"A snaffle down the leg side. Maybe that is just that bit of luck England need? And now here comes the firecracker McCullum. Sit back and strap yourself in."

  2. WICKETpublished at 11:38 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

He might look back on that catch with fondness, though! Brilliant from Jos Buttler, diving full length to his left to take a superb one-handed catch when Taylor gloves Broad down the leg side. Big wicket for England.

"If you watch the way Williamson plays a forward defensive he has the bat angled at about 45 degrees. I think if you study his batting he is playing the percentages game where if the ball hits the outside edge the ball may go into the dirt instead of to slip because of that angle."

  4. NZ 337-2published at 11:35 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Wicketkeepers never enjoy playing at Lord's and you suspect this won't be a Test that Jos Buttler will look back on with much fondness. Once again he watches the ball go flying past him, this time from a Jimmy Anderson bouncer that trampolines off a length and rises miles over his head. Williamson piles on the pain with another dab down to the third man boundary. Will Alastair Cook blink and put a man down there?

"If Broad can continue to move it form the surface that will make the batsmen uncertain. For the first time this morning we saw Williamson's footwork being diffident as he waited for the ball to come to him."

  6. NZ 327-2 (Broad 18-3-47-1)published at 11:31 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Jaffa from Broad, pitching on a fourth-stump line and just nipping back to beat the bat of Williamson. And there's another close call as Williamson is just shaken from his cocoon of concentration by a wide one that keeps low, and is lucky not to find the edge with his swish. Decent bowling this from England.

  7. The rise of Kane Williamsonpublished at 11:27 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Kane Williamson scored a century in his very first Test innings (against India in Ahmedabad in November 2010). This was one of three tons he scored in his first 25 Tests. In his 26th Test, in October 2013, he scored 114 and 74 against Bangladesh in Chittagong and, since then, with his first-innings effort one of seven centuries in his last 15 matches.

    His last six scores: 192, 54, 31*, 69, 242 and 102*.

  8. NZ 327-2 (Williamson 102, Taylor 61)published at 11:26 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Ooh, dicey moments for Ross Taylor, struck on the thigh by Jimmy Anderson and just alert enough to swivel round and prevent the ball from trickling back on to his stumps. We've seen that happen many times. Maiden over from Anderson, who has found a probing line this morning.

"Saving runs at this stage is not the issue for England. They need to have people where the catches are likely to go."

  10. NZ 327-2published at 11:21 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Three slips for Stuart Broad, who bowled with good pace and aggression yesterday despite a modest return. Clever shot by Taylor, just rolling his wrists late to divert one round the corner to the fine-leg boundary. Runs flowing for New Zealand this morning, hands on hips and skyward glances from Alastair Cook in the cordon.

Jeffrey Wiltshire: New Zealand have not lost a test match where Kane Williamson has scored a hundred #omen.

Gordon Thursfield: Kane Williamson looks pretty able to me. Top player, good technique. (if that doesn't get him out nothing will).

"This was a slightly dispirited way that Anderson took his sweater from the umpire. There maybe wasn't as much movement there as he was hoping for. If England don't take wickets in the next 10-15 overs then, on a flat and benign surface, it will be a hard, long day unless New Zealand make errors themselves."

  14. New ball takenpublished at 11:16 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

What's red and round and could dictate the course of this Test match? If you answered 'the planet Mars', you may be investing a little too much faith in this morning's horoscopes.

The answer is of course, the new ball, and it's now in the hands of Jimmy Anderson. Crucial phase of the game this. Not an auspicious beginning for England's all-time leading wicket-taker though, beautifully square-driven to the point boundary by Taylor. There does look to be a bit of movement on offer for Anderson though, as you'd expect under slightly overcast skies.

STONEY: Alistair Cook's inept skippering has let NZ get out the blocks straight away this morning with easy runs.

Jack of all trades: Another bad start by Cook, should have started with one of the quicks and tried "wake up" the batsmen, wasted with the spinner.

  16. NZ 315-2 (Williamson 100, Taylor 51)published at 11:11 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Some news to bring you - we're hearing that BJ Watling, the New Zealand wicket-keeper who injured his knee in England's first innings, will be OK to bat at number seven as usual. England will hope to be seeing him sooner rather than later. Taylor knocks a single to cover.

  17. 50 for Taylorpublished at 11:08 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

And the very next ball sees another raise of a Kiwi bat, Ross Taylor reaching his fifty with a single off his hips. He hasn't quite found the same fluency as Williamson, but he's played a very solid supporting innings.

"I think in the first 10 or 11 Tests Williamson has averaged around 30 but since then he has averaged about 80. That may be, in part, due to the finishing school of Gloucester and Yorkshire."

  19. 100 for Williamsonpublished at 11:06 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Plenty of players have fallen within sight of a century in this match, but Kane Williamson just has too much class to miss out on a surface like this. He's looked utterly at ease and he brings up his tenth Test century with a guided three to third man off Jimmy Anderson. Classy knock.

  20. NZ 310-2 (Williamson 97, Taylor 49)published at 11:02 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Williamson gets off the mark straight away, reaching out and pushing a two into the covers. And he pinches two more off the second ball, steering Moeen to third man. A fluent start, just what you want when you're resuming on 92. He then bunts a single to mid on, and in the blink of an eye, he's moved to within three of his century.
