West Indies rotate their three seamers as Roach replaces Taylor at the Sir Curtly Ambrose End to bowl the 100th over. Their bowling was rather wild and woolly with the second new ball last night, but West Indies' approach has been right on the money today. Perhaps Sir Curtly could be loaned to England for the occasional pep-talk like he gave the Windies beforehand? Buttler plays out England's fifth successive maiden.

It's two Bajans locking horns in Antigua as Jason Holder bowls to former Barbados team-mate Chris Jordan, who's come out at number nine for the tourists. A wicket maiden - that's four maidens on the trot.

"West Indies have stuck to their line, it's been consistent in that area of uncertainty for the batsmen. I've been very much impressed with Darren Bravo's catching - I've seen him spill a few in his time, but he must have done some work."

Tredwell drives at Holder and edges to first slip where Darren Bravo takes his third catch of the innings. 357 is clearly the new 111. The Kent nightwatchman departs - and now his watch is ended.

"Stokes will be annoyed with himself. He was batting so well, yesterday he was timing the ball perfectly. He'll be disappointed with the dinky shot he played, it was a nothing sort of shot."

  9. Eng 357-6published at 15:35 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

England are becalmed on 357, it's the second morning of the Test but it suddenly feels like the first. Not much movement for the bowlers but Buttler plays out another maiden from Taylor.

"You fell it's a matter of attitude with the West Indies players. Self-belief is what they lack. They have a pretty disastrous record in recent years, which hangs over them. But look at what Brendon McCullum has done with New Zealand: a couple of years ago they were level with West Indies, but now they've completely turned around - they're aggressive, they believe they can win."

As Aggers suggested might happen, West Indies have introduced young Jason Holder - the ODI captain, remember, but back in the ranks for Test cricket - in place of Roach. The tall Bajan goes round the wicket to the left-handed Tredwell, who sees out the second successive maiden.

"I like Jerome Taylor. He's got some pace, he's skiddy, he bowls a lovely line when he gets it right. His record isn't exactly sparkling, but I think in a better side he'd do better. He's better than his average of 35 suggests."

Wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, nearly a year after he displaced Matt Prior behind the Test timbers, nearly gives Taylor a fourth wicket when he prods and misses at his first ball, with his feet stuck in concrete. Taylor completes a wicket maiden.

"Stokes played one like that on to the floor moments ago, and he's played this more or less the same, only in the air. He likes to play the ball inside-out through the gully area, not through point, he plays it a little finer. It was a neat catch by Holder."

West Indies have their first wicket of the day as Stokes, attempting to angle the ball to third man with another dab, is caught at gully by the tall Jason Holder. Like Joe Root yesterday, he's perished within 20 or so of a century in fairly benign batting conditions. Send for the Buttler!

  17. Eng 357-5published at 15:20 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

Geoffrey Boycott on TMS is convinced Roach is down on pace here - while Aggers feels West Indies could have opened with the lanky Jason Holder instead today. Two singles mean England have added 16 in five overs today. At what point do they put the hammer down?

Agent Giuseppe: Only logic I can see for putting Tredwell in is to use up what's left of the new ball so Buttler can play some shots?

  19. Eng 355-5 (Stokes 78*, Tredwell 7*)published at 15:17 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

Tredwell wafts and misses against Taylor, who's slanting the ball across the left-hander with two slips and a gully in attendance. Tredwell's bat is splattered with red - he's either knocked the leather off a number of red cricket balls, or he's been moonlighting in an abattoir between matches - and he jabs a two and a single to move to seven from 12 balls, temporarily taking his lifetime Test average to 44.
