Alastair Cook at his best has such a placid temperament at the crease: he blocks and blocks and when Roach gets a little straight he simply flicks him down to fine leg with the entirely untroubled ease of a grazing heifer flicking away a pesky fly with its tail.

England are going nicely here, and Cook has now surpassed the Test runs tally of the great Viv Richards. Some achievement that.

"Holder has hurt himself badly. Everyone was watching the pull shot. I didn't see what happened, but he's gone down and hardly moved. The umpire was straight over him. He fell on the base of his spine, which isn't good. It was a heavy fall and didn't look good.

"He'll be OK, because it's not life-threatening. Whether he'll be OK to play in the next Test is a different matter."

This isn't what anyone wants to see - Gary Ballance cracks Jason Holder to the midwicket boundary and the bowler crumples to the turf in his follow-through with an audible yelp. He looks in real distress, and a replay reveals the reason why - he seemed to turn an ankle in one of the footholes and come down with his full weight on it.

Holder is having lengthy treatment, and unfortunately it looks as though the stretcher has been summoned to ferry him from the pitch,. Let's hope he's not too badly injured. Amidst all that, scarcely noticed, there was a dropped catch - the ball bursting Marlon Samuels' hands at short midwicket as it cracked off Ballance's bat.

Alastair Cook looks in nice touch here - when Gabriel strays a bit leg-sidish, the skipper simply flicks him off his toes down to the fine leg boundary.

Rick Sanderson: Is it not a slightly odd decision to take a player who is coming back from a stress related illness and play him, not only in an unfamiliar role, but perhaps the most stressful position in the batting line up? No wonder Michael Vaughan describes him as looking a bit panicky in all four innings!

  7. Eng 20-1published at 19:10 British Summer Time 25 April 2015

Young Jason Holder, taller and skinnier than the other West Indian seamers, is into the attack. He really announced himself with a starring performance in the first Test, but he's come back down to earth with a bump in Grenada - no wickets so far in the match and just 24 runs. Cook pulls him through midwicket serenely for four.

Andy: I have to preach in the Methodist Church in St Georges, Grenada tomorrow morning. As an England fan how many cricketing illustrations would it be right and proper to use in my message to the congregation?

Shannon Gabriel, a rivulet of perspiration inching down his forehead, gets Gary Ballance swaying with a couple of effortful short balls. Ballance, eschewing any unnecessary risks, plays out a maiden.

Thomas Hammond: I think all England fans want Trott to come back and succeed. But on the evidence we've seen, surely Lyth gets a chance?

Mark: Regardless of result of this game I would change Lyth for Trott & Rashid for either Stokes or Jordan.

Paul Roberts: I think it's fair to say that the all too conservative Trott experiment has failed.

West Indies can't let up here - they need to keep taking wickets to keep themselves in this match. One good England partnership and this game is as good as over. Cook continues to eat away at the meagre total with a punchy four through the covers.

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"If England desperately want Trott in the side then they might switch him and Ballance. I wouldn't do that, though. Going from opening to three is a nice one. I did it because of the captaincy, to have some time between fielding and going out to bat. I hated batting four. But, going from three to two is different. It's a different mentality."

What will Adam Lyth be thinking up on the England balcony? Could his time be about to come? Ballance clips two to long leg.

Darren Davies: Terrible attempt by Trott! No confidence at all! I wouldn't play him in third Test!

Neil Peter: Adam Lyth get ready for next week.

Paul Barker: Trott is not an opening batsman. If he is to continue for England surely he should be at 3 or 4.

  15. Eng 7-1published at 18:51 British Summer Time 25 April 2015

Don't panic yet, England fans - plenty of batting to come on that card, much of it of the 'bang in form' variety. Still, not the start that England wanted. This match has had more drag-ons than a Chinese New Year's parade. Cook adds two with a cut past point.

"I was all for Trott coming back in. I thought risking him at the top of the order was worth it. But, after seeing four innings, he's not an opener. He has to bat in the middle order and, if that spot isn't available, he has to wait. People say the difference between three and opening is a small step, but it's totally different. For him, it seems he would be better off going where he has batted all his career."

Gary Ballance is the new man, he's off the mark with a single to mid-off. What a reassuring sight the Yorkshire number three has become for England fans in his short Test career - although, if we're being picky, we'd prefer not to see him quite so early as we have been.

"It's another drag-on on this wicket. You have to say that Trott's foot movement and head were all over the place in those three balls. I don't know what it is with him at the start of the innings, but it looks like he's panicking. You have to be in a controlled state, trust your game. He was all over the place."

Gone this time! Trott tries to cut one too close to his body and gets the fatal under-edge. Timbers everywhere, not the first time we've seen that mode of dismissal in this match. Jonathan Trott's unconvincing return to Test cricket continues, West Indies have a lifeline.

"That's not a good sign for Jonathan Trott. He was trying to play that to fine leg when he should have been playing straight down the wicket."
