  1. Aus 54-1published at 07:18 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

This looks a true wicket, despite Afghan skipper Mohammed Nabi's conjecture at the toss that there might be a bit of green in it for the bowlers. Warner is able to hit clean through the line of the ball when Dawlat serves up a wide one on a full length - don't bother chasing that, that's four all the way.

It's not all orthodoxy from the explosive opener though - he somehow baseball slugs a straight delivery down the ground for two. But there's a more convincing swing of the bat to end the over, Warner freeing his arms and hoicking Dawlat down to long-on. Warner just beginning to motor here, ominous signs for Afghanistan.

"These two are very, very quick between the wickets. They are putting so much pressure on the field with the way they run their first run. It is full of intent in trying to turn ones into twos and twos into threes. What a difference it can make to the thinking of the captain of the fielding team."

  3. Aus 41-1 (Warner 25, Smith 8)published at 07:12 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

Now then, here is the most eye-catching of Afghanistan's seamers - Hamid Hassan, who sports a Rambo-style get-up of warpaint and a bandana and can touch 90mph on the speedo.

Hassan is immediately on the money - he gets one to jag back into Smith off the seam and there's a half-hearted appeal as the ball flicks the batsman's trouser pocket. Warner, who is beginning to look more fluent after a shaky start, picks up three more with a push through the covers. These two can certainly motor between the wickets, and they scamper another three when Warner ends the over with a punchy cover-drive.

"Afghanistan have been impressive. I like their enthusiasm. They do not give up. A lot of teams, against better opposition, drop their shoulders but their body language is very impressive."

  5. Aus 30-1published at 07:06 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

These are fairly long boundaries square of the wicket at the WACA, but the outfield is quick, so we may see a few threes today. Warner gets good value for a gentle push into the vacant point region, which is well-timed enough to almost reach the rope.

Then Smith repeats the trick on the other side of the wicket, timing a clip off his legs sweetly and giving the Afghan fielders another energy-sapping chase in the Perth afternoon sunshine. Another three to the tally.

  6. Pakistan v UAE latestpublished at 07:03 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

25 overs gone in Napier of UAE's pursuit of 340 to win against Pakistan.

A huge task on the Associate nation's hands with them 89-3 in reply. They need more than 10-an-over if they'll pull off a highly unlikely victory.

  7. Aus 24-1 (run rate 4)published at 07:01 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

Have Australia shown this Afghan attack enough respect so far? They may be an Associate side, but they reduced the Sri Lanka top-order to rubble the other day. Just signs that the home side are beginning to slightly moderate their ultra-aggressive shot-a-ball approach, taking just a single from an accurate over by Shapoor.

  8. Aus 23-1published at 06:57 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

Dawlat has made a very impressive start here - he's not afraid to pitch the ball up and get the batsman driving. Warner, who hasn't really made a substantial score yet in this tournament, plays a couple of loose drives with a horizontal bat outside off stump. It's needless really from the opener, as this attack will provide loose balls - as Dawlat proves when he serves one up on leg stump, which Warner clips through square leg for three.

"I am very impressed by this start from Afghanistan. Warner looks like a cat on a hot tin roof. He doesn't look himself. There is pace for the bowlers and they are getting it out."

  10. Aus 19-1 (Warner 12, Smith 0)published at 06:52 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

Steve Smith is the new man. More excitement from the Afghans as Warner ushers one into the gloves of Zazai down the leg side. Some words exchanged as well, it seems, a bit of early niggle out in the middle - what is it about David Warner?

The pugnacious opener executes the perfect riposte when Shapoor again drops short and he unleashes those meaty forearms, pulling him over midwicket for four.

  11. Pakistan v UAE latestpublished at 06:49 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

20 overs gone in the Pool B match in Napier where UAE are replying to Pakistan's 339-6.

It's fair to say there's not a lot of fizz in this chase after UAE were reduced to 25-3 earlier.

But, Shaiman Anwar and Khurram Khan are building a decent partnership for the fourth wicket and have moved things along to 70-3.

"Tremendous bowling. His first over was a beauty. We thought Afghanistan might bat if they win the toss but they gave their bowlers a go on this fresh wicket. It is not often Australia play on a fresh wicket. There was carry and it was comfortably taken at first slip."

It's been a fairly shaky start from Australia's openers and Aaron Finch pays the price for taking one risk too many. Full from Dawlat, just in that corridor of uncertainty outside off-stump, and Finch is suckered into a loose drive, edging to first slip where Nawroz takes a fine tumbling catch.

  14. Aus 14-0 (Finch 4, Warner 8)published at 06:42 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

Warner is not the sort of man to be put off playing the pull stroke by one mistimed shot, and when Shapoor drops short off his first ball, the burly opener swivels on it and dispatches confidently behind square for four.

Shapoor, who has reminded many of Shoaib Akhtar with his long hair and even longer run-up, almost gets early joy when Warner inside-edges one past the stumps. Then Finch prompts another intake of breath on the Australia balcony by driving uppishly through gully for a single. These two are clearly prepared to take their chances in this opening powerplay.

"I was a little bit surprised at Watson dropping out of the Australia side but I think they wanted to give Faulkner a run. Plenty has been said in the press about the inconsistencies of his performances but he has had that throughout his career. Pressure comes on to Faulkner now. It will gives Watson a bit of a shake-up as well."

  16. Aus 4-0published at 06:35 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

Warner and Finch are renowned as one of the more, shall we say, belligerent opening pairs in ODI cricket, and Warner starts as he means to go on by aiming a leaden-footed slash at the first ball of the innings from Dawlat. The Afghan bowlers have acquitted themselves well so far in this tournament and Dawlat is getting a smidgeon of swing from the off.

Warner is off the mark, not entirely convincingly, with a mistimed pull for one. Finch makes a surer start, driving Dawlat confidently for two.

Aaron Finch and David Warner (who look a little like mirror images of each other in the official tournament headshots) are at the crease, and Dawlat Zadran has the ball. Here we go...

Now, Australia will be looking for a win to get their qualification back on track after the frustrations of a washout against Bangladesh and a narrow defeat to trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand. A win today will put them on five points, behind New Zealand and Sri Lanka at the top of Pool A.

Afghanistan will probably have to win all three of their remaining matches if they are to extend the fairytale and make it out of the group. No time like the present…

Thanks Mitch. Morning all. Now, forget Pakistan v UAE - well, no, don't forget it entirely, as we'll still be keeping you abreast of the action in Napier - but consign Pakistan v UAE to one side for the moment as we turn our attention to a real David v Goliath encounter.

When Australia won the last of their four World Cup titles in 2007, Afghanistan were not yet even in the fifth division of the World Cricket League. Now, the two are going head to head in front of 25,000 people at the WACA in Perth. Can the Afghans make it interesting?
