys in light blue knowing they are one wicket away from exposing the Scotland tail. Again, Rambo sends in a timber-seeking yorker which Richie Berrington jabs down on. Just one run from the over.

  295. Sco 104-5 (run-rate 4.16)

Afghanistan go in for the kill and bring back Rambo. Hamid Hassan has an impressive ODI record, with 51 wickets at 19 coming into this match. You don't see many better numbers than that. "That's a big wicket because he's Scotland's most dangerous player but he took liberties there. Nabi is a very old fashioned spinner, no great thrills and he gets close to the stumps. Machan made room and stepped away to leg, which is a high risk shot given the number of overs left and those bails went flying. It's a bad judgement because they were going along quite nicely. It's a bit of a waste."

Why, why, why? Matt Machan will be asking himself that question a few times in the next few hours after he is bowled by off-spinner Nabi, who goes round the wicket to the left-handed Scot, holds one back and knocks back the off stick. A promising partnership is ended.

  305. Sco 92-3 (run-rate: 4.38)

These two are putting Scotland into a decent position, and bring up their 50 partnership off 54 balls. It's the second time they have done so in nine innings batting together. I quite like the Scotland one-day kit. It's dark blue, of course, with a tartan pattern on the arms. It's steady as she goes for the Scots at the moment, with the good balls being defended and the bad ones getting the treatment. 319. Sco 48-3 (Machan 5, Mommsen 5)

Hamid Hassan loves to accessorise. He's wearing war paint, a team-coloured bandana and sticky tape/plasters on his arm. Scotland are on the back foot now and they push the odd single into the gaps as their rebuilding job begins.

Duncan Garrett: Got a feeling this Afghanistan attack is going to cause England some grief when they play.

  321. Sco 44-3 (D Zadran 5-1-14-2)

The biggest compliment I can pay Afghanistan is that their bowling does not look associate standard. There are Test-playing nations who haven't got a trio of quicks as good as Dawlat Zadran, Shapoor Zadran and Hamid Hassan. All three are quick and all three can move the ball off the seam. Scotland skipper Preston Mommsen is off the mark with a cut for four.

Ex-New Zealand wicketkeeper on BBC Test Match Special

"Scotland, up until the last over, would have been quite happy to be only one down but now Afghanistan have their tails up and it's going to be very hard work for Scotland.

"We saw Afghanistan's adrenaline last time become a bit of an issue but they are a bit calmer today and don't seem to be getting so carried away."

  323. WICKET

    Coetzer b D Zadran 25 (Sco 40-3)

    Kyle Coetzer

Scotland... you're in a pickle now. Kyle Coetzer is bowled by one which nips back and gets through the gap between bat and pad to rattle the timbers. Coetzer was playing down the wrong line - he played down Bakerloo when it was on Piccadilly.

  324. Sco 40-2 (Hassan 3-1-9-1)

Matt Machan joins Kyle Coetzer at the crease. Possibly Scotland's two best batsmen together at a critical time.

  325. WICKET

    Gardiner lbw b Hassan 5 (Sco 38-2)

    Hamid Hassan

Third time lucky for Hamid Hassan, who has a leg-before and a strangle down the leg side against Hamish Gardiner turned down. There's no doubt about the third appeal though as the ball crashes into the right-hander's pad. Plumb.

  326. Sco 38-1 (run-rate: 3.80)

The average score in the first 10 overs of this World Cup is 47. Hardly trailblazing stuff - teams prefer to lay a solid foundation and then go big at the end. The general rule now is to double the score at 31 overs. That's what the stats say anyway.

Scotland are ticking along fairly nicely - ones and twos the main fayre for now.

  327. Sco 33-1 (Coetzer 25, Gardiner 2)

Kyle Coetzer is middling the ball nicely, no edges on his bat. Hamid Hassan delivers a maiden over.

