What a great compliment from Kumar Sangakarra... it's been a fine effort by Scotland today, they can hold their heads high. They've not been helped by being pitted in the hardest group of the two in this World Cup.

I'm off now, but let me point you in the direction of the BBC cricket online page, which is packed with England content. We have a Chris Jordan interview backing Peter Moores and a video of Michael Vaughan who says Jason Gillespie should take Moores's job.

If you want to keep across rolling sports news this afternoon, let me hand you over to Sportsday live's Steve Canavan and Luke Reddy. Enjoy.

Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara, speaking to BBC's Test Match Special about the associate teams: "Scotland and the other teams have been called minnows, but they have done wonderfully well for the World Cup and for cricket here. Teams like that, with the effort they put in and the colour they have brought, and the joy they have given the spectators and everyone, I think they richly deserve to keep on playing in World Cups."

Sahil Oberoi: More importantly, with that Scotland defeat it is now confirmed that England cannot finish bottom of the group!

Kumar Sangakkara on becoming the first man to hit four consecutive ODI hundreds, and the first man to take 500 ODI dismissals. "Records do matter, I think. I would love to say records never enter my mind, but they do. There are certain things that you chase - you try to keep those goals. They are not the only things you chase, but as long as you do the right things those things will fall into place and come along."

Scotland captain Preston Mommsen: "It was a brilliant wicket so not to go and get a bigger score was slightly disappointing. But today was a huge learning experience, playing against some of the best batters in the world and the way they go about their business, and the calmness of their innings is brilliant to watch and to learn from. It was very difficult and testing for the bowlers on a good batting wicket. so a huge amount of learning has gone on today."

Scotland batted well, especially after losing their talisman Kyle Coetzer from the second delivery of their replay. Preston Mommsen scored a half-century and Freddie Coleman hit his maiden ODI fifty on his way to a classy 70 off 74 balls. He is certainly one for the future.

So, let's recap on the day's play. First of all, Kumar Sangakkara stole the show with 124 as he and Dilshan both scored centuries in a second-wicket stand of 195. From there, Scotland were always behind in the game. Angelo Mathews clubbed 51 off 21 balls with six sixes, while Josh Davey took 3-63. He now has 14 in the tournament, which is more than anyone else. What a fine effort.

Nicholas Cram: Kumar Sangakkara is probably a world-class bowler too, but we'll never know because of his great wicketkeeping!

Joe Simkins: Kumar Sangakkara may just have gone ahead of de Villiers as current player of the tournament. What a man!

Kumar Sangakkara on Angelo Mathews' injury, speaking to BBC's Test Match Special: "He was taking a break and a little rest. It is just precautionary - he had batted 20 balls so he was a little tired! He has had a few niggles throughout, and today his ankle was giving him a lot of pain. It is better to ensure he is all ready and right for the quarter-final."

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews: "The boys played really well and credit should go to Dilshan and Sangakkara, they are getting better and better with age. We have to take one game at a time and play positive cricket. If we can improve our bowling and fielding, it will be great but the batters have posted 300 four times in a row. That is never easy.

"I've been on my knees asking Kumar not to retire but we have to respect his wishes because we are thankful for all the times he has represented the country."

  12. Player reactionpublished at 11:13 Greenwich Mean Time 11 March 2015

Kumar Sangakkara speaking on Test Match Special, on whether he would reconsider his decision to retire from ODI cricket: "No. Retirement is not about form, it is about time and place and whether it feels right. It is never about whether you can play or not."

"Sri Lanka have four key men and some other players who can come in and surprise you. With Sangakkara you think he has so many runs that the world is in danger of running dry. The bowling is a little threadbare beyond Malinga. I am not sure they will stick with the pacey but high-risk Chameera."

  15. Man of the matchpublished at 11:07 Greenwich Mean Time 11 March 2015

Kumar Sangakkara was named man of the match after scoring 124 off 95 balls and taking two catches: "It was a pretty good game, it was important we finished strongly. It's easy to be complacent but the boys were up for a fight and we were better on the day.

"I've been batting and keeping for a long time, it's getting harder and the joints are creaking and aching but I consider myself lucky to be part of a great team. No matter how hard you try, it's hard to pinpoint why I'm playing so well. Maybe I'm making better decisions at the crease, I don't know. Whatever it is, it's working for me at the moment."

"When Scotland look back at the World Cup, they will look at the game against Bangladesh, and the match against Afghanistan, which they really should have won. It has been learning experience but they will be disappointed. They will cling on to the fact that this has been a fantastic experience, but it has been a tough tournament for them as they haven't won a game."

"Sri Lanka showed how to deal with a so-called lesser side, and perhaps a few England should have been watching this. Get runs on the board, lots of them, and then you're not under pressure in the second half of the game."

There we have it then. Scotland certainly didn't let themselves down out there. They should be proud of their fighting spirit.
