"The ball was swinging. But when you're given out, you've got to be real certain that ball is missing. The review was more in hope than anything else. Warner wasn't at his fluent best today."

Disaster for Australia. It is two wickets in two balls. The ball from Tim Southee hits Warner just above the knee, and height may be an issue.

The on-field decision is out, Australia get it reviewed, and the replays show the ball was just about clipping the top of the wicket. Warner is on his way. Two new batsmen for Australia now. Michael Clarke is at one end, Steve Smith at the other.

"He didn't get as much bat on it as he'd have hoped. It's a longer boundary on that side of the ground.

"You still have to hit the ball in the middle of the bat to get it over the ropes square of the wicket. That's a good breakthrough for New Zealand."

Tim Southee has been inconsistent with the ball in his hands, but is involved in his side's second wicket.

Shane Watson is gone for 23, his partnership with David Warner had been worth 50 but it is a good catch at deep midwicket from a diving Southee off Vettori.

  5. Aus 76-1 (Watson 21, Warner 32)published at 01:55 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2015

Tim Southee is back into the attack, this time at a different end to his first three overs, which went for 32. But again it is an uncertain start, with his first ball being a wide.

The rest of the over is a mixed bag. Watson drives it nicely into the covers off the front foot for two, and then adds another two when he works one off the pads past midwicket for two.

  7. Aus 70-1 (Vettori 3-0-9-0)published at 01:49 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2015

Vettori is playing a different game here. While Tim Southee's first three overs went for 32, left-arm spinner Vettori has conceded just nine from his first three. Smart move from captain Brendon McCullum.

Lovely from Warner. Who spins on one leg, and pulls away Trent Boult for four. One of the most visually-pleasing shots of the match so far. He is on 31 off 34 balls.

  12. Aus 62-1 (Watson 10, Warner 30)published at 01:44 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2015

New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori is a master of varying his pace, and is proving tricky for the Australian pair to read. David Warner slumps to one knee, looking to cut Vettori away, and, instead gets it wrong and takes one to the belly.

Warner then has another nervous moment, as his flick just avoids a diving Trent Boult at short third man, who gets fingertips to the ball, but no more. A missed opportunity for the hosts.

"Australia and New Zealand play each other so rarely that they're like two neighbours staring at each other over the garden fence, but no-one invites the other to come and play in the back yard."

This is the first game between the two sides for four years, the Champions Trophy game in 2013 having been washed out.

  14. Aus 57-1 (Watson 8, Warner 27)published at 01:38 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2015

An inside edge from Shane Watson sees him panicking, frantically looking over his shoulder. But he survives.

It is a beautiful day, a packed Eden Park crowd, and it already looks like being a hard-fought, high-quality encounter. Trent Boult continues to impress with a fine spell, although he does get an inswinger wrong, which costs a wide.

New Zealand have done well to stop Australia building any momentum after a bright start. Only six runs off the last two overs.

Tim Southee's three overs were expensive, costing 32. Brendon McCullum brings in Daniel Vettori for some early spin action. And it is a wise move. Five dot balls, and a reserve sweep that goes for two for Warner are the only runs off the over.

It is a good job Trent Boult is keeping it tight. David Warner's heart skips a beat as he flails at one, high through third man area, but luckily there is no one there to catch it. Three singles off the over. Two runs to Warner, one to Watson.
