  1. Afg 16-0 (Ahmadi 6, Mangal 4)published at 03:54 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

Broad goes a bit too wide outside off and Ahmadi finds the gap between point and cover with a back-foot drive for three runs. The England bowler responds well with five dot balls, including a full outswinger that beats the bat.

"This is a game where you thought Jimmy Anderson might be rested. What's the point in him playing a dead rubber? Steven Finn should be playing. But that shows you how much England want to win today, and how far down the pecking order Finn has gone if he is not trusted against Afghanistan."

  3. Bangladesh v New Zealand updatepublished at 03:51 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

The "other" Anderson, New Zealand's Corey Anderson, has another wicket - Mushfiqur Rahim is caught behind for 15, Mahmudullah is still there on 74 not out, and Bangladesh are 182-5 after 39.2 overs in Hamilton.

  4. Afg 13-0published at 03:50 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

Anderson starts well again, but errs with a leg side wide from his third ball. It is the only run of the over, though. It has been an economical if unspectacular start from England. We've had a couple of edges and some promising swing but no wickets.

  5. Afg 12-0 (Mangal 4, Ahmadi 3)published at 03:46 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

Now it is Broad's turn to cut one through Mangal. Buttler momentarily appears keen on a review, but in his wisdom Morgan opts against it, with replays showing the ball clipped the batsman's trousers on the way through. Broad's last ball is worked to leg for a single to prevent the maiden.

"I've been grumpy in the last couple of days. I was a bit annoyed when Hamid Hassan was put in front of the media and in his second answer he spoke about putting the ball in the right area. Such talk is even afflicting the Afghans now, who should be free spirits."

  7. Afg 11-0published at 03:43 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

Anderson is causing some problems with his swing. He beats Mangal with one that nips away before the batsman edges one down to third man for a single. Ahmadi is then trapped at the striker's end by some decent length stuff from Jimmy.

"I'm annoyed about all these drinks breaks. There is a quick review in the second over of a game and they are trying to bring drinks out. Who has worked up a sweat after 11 balls?"

  9. Afg 10-0 (Mangal 2, Ahmadi 3)published at 03:40 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

It would be fair to say Stuart Broad has not bowled his best this tournament. He doesn't start well here, with a wide, but catches an edge from Mangal next ball and is disappointed to see the ball drop just short of slip. From the penultimate ball, Ahmadi swishes and edges past Chris Jordan at second slip and Afghanistan pick up two runs. There is a hint of a run out at the striker's end but replays show Ahmadi is well in.

Jon Amor: I have an awful lot of time for James Tredwell, a spinner who bowls an old, testing style. Should be a stalwart in this team.

"I'm disappointed with England's progress. It's been predictably predictable. The way the one-day team is set up, it's all come home to roost. Nobody expected England to win the World Cup, but it's the way they have played which is so disappointing. Because the expectation wasn't there, they almost had a free hand to play expansive cricket and entertain."

  12. Afg 6-0published at 03:34 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

Afghanistan get the scoreboard moving first ball, which is steered down to third man for a single. It is clearly doing a bit, though, as Anderson swings a couple away from Mangal, before firing an inswinger right through Mangal, past the diving Buttler and away for four leg byes.

"The modern one-day game has moved forward in light years, it's been so quick. There is no fear, the batsman play all sorts of shots. The public want to watch England play well, we don't expect them to win every tournament, but playing good cricket is everything."

Here come the players for the anthems. The stands are largely empty, the sky is mainly grey; it is a fitting scene. The England players link arms on shoulders in solidarity. Lets hope that show of unity translates onto the pitch.
