In case you missed it earlier, Afghanistan sealed a historic first World Cup win by beating Scotland by one wicket. But that only tells a fraction of what was a truly dramatic story in Dunedin. With Afghanistan at 144-8 chasing a total of 210, it looked like Scotland were set to record their own first ever World Cup win. However, Samiullah Shenwari's 96 put Andy Moles's team within sight of victory before he was out with 19 still needed. Last man Shapoor Zadran joined Hamid Hassan at the crease and the two saw their team home with three balls to go, with the former hitting the winning runs.

  2. Ban 95-4 (Mahmudullah 24, Shakib 6)published at 09:16 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Mahmudullah burgles another single through mid-on off Herath before Shakib does likewise with a prod to leg. The over ends with another single from a back-foot drive from the right-hander. These two are picking up singles well but they desperately need boundaries.

  3. Ban 92-4 (runs required 241)published at 09:13 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

The overs are ticking by and Bangladesh are not making inroads into that imposing Sri Lankan score. Shakib runs a single down to third man and Mahmudullah chips one to leg for another one but it is nowhere near enough when there's over 240 runs still to get. There is only one way this game is going and it does not end well for the team batting second.

"Herath isn't a big spinner of the ball - he's difficult to get away as he doesn't get many revolutions on the ball, but the odd one will turn and it gets in your head. But that's a great bit of fielding off his own bowling."

  5. Ban 90-4 (Shakib 4, Mahmudullah 21)published at 09:10 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Bangladesh are getting bogged down now. Herath varies his length and his pace to keep Shakib and Mahmudullah guessing and the pair do not have the answers and are only able to claim a single from the over.

  6. Ban 89-4 (Shakib 3, Mahmudullah 21)published at 09:07 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

There are some glum faces on the Bangladesh bench. They have come looking to be positive but have been met with a rejuvenated Sri Lanka side. Perera continues the assault and restricts the Bangladesh batsmen to a trio of singles.

  8. Ban 86-4 (Mahmudullah 20, Shakib 1)published at 09:03 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

After a drinks break, new man Shakib Al Hasan settles in to try and provide some resistance to the Sri Lankan tide. He is an experienced player but he arrives with his team in a dire situation. He gets off the mark with a single, one of two from the Herath over.

"I don't think this is Mahmudullah's fault. He's turned it onto the leg side and the non-striker went sprinting down before being sent back. But Mahmudullah is down on his haunches like the most guilty man in the world, so I can only assume he called 'yes' straight away."

Well, they tried to run themselves out twice in the previous over unsuccessfully, but this time they manage it as Anamul is sent back by his partner after attempting a single but fails to make his ground at the non-striker's end as Mathews' throw takes out middle stump. Madness.

"A wonderful bit of fielding, though he could have thrown it to the bowler's end - it was classic schoolboy running as the batsman middled the ball and ran, while the non-striker was ball-watching."

  12. Ban 84-3 (Mahmuduallah 19, Anamul 29)published at 08:56 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Oh, so close to a run out. There is a huge mix-up between the batsmen after Mahmudullah taps one to cover and is then almost run out at the striker's end from Chandimal's throw. Mahmudullah rubs salt in the wound by charging and slogging a boundary through midwicket. Finally, a second potential run out sees Anamul slide in to beat a direct throw on the stumps. After a little lull, it is all action again.

  13. Ban 76-3 (run-rate 5.42, required 7.13)published at 08:51 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Herath rattles through his second over and it is a very good one as well. Only a flick through midwicket from Anamul for one prevents it being the first maiden of the innings.

Ben Thapa:, external Malinga looks several pounds lighter than the last game he played. Good bit of fitness work!

  15. Ban 75-3 (Mahmudullah 13, Anamul 26)published at 08:49 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Mathews is mixing it up. On comes Thisara Perera to put down some medium pace. It doesn't disrupt the Bangladeshi pair, though, who continue to rotate the strike and patiently construct a partnership.

  17. Ban 69-3 (runs required 264)published at 08:45 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Mathews opts for some spin by introducing Rangana Herath. It is typically tidy stuff, with just a single and a couple of leg byes conceded.

  19. Ban 65-3 (Anamul 21, Mahmudullah 10)published at 08:43 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Lakmal continues and the Bangladesh pair work him around the ground in efficient fashion to add five to their total. It is a very lively atmosphere in the stands. The Bangladesh fans may be watching their side struggle but they are still having fun.

"Mathews just hasn't got his line right, that flicked Mahmudullah's pad and Malinga didn't have a hope at fine leg. Then, it was a terrific chase from Chandimal at point to keep the scoring to two, he moves like lightning."
