"There's a bit of bravado early on when you try to make out you're all right, but I think he's in need of a bit of a rest here. The ice pack comes out, he's probably got a bruise where the helmet made contact with the back of his head, and quite rightly he's taking a bit of time out. The common sense thing would be to come off, though he could only come back at the fall of a wicket."

Leading wicket-taker in the tournament? Pah. Facing Tim Southee does not bother Zadran. The Afghan's eyes light up as a short delivery comes his way, galloping up the ball before spanking one over the boundary at long on. That's a huge six.

Actually, Shenwari does not look in a good way after being hit on the helmet in the last over. He did change helmets in the last change of ends, but he is not happy with something. The batsman sinks to the floor on his knees as the Afghanistan medical staff race out to have a look.

  3. Ouch!published at 00:36 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Shenwari is whacked on the helmet by a vicious Corey Anderson delivery. The Afghan batsmen could not duck out of the way and is thumped on the back of his protection as he turns away.

Anderson ask if he is OK, thankfully Shenwari is and the smiling batsman gives him the thumbs up. Think he might need a new helmet though....

  4. Afg 120-6published at 00:32 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

The Afghanistan batsmen are looking quite comfortable, smartly repelling everything that Tim Southee throws their way. Zadran opens up his bat to prod away for a single, before Shenwari leaps into the air to slash one away to deep point for another.

"It's been a good recovery from these two batsmen as things were looking dire at 59-6, but they've added another 59 now. At first it was all about Zadran having a bit of a heave, but Shenwari has showed good composure. But it could be over pretty quckly if they do break this partnership."

Now the Napier crowd are really starting to enjoy themselves. First, a ripple of applause and a smattering of cheers ring out from the stands as Zadran thumps Corey Anderson's first delivery to third man boundary. That brings up a record seventh-wicket partnership for Afghanistan in one-day internationals. Talk about timely. These two have put on 59 runs.

Then, as a tray full of ice-cold beverages are brought for the scorched players at the end of the over, the Mexican wave is brought out by the smiling spectators. I defy anyone to tell me that climbing to your feet and throwing your hands in the air at a sporting occasion does not make you grin.

"A big cheer goes up around the entire ground as Afghanistan pass the century mark. Plenty feared it wouldn't happen but have been pleasantly surprised by Samiullah Shenwari and Najibullah Zadran's resistance. The majority of people undoubtedly want a New Zealand win but equally they're hoping to be able to enjoy a bit of a chance later on in the afternoon.

"There are a few oohs and aahs as Martin Guptill, one of New Zealand's best fielders, narrowly misses running out Shenwari. But the biggest cheer of the day so far is reserved for Daniel Vettori as he finishes his excellent spell. There are even a few wolf-whistles for the 36-year-old."

Tim Southee is the leading wicket-taker at this World Cup with 13 dismissals - now he is back in the New Zealand attack, looking to add to his already-healthy tally.

Tidy over from Southee, who concedes just the one run when Zadran steers one out to third man. But still no wicket in the Napier sunshine for the Kiwi man.

"McCullum's ploy of bowling out his more attacking bowlers early may leave him a little exposed later on, but he accepts that in the hope of taking wickets. For the remaining 19 overs, he's got three overs each of Southee and Boult and five of Milne, so it's a bit much to expect Anderson to bowl eight of the last 19 - so there may be opportunities for Grant Elliott and Kane Williamson."

Corey Anderson is tossed the ball by New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum. Can the leftie end the resistance of Shenwari and Zadran? Not this time. Anderson gives away a couple of singles, along with a loose delivery which is wider than a large TV...

The crowd are back on their feet again as Daniel Vettori's stint comes to a close. Another tidy half dozen balls from the old fella, who departs with figures of 10-4-18-4. You don't lose it...

"Brilliant fielding from Guptill. The batsman would have been left very red-faced if that had hit the stumps. Guptill's a brilliant fielder anywhere, he was a great second slip in Test cricket but it's almost a waste to have him there as he looks so good fielding in the ring."

  14. Afg 105-6 (Shenwari 29, Najibullah 26)published at 00:09 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

A few whoops and a hearty round of applause as Afghanistan reach their ton. About 20 minutes ago, it was not a given that they would reach three figures. It comes in style as well, Shenwari going on the front foot to pump one past cover.

It is widely accepted that Martin Guptill is one of the world's best fielders - and here he shows us why. The Kiwi quickly drops to the ground to collect the ball as Afghanistan try to nip for a single, then somehow manages to jump to his feet and throw towards the stumps as Shenwari scuttles back. He would have been a goner...

Decent over for Afghanistan is that. These two are finding their rhythm nicely.

  17. Appeal - not outpublished at 00:04 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Appeals from the New Zealand field as wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi scampers to his right to gather. Did Shenwari nick that? Not according to the umpire. Another tidy over from Vettori, who gives away just the quick single when Shenwari clips to the leg side.

  19. Afg 97-6published at 00:01 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Southee thunders down a bouncer in the second ball of the over - a warning to Najibullah that he means business after the Afghan's shenanigans when they last faced off. The bowler manages to rein in the batting pair, who only manage a couple of cheeky singles as the scoreboard ticks towards the three-figure mark.

  20. Afg 95-6 (Shenwari 20*, Najibullah 25*)published at 23:56 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Thanks Mark, hopefully this changeover will be smoother than a GB relay team's baton swap. I must admit, I wasn't sure I would have the opportunity to talk you through any Afghanistan batting action at our scheduled 25-over handover.

Anyway... Daniel Vettori reappears as he attempts to end this mini-Afghan revival. Maiden over from the spinner. As you were.
