  1. Appeal - not outpublished at 05:48 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

Krishna Chandran - better known as Karate - is in at first drop, Rahat yells an lbw appeal second ball as Karate on-drives and misses, but it hit him above the knee-roll - and most probably pitched a shade outside leg stump.

"Good length delivery, just outside off and moving away and it was a late decision to pull the bat away. As he was leaving, the ball managed to flick the back of the bat. It's certainly not been easy so far for these openers."

Irfan off, fellow left-arm seamer Rahat Ali on, and it's first blood to Rahat in the battle of the Alis as Amjad inside-edges the ball onto the stumps just as he was trying to withdraw the bat at the last minute.

"That's a genuine wide and you cannot play any type of cricket shot to that delivery - barring an overhead smash."

  5. UAE 15-0 (Amjad 12, Berenger 1)published at 05:41 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

Finally the Emirati have a couple of boundaries as a couple of looser deliveries from Sohail are cracked back past the bowler and helped down to fine leg for four on each occasion, while the loosest of the lot flies over the batsman's head for an aerial wide, taken way above his head by the pink-gloved Umar Akmal.

  6. Ouch!published at 05:37 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

More miserly left-arm pace from Irfan, who has gone for only two runs in three overs - and adds injury to insult as Berenger is hit in the unmentionables by the last ball of the over, doubling up in pain.

Over in Perth, chatter on Twitter from the Waca seems to suggest Australia will recall all-rounder James Faulkner to their side following his recovery from injury.

There are reports that Pat Cummins may be sidelined with injury (now there's a novelty) while there is also a suggestion that Mitchell Marsh may miss out, which would leave just the two Mitchells (Starc and Johnson) lining up for Australia today.

  8. UAE 5-0 (Amjad 3, Berenger 1)published at 05:32 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

Berenger is off the mark from his fifth ball, Amjad helps one down the leg side. There's no mistaking Pakistan in their bright fluorescent green kit, though they won't need the floodlights just yet.

"Umar Akmal is wearing fluorescent pink wicketkeeping gloves that have black trim, as if he has taken inspiration from Bret 'the Hitman' Hart. If you're going to wear gloves like that, you'd better not drop anything."

In case you're wondering, he's a wrestler. Hart, that is, not Akmal.

  10. UAE 3-0 (target 340)published at 05:27 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

I hope the Napier weather stays fine as there are a number of families picnicking on the grassy bank at one end. By contrast, the towering Irfan isn't giving the batsmen anything to nibble on - firing in a virtually unplayable bouncer over Amjad's head, though it's not called a wide, before spearing in a yorker at the batsman's feet. Maiden over.

"It's important when you've got such an accurate strike weapon in Irfan bowling at one end that the bowler bowling with him at the other end is also tight and doesn't let any pressure off."

  12. UAE 3-0 (Amjad 2, Berenger 0)published at 05:24 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

While three of Pakistan's four seamers are left-armers, they opt for right-armer Sohail Khan at the other end, and he starts with a legside wide. The UAE will take any run they can - scampering an overthrow when a throw to the stumps hits and rebounds into no man's land while the flashing bails go flying. Sohail is otherwise tidy, and Andri Berenger - also known as Raffaelo, which is the name on the back of his shirt - is yet to open his account.

"You see why Pakistan have employed almost a short leg with the bounce Irfan gets with his height. If that over's anything to go by, 340 has just turned in to 440 and it's going to be very difficult in this early period for UAE."

  14. UAE 1-0 (target 340)published at 05:18 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

The 7ft ins Mohammad Irfan, his fringe threatening to get in his eyes, charges in bowling left-arm over the wicket. He has two slips, a gully and a backward short leg in for left-hander Amjad Ali - and you can see why when Amjad gets off the mark by gloving a lifter over short leg's head for a single.

Umpires are out - Amjad Ali and Andre Berenger are opening for the UAE, and if you can feel the ground shaking all the way from Hawke's Bay, it's because the giant pace bowler Mohammad Irfan is going to to bowl the first over.

How tough will the prospect of facing Australia in Perth be?

Afghanistan coach Andy Moles: "It's going to be worse than tough.

"We're on one of the quickest wickets in the world. All the world's best teams have come here and failed. All I want my boys to do is go there and show some heart, a bit of bravery and a bit of character."

"We just want to give ourselves a great experience and compete."

How do you manage the reaction of the players after that win against Scotland?

Afghanistan coach Andy Moles: "It's a balance. The guys when they won against Scotland were bouncing up and down with joy, but equally I felt for Scotland and told them to win with a bit of humility and let some steam off in the privacy of the dressing room.

"The President did ring us after the game to congratulate us, that's true. He was saying this group of players are getting Afghanistan in the papers for the right reasons.

"At home, it's a wonderfully unifying sport."

As we mentioned earlier, the second game of the day coming up from 06:30 GMT in Perth is the Pool A encounter between Australia and Afghanistan.

Afghanistan coach Andy Moles has been speaking to Kevin Howells.

He was asked what the reaction has been since their famous first World Cup victory against Scotland?

"From a personal point of view, it's great to see all that hard work we've been doing behind-the-scenes in recent months is starting to bear fruition. It's certainly been a great experience and I'm certainly enjoying working with the lads."
