Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"It must be nice being a South Africa bowler right now. The batsmen put the runs on the board. Turn up, pick up your wickets, stress-free."

  2. Ire 26-3 (target 412)published at 08:14 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

Not seen much of Abbott. Looks a fine bowler. Too good for Balbirnie, who gropes at one outside off stump. Still only three down. For now.

  3. Ire 25-3 (Balbirnie 4, O'Brien 0)published at 08:12 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

Andrew Balbirnie decides the best form of defence is defiance as he clips Steyn for four.

South Africa's 257-run victory over the Windies was the joint-biggest by runs in World Cups, equalling India's win over Bermuda in 2007. The biggest in all ODIs is 290 by the Windies against Ireland in 2008.

    Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"That's the best player gone. Well bowled from Dale Steyn. He bowled a couple of bouncers then a full one, with the seam shaped so the ball went across the batsman. It probably moved half an inch."

  5. WICKETpublished at 08:06 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

Disaster for Ireland. They've lost their top three and we're still in the fifth over. Joyce is the next to go, staying back to full delivery and edging it into the spacious palms of Hashim Amla at first slip. We could be in record ODI defeat territory here.

"It's looking very, very ominous. We could have an early finish here."

  7. WICKETpublished at 08:03 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

Oh dear, another one gone, and John Kenny is already talking about an early finish. Porterfield, three balls after hooking Abbott for four, chips him to short midwicket, where Du Plessis takes a sharp low catch.

    Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"I saw it move. It deviated off his edge. But you might as well stand there with Martinez - he missed an edge off De Kock earlier. Big nick and Stirling knew. He was just exercising his option not to walk."

  9. WICKETpublished at 07:58 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

It was a huge nick and Snicko confirms it. Rising delivery, shaping slightly away from the batsman. A bit of a howler that from umpire Martinez.

  10. Umpire reviewpublished at 07:57 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

Sterling - stocky and powerful - punchy the first two balls of Steyn's over for four. But like all great bowler's Steyn issues a tellnig riposte. Bowler and keeper are up for a caught behind. The umpire says no. This time there is a review...

  11. Appeal - not outpublished at 07:54 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

Abbott swings one into Porterfield's pads. The umpire turns down the appeal. No review. Poor decision from the Proteas. That would have uprooted leg, according to the technology. Two from the over.

  12. Steyn's centurypublished at 07:52 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

    Andrew Samson

  13. Ire 5-0 (target 412)published at 07:51 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

  18. Spinner, streakers and England were right...published at 07:41 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

Monday was a rare rest day in the tournament - the only one in the entire group stage, which is just over halfway through.

A good time, therefore, for Stephan Shemilt - our man down under - to take a look at what we have learned from the first 23 games.

Tantalisingly, it features Chris Gayle, spinners, streakers, why you should bat first in Australia, and most incredibly of all, the notion... were England's tactics right all along?
