Those wearing West Indies shirts in the crowd are wafting their 'four' cards in the Napier air at a regular rate. Left-hander Jonathan Carter sweeps to the boundary and then in the next ball finds the rope again. Twenty twenty vision for Carter - he has 20 runs from 20 balls.

"The Windies have signalled their intentions. They want to get this score as quickly as possible."

Now this is unusual. West Indies decided to take their batting powerplay. At the start of the 12th over. They want to reach this target and they want to reach it quick.

However, the progress of Jonathan Carter and Johnson Charles is slowed down a little. They keep the scoreboard ticking with a couple of singles, not to mention a quick double sandwiched in between, before Carter punches another single.

UAE fielder Nasir Aziz is earning his corn out on the boundary, stretching his legs in successive balls to stop the West Indies adding to their total. But then Aziz - and the rest of the UAE field - is powerless to stop Johnson Charles. He looks in great touch, showing precise timing to drive two boundaries in the space of three balls. The opener moves on to 45 from 27 balls.

The TMS team reckon Jonathan Carter has shades of a certain Brian Lara in his batting technique. He has got a few runs - and a computer game branding his name - to go before reaching that level mind...

However, Carter is lucky to escape in the first ball, Khurram Khan failing to gather a mistimed lob. He recovers to add a few runs before Johnson Charles comes back on strike to wallop another four.

The West Indies fans in Napier are a happy bunch, singing and waving their national flags in the gentle North Island breeze. And they are happy because their team is easing towards their modest target. New batsman Jonathan Carter sets off the mark on his seventh attempt, cracking a lovely drive through mid-off and dashing for three runs.

  7. Windies closing in on last eightpublished at 02:47 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2015

If West Indies reach their target inside 36.2 overs they will effectively secure a place in the quarter-finals - regardless of the Ireland-Pakistan result - because of their superior run-rate. The only outcome that could deny them would be a tie or no-result in that match in Adelaide.

Johnson Charles is only in the team because of Chris Gayle's back injury - but he is making the most of his chance. Charles sends a drive scurrying to the boundary on the final ball of Guruge's latest over to move on to 33 from 20 balls.

"Samuels will be really disappointed with that. Apart from the one big score he's really struggled in this tournament. Even if Windies do go through they have lots of cause for concern."

Ah, scrap what I was saying about Samuels. He hasn't looked convincing at all, perfectly illustrated by the shot which signals his exit. The West Indian batsman lazily prods at a teaser outside of off-stump - straight into the hands of Berenger, who juggles the ball and eventually holds at point.

Johnson Charles does not look in the mood for hanging around - and the West Indies opener is now being helped by Marlon Samuels. Samuels appears to have woken up, cracking one through cover and - with the help of a misfield - nabbing three runs.

UAE bowler Guruge is targeting Marlon Samuels down the off-side. Samuels does not look convincing, fending at these deliveries tentatively, before scampering off strike with a single. And Johnson Charles gets some revenge on behalf of his partner, smashing a six on the final ball of the over. Have that.

A huge appeal from the UAE players. They think Naveed has trapped Johnson Charles lbw, but the umpire thinks otherwise. Are they considering an appeal? No. The wicketkeeper is not convinced, thinking it would have gone down the leg-side. Tight.

Left-armer Manjula Guruge is bowling line and length as newcomer Marlon Samuels stares back at him from down the wicket. The UAE bowler watches another delivery whistle past the batsman's defence, but also past the stumps. An excellent over ends in a wicket maiden.

"I think Smith is just disappointed as he walks off because he has failed once again at this tournament. The bowler didn't appeal, but the rest of the team went up."

Dwayne Smith's rotten run at this World Cup continues - and it is a shocker. The West Indian opener lashes out at the delivery, nicking the slightest of slight inside edges which goes through to the wicketkeeper. And his innings started out with such promise...

Nasir Aziz continues with his off spin - and continues to get whacked all over Napier. Dwayne Smith's eyes light up as pounces on some loose deliveries to whack not one, not two, but three boundaries in an over which yields 12 runs.

Mohammad Naveed doesn't start well at the opposite end, the medium pacer conceding another eight from his first six deliveries. He pitches a couple short, which are picked off by Dwayne Smith and Johnson Charles. Smith smacks one through the covers for three, then Charles finds the rope again with a pull.

Here's a sign of the West Indies' intent. They knock off 11 in the first over against the spin of Nasir Aziz - an interesting choice of opening bowler. Johnson Charles - in for the injured Chris Gayle - goes big from the off, following a hefty four with a whopping six. Great start.
