"Your best bowlers find a bit extra when you need it. They can't always do it - they couldn't in the last Test match - but they have here. James Anderson really bent his back to get wickets this morning."

Marlon Samuels replaces Devendra Bishoo as the spin option. Short leg has been removed, much to the relief of sub fielder Shai Hope and his dentist - the ball was coming at him at head height for a while there. Cook plays the latest of cuts, tickling Samuels down to the third man boundary for four.

"The West Indies players have got to make an effort. That's been a problem that as soon as things go against them it shows and their shoulders slump."

Thank you Stephan. Watching Alastair Cook advance towards this target is like watching a tractor driving down a single-track country road: it's slow, it's not stylish, sometimes you wish it would just hurry up a bit so we could all get to the pub quicker, but my god, come hell or high water it's going to keep plodding on towards its destination. The captain, in no rush whatsoever, plays out a maiden from Shannon Gabriel.

Alex Ewing: Great to see Cook finally getting some runs. Great role model, showing how self belief, perseverance and hard work pays off.

Bishoo's cock-wristed leg-breaks, landing on the stumps and spinning towards these batsmen. Bit of encouragement from behind the bat, plenty of noise from the band. Ooofff, that's a bad un, a long hop, only pulled for one by Cook. And a full toss, swept for four by Ballance. England moving ever so slightly quicker. Here's James Gheerbrant to see you to the end of the match.

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"Alastair Cook is tone deaf. He's an awful singer. Whether once your voice breaks it's completely different I don't know, but he can't sing for toffee. He can still play the saxophone but he refuses to sing now.

"It's between Stuart Broad and Cookie for the worst singer in the team. Not that any of us was much better but we weren't scholars when we were younger."

The Windies have to stick with Roach. With Jason Holder off the pitch, the only options are Shannon Gabriel and Marlon Samuels. Roach actually improves, his off-stump line keeping Alastair Cook watchful. I say keeping Cook watchful, but Cook is seldom anything else. A maiden.

"England are going along nicely. Cook is looking confident and Ballance is playing his way. He's playing it straight, late and great."

Cook again on the sweep to Bishoo, some very good work done at short fine leg prevents a boundary. I'll be honest, there isn't a great deal happening. The threat with the ball is minimal, the chase conservative. Still, England can very please with the day they've had. They won't mind how long the pursuit takes, so long as it is completed.

Tom Seebold: (Re: 20:21) Surely Notting Hill Carnival was lifted straight from Grenada, rather than the opposite!

  12. Eng 73-1 (70 to win)published at 20:28 British Summer Time 25 April 2015

Give credit to the Windies, they aren't throwing the towel in. Their fielding since tea has been good, with another athletic stop preventing a Cook cut shot reaching the boundary. Having said that, Kemar Roach is dropping short all too often, allowing Ballance another cut shot for a couple. England just about keeping on top of the required rate...

I'm hearing that Jason Holder has ligament damage to his ankle, but isn't definitely out of the third Test. I once did my ankle falling down the stairs at my mum's house. I wanted to cry. Cook gets away with a top-edge sweep that lands beyond short fin leg, with Bishoo again over-stepping. Please, please, please tell me how a leg-spinner bowls front-foot no-balls. Baffling.

Just a mention for Radio 5 live sports extra on Sunday. They will have live commentary from 10:55 BST on Yorkshire v Warwickshire, while commentary from all the other County Championship games will be online and the BBC Sport app.

Kemar Roach to take up the post-tea attack, shuffling in from round the wicket. Off-stump line to Ballance, who is happy to wait for a short ball that he steers behind square for a couple. You feel this pair will nudge, rather than sprint towards the target. They musn't have plans for this evening. If England do celebrate in Grenada, they won't be short of music. This whole Test has been played to a band lifted straight from Notting Hill Carnival.

Devendra Bishoo with the ball, three men huddled around Alastair Cook's bat. With the ball turning into this pair of left-handers, the leg-side is packed. Slightly gloomy, or, at least, a lack of sunshine, as Cook looks to show some intent. Clips, sweeps and swipes, but the ball not going very far. A no-ball (criminal from a spinner), is the only run from the set.

The players are back out for the final session of the match, Gary Ballance striding ahead of Alastair Cook. England need 78 runs for a 1-0 lead and a first overseas win since 2012.

"I wouldn't be surprised if England have a look at Adam Lyth in Barbados. Jonathan Trott isn't an opening batsman, it's been harsh to ask him to do that."

Another look at the shot Jonathan Trott played does it no favours, either.

Just looking at some replays of that Jason Holder injury. Like Geoffrey said, he'll be OK, but seeing someone roll their ankle just makes me feel a bit funny.