  328. Sco 33-1 (Shapoor 4-0-13-0)

Shapoor has changed ends. He's now running in from the other end! I'm not sure that it's official name, but it'll do for now.

Anyway, Shapoor doesn't look to be getting too much joy from the switch. He is still getting good pace and bounce but not much movement in the last over or so.

  329. Sco 31-1 (run-rate: 4.43)

Here comes John Rambo, who is going under the name of Hamid Hassan for this tournament. Right-arm quick, he bustles in and puts the ball in the corridor but when he does err too wide, Kyle Coetzer throws the kitchen sink and benefits from four via a fielding mistake. Of all the men to upset, Rambo would be low on my list of favoured targets. The bowler's mood isn't helped by a glorious straight drive for four next up. Coetzer is looking in good nick.

"It feels like an end-of-summer day in Dunedin, they type you get in late August in the UK. Warm in the sunshine, cool in the shade.

"The University Oval is filling with a steady stream of people still coming in. The grassy banks are busy, the temporary seating less so. From below, there's a chant of 'let's go Scotland' from a young voice, but it's an early struggle for the Scots."

  331. Sco 23-1 (Coetzer 16, Gardiner 1)

There's quite a few Scotland supporters inside the ground for this one. Plenty are sporting tartan, ginger wigs and are armed with bagpipes. What better way to spend your Thursday morning? Dawlat Zadran is bowling some beauties, again he gets the ball to rag from middle to off. You've got to be a very good batsman to get a nick on that. Maiden over.

In the spirit of Rambo-lookalike Hamid Hassan, we're asking for your cricketers who could be Hollywood stunt doubles...

Ashish Amin: Alastair Cook could do a decent Henry Cavill impersonation. Not sure he would look great in superman's tights though.

  333. Sco 23-1 (Coetzer 16, Gardiner 1)

    Kyle Coetzer

The straw-coloured pitch has good pace and carry, and the Afghanistan new-ball bowlers are looking dangerous. Kyle Coetzer, however, is able to be patient and he again pounces on the one bad ball in the over when he clatters four over extra cover.

  334. Sco 18-1 (Coetzer 12, Gardiner 0)

    Dawlat Zadran

Dawlat Zadran is an impressive bowler. He had Calum MacLeod on toast before he eventually got him - one delivery unplayable as it pitched on middle and whistled past off, like an 85mph leg-break. He continues to tear in and bowl at back of a length, nibbling the ball this way and that. Another four for Coetzer comes when he flays a loose ball through point.

  335. Sco 12-1 (Coetzer 6, Gardiner 0)

Afghanistan have got three slips in place as they look to take a few early wickets on this helpful-looking pitch. Kyle Coetzer, rather like he did against England, stays on the back foot and looks to hit the ball into the off side. He pounces on a short and wide delivery and slices it for four. Much more control in that shot than Calum MacLeod's effort.

"There was a bit of width but he hit it straight to the fielder and MacLeod looks extremely disappointed as he walks off. That wasn't a great ball, but he bowled some beauties before in that over and MacLeod thought he could get his innings under way."

  337. WICKET

    MacLeod c N Zadran b D Zadran 0 (Sco 7-1)

Dawlat Zadran (C) of Afghanistan celebrates after dismissing Calum Macleod

A terrible start for Scotland as Calum MacLeod loses his wicket in a sloppy manner - slapping a short, wide effort straight to the fielder at point. Catching practice.

  338. Sco 1-0 (Coetzer 1, Macleod 0)

Shapoor Zadran takes the new ball for Afghanistan. The left-arm seamer runs in from a different postcode - it's easily the longest run-up in this tournament. Apparently he covers 6km in a game - the boy must be as fit as a fiddle. Tall and gangly, he's generating decent bounce and pushing the ball across Scotland's two right-handed openers. Just a single from a mis-field in the opening over.

