Mally Graveson: Classic England. Amazing session, then a collapse, then a bit of Jimmy.

After England sent in a (non-facing) nightwatchman last night, a decision which didn't entirely please a few of you, I mischievously wonder if any batting team might consider pushing out a sacrificial "lunch watchman" in these circumstances?

"West Indies have bowled well. The dismissal of Stokes early was crucial. Jos Buttler hasn't had a lot of batting, his mind still has to be on the World Cup. Stuart Broad just looks like a walking wicket - he arrived at the crease and he mirrored the sway and the duck. That tells me he's so concerned about the short ball."

Bowling coach Sir Curtly Ambrose, who fired up West Indies before play today with a passionate speech full of fist-pumping, fire and brimstone, is quick to applaud his players off - they have taken five wickets for 58 runs today.

It's now over to the Caribbean batsmen, who will have to face about 10 minutes of batting before lunch is taken at 17:00 BST.

"Spin does the trick. The ball just stopped in the surface somewhat, and it was a simple catch. But Jimmy Anderson has just a bit of the momentum of the game swinging back in England's favour. It's all about Jimmy getting the ball in his hands though."

Anderson punches off-spinner Marlon Samuels for four through the covers but England fall one short of 400 as he pops a catch to short cover to end an entertaining last-wicket stand of 38.

Phil Smith: Reckon Brendon McCullum might have declared at eight down in this situation - get Jimmy bowling!

  9. Eng 394-9 (Jordan 20*, Anderson 16*)published at 16:37 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

Anderson misses with another attempted uppercut over the slips - captain Denesh Ramdin responds by sending one of his slips down to third man, a fielding position the Windies skipper seemed strangely reluctant to utilise yesterday. This stand is worth 33 - the third highest of the innings behind 177 (Bell/Root) and 130 (Bell/Stokes).

  11. Eng 394-9published at 16:34 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

Roach takes a rest with figures of 4-94 from 29 overs, and Jerome Taylor returns as West Indies look to prise apart this last-wicket stand. Anderson responds by batting like an old-school style tail-ender, giving Taylor the charge and slogging him for four wide of mid-on, and giving the elderly legs of Shivnarine Chanderpaul some work as the 40-year-old from Guyana gives chase. Taylor responds with a bouncer, Anderson ducks it at the last minute and the bowler gives him a "look".

  13. Eng 390-9published at 16:31 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

Holder tests Jordan with a bouncer which is signalled as an aerial wide - while the Sussex man also threads his fourth four through the covers.

And something I hadn't picked up on earlier - the Decision Review System for this Test does not include HotSpot or Snicko. A little strange that the DRS these days seems to be a pick'n'mix where some elements of it are used in some series but not others - while it's still not used at all in bilateral series involving India. Because they don't like it.

Naveed Afzal: Sorry but Stuart Broad 'mentally' has gone. He's petrified of the short ball and I hate to imagine what Johnson/Starc will do.

Tom Watts: Stuart Broad looks a shell of the batsman who once scored 169 in a Test match.

  15. Eng 385-9 (Jordan 16*, Anderson 12*)published at 16:26 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

Roach is not the tallest of West Indies' fast bowlers, but on the other hand, as Tony Cozier points out on TMS, neither was the great Malcolm Marshall. Jordan cracks one back towards the bowler - Jimmy Anderson has to spread his legs to let it go through - and they run three. Next ball, Anderson carves another four through point, and there's a moral victory of sorts for the batsman as the fleet-footed Jermaine Blackwood is asked to stay out on the point boundary after he throws the ball back in.

"This England innings was going along so swimmingly last night, Ian Bell and Ben Stokes were smashing it everywhere. But that one bit of magic by Kemar Roach, producing an absolute pearler to get rid of Bell, has got West Indies back in this Test match. England have batted very defensively this morning, and they've lost a lot of wickets."

  17. Eng 378-9published at 16:22 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

If England would have bitten one's hand off for a close-of-play score of 341-5 after being 34-3, West Indies would have rushed to grab it if you'd offered them 378-9 from 341-5. Holder's line and length has been good today - he sends down a maiden to Anderson.

Richard McConnell in Glasgow: A lot of people questioning the use of a nightwatchman, which is baffling. Supposing Buttler had gone in last night, and got an absolute beaut from Roach in the last over, we would be six down and fans would be asking where the nightwatchman was.

It's a classic case of "you're damned if you do, you're damned if you don't". This is standard form for most Test teams and it does not demonstrate the team's negative streak. Move on, please.

Roach to continue, and after England lost two wickets on 357 and two on 361, the runs are flowing a little better for England now as Jordan - who played an ODI on this ground a year ago, but didn't bat - swivel-pulls Roach for four, and then flicks a looser delivery for four more through square leg.
