And they're ready to resume in Napier - Dawlat Zadran, one of Afghanistan's three-pronged pace attack, to bowl to Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum. New Zealand need 187 for five wins from five.

"A chant of 'Shenwari, Shenwari, Shenwari' is heard from the Afghanistan fans out on the embankment. They loved the effort their star batsman put in despite the slow nature of it. Even as he departed the Afghanistan flags were being waved proudly, they know things could have been far worse without his half-century.

"The New Zealand fans in contrast breath a sigh of relief, they were starting to get slightly nervous but one young lady remarked: 'At least this way McCullum will be able to smash the ball our way and help a few of us make some money.' Certainly every time New Zealand's captain has come to the crease, he's seemed intent on potentially earning his countrymen and women some of that big pot of money for the 'one-handed crowd catch' promotion."

TMS are now looking ahead to the Australia-Sri Lanka game, which starts at 03:30 GMT:

"It's going to be a grand occasion at the SCG - the winner qualifies for the quarter-finals come what may. You'd think a slower pitch might help Sri Lanka, but I'm sure there will be enough pace in there."

"You're only as good as your last match, and England have had eight days since their last match, when they weren't very good. But beating Bangladesh won't mean they definitely qualify. I just looked on a random forecast for next Friday in Sydney which suggested it could rain when they play Afghanistan."

"I think England have to consider James Tredwell tomorrow, as spinners usually do well against Bangladesh. I think he should have played in the whole tournament - I would say that, I'm an off-spinner - and I'd open with Alex Hales and Moeen Ali, with Ian Bell at three."

  7. Morgan defends England approachpublished at 02:04 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Captain Eoin Morgan has denied that England have been over-reliant on statistics at the World Cup, despite losing three of their first four games.

Former skipper Michael Vaughan has described England as "predictable", while ex-batsman Geoffrey Boycott, who says defeat by Bangladesh on Monday would be "catastrophic", told the players to "think for yourself".

Morgan said: "The majority of plans can go out of the window one or two overs in. That is probably my strength as a captain."

Defeat by Bangladesh in Pool A in Adelaide on Monday will end England's hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.

"The Adelaide Sunday Mail is urging locals to 'roar like a tiger' and cheer for Bangladesh tomorrow. There's even a guide to all you need to know about being a Bangladeshi. Plenty of pressure on England."

    Andrew Samson
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

"The only bowler to bowl a full 10 overs in a 50-over World Cup game and take four or more wickets while conceding fewer than 20 runs before Vettori today was Andrew Hall who had figures of 10-2-18-5 for South Africa v England at Bridgetown in 2007."

New Zealand seamer Trent Boult: "It was pretty tough, the wind was swirling from all angles but credit to Dan Vettori, he led from the front and it's good to chip in with a couple of wickets. It's a used wicket, but I think we adapted well and kept them to a decent total. The ball didn't swing consistently."

Whose fault was it that he and Tim Southee started at the wrong ends?

"I don't like to blame Tim, so I'll say it was a joint decision."

Huge applause from the appreciative Napier crowd for the efforts of the Afghanistan batsmen. At one stage it looked like they were not going to make 86, never mind 186. And their final tally is more than England, Scotland AND Australia each made against the Kiwis....

"An outstanding catch. The batsman advanced down the track and got a good piece of it, baseball-style, but Milne took an excellent catch low down. Worryingly, he just stood up tweaking his shoulder. But a pretty good fightback from an Associate nation."

Hamid Hassan is loving his day in the Napier sun! The crowd are egging him on and the Afghan batsman obliges. He leaps up to meet Milne's short delivery, blasting a square cut to the boundary for another four. A moment of panic in the final ball as Shapoor Zadran wants the single, Hassan doesn't, and sends his mate back to the gate. Calm down lads, only 12 more balls to go...