  348. How's stat?!

    Josh Davey

Here's a few stats to get your teeth into ahead of tonight's match:

    • If Afghanistan win, Scotland will become the first team to lose their first 11 World Cup matches. They are currently tied with Netherlands on 10.
    • In the last ODI between these teams at Abu Dhabi on 14 January, Scotland bowled Afghanistan out for 63 to beat them by 150 runs.
    • In five ODIs against Afghanistan, Josh Davey has scored 157 runs at 52.33 with 2 fifties, and taken 12 wickets at 14.91.
  349. Afghanistan 'ready for Scotland'

Afghanistan all-rounder Mirwais Ashraf, who took 2-29 from eight overs against Sri Lanka, has been ruled out of the tournament with a side strain, so wicketkeeper-batsman Shafiqullah comes into the 15-man squad.

Batsman Javed Ahmadi says Afghanistan have been buoyed by their performance against the Sri Lankans.

"We lost that game, but we learned a lot of things. The last six months, that is what we were practicing for, playing against a full member. So hopefully we will be ready for Scotland," he said.

  350. Line-ups

Ladies and gentlemen, here are your teams:

Afghanistan: Javed Ahmadi, Nawroz Mangal, Asghar Stanikzai, Samiullah Shenwari, Mohammad Nabi, Najibullah Zadran, Afsar Zazai, Gulbadin Naib, Dawlat Zadran, Hamid Hassan, Shapoor Zadran.

Scotland: Calum MacLeod, Kyle Coetzer, Hamish Gardiner, Matt Machan, Preston Mommsen, Richie Berrington, Matthew Cross, Josh Davey, Majid Haq, Alasdair Evans, Iain Wardlaw

  351. Coleman backs the Scotland bowlers

Scotland beat Afghanistan by 150 runs in a pre-World Cup warm-up match in Dubai January, after dismissing their fellow associate side for 63, and Freddie Coleman hopes the Scotland bowlers can put on a repeat performance in Dunedin.

"It's obviously very different conditions to what we faced in the Abu Dhabi game and that was obviously a very successful day for our bowlers," the Scotland batsman said.

"But even there it swung around a bit and nipped around so hopefully we can get the same sort of movement out of this pitch."

  354. Welcome to Dunedin

Scotland and Afghanistan have never won a match at the World Cup, but barring a rain storm at Dunedin, one of the associate sides will put an end to that sorry record tonight.

Both sides have impressed at moments during this World Cup, with Scotland taking seven New Zealand wickets in their defeat to the co-hosts in Dunedin, while Afghanistan caused Sri Lanka a few nervy moments at the same venue before the 1996 world champions prevailed.

The teams have met have met eight times in ODIs, with Afghanistan winning five of them.

  358. Also coming your way

If you're a cricket nut, student or just living in a more conducive time zone... let me remind you we've got two World Cup matches tonight. From 03:30 GMT, Sri Lanka will lock horns with Bangladesh. If the Tigers win that one, it will be panic stations for England.

We will also bring your updates from Lincoln. The New Zealand town, not the English city, where England Women take on the Kiwis in the fourth one-day international. With two games to go, the hosts are leading the series 2-1.

England have won the toss and will bowl first.

  359. Toss

Let's be honest... all cricket live texts are richer for an early picture of Lionel Richie. Now, let me tell you about the toss. Afghanistan won it and will bowl first, captain Mohammad Nabi citing the seam-bowling friendly wicket as the reason why.

  360. Good evening... and welcome to the cricket

    Lionel Richie

To dig up a line from Charles and Eddie in the nineties... Would I lie to you?

Of course not. So, I'm not going to bill Scotland v Afghanistan as the big one.

It doesn't have the glitz of football's Champions League, nor the glamour of the Brit Awards. England v Australia it ain't, Pakistan v India it isn't.

But do you know what... this match matters to these two associate cricket nations. And as we've seen already in this tournament, they have plenty of decent players to set up an intriguing contest.

Would I lie to you? No. So believe me when I say this could turn into a little belter of a match.
