"We didn't bowl well to the tailenders. When did you last see a yorker bowled? They all seem to have those slower balls they bowl in one-day cricket but I didn't see one slower ball bowled by England."

More from England captain Alastair Cook on TMS: "Even when we did pitch it up, they hit us over our head. It was a tough situation to bowl in. Credit to the way New Zealand played in this second innings, we had chances in both these games."

"We've got a middle order, starting with Root, who's had a good year, and Stokes, Buttler, Moeen - these people are expressive, they play in the same way as New Zealand. I think Alastair Cook could go to them and let them express themselves, encourage them to go forward. They are strokemakers after all."

England captain Alastair Cook on TMS: "It's been a thoroughly enjoyable Test series, the spirit from both teams has been fantastic. The ball was turning, and that four-wicket burst really hurt us.

"Adam Lyth has looked a really good player - credit to him for scoring his first hundred. He's got a pretty sound technique and this will be a game he will always remember. It was disappointing for me to miss a straight one from Kane, but overall I'm feeling I'm moving quite well."

"New Zealand played beautifully. The sad thing is there isn't a third Test match. You'd hope the new hierarchy at the ECB would look at that. I know they want five Tests against Australia, but a two-match series is silly. We want three."

More from England interim coach Paul Farbrace on TMS: "Adam Lyth played really well. I thought at Lord's he looked the part, and even in the Caribbean he showed around the squad that he can handle international cricket. Alastair Cook has played with real control and looks very balanced and that bodes well for the rest of the summer.

"Ballance and Bell need runs before Cardiff - there's no hiding from that - but that's not through lack of effort or commitment. Let's hope there are runs around the corner, because they are two quality players."

  8. Man of the matchpublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

The man-of-the-match award goes to New Zealand batsman BJ Watling for his superlative second-innings 120.

More from England interim coach Paul Farbrace on TMS: "New Zealand's catching was excellent, ours was disappointing. We can't have to keep creating 13 or 14 chances every innings. We're going to learn from every series, learn very quickly and rectify some of the mistakes we've made over the last five days.

"We didn't bowl enough balls to hit the top of off stump, but perhaps we haven't been backing Jimmy and Broady up well enough."

England interim coach Paul Farbrace on BBC TMS: "It is disappointing. We obviously wanted to win this series. But New Zealand thoroughly deserved to win this game. The positive way they play, the way they punished our bowlers and put them under pressure is something we need to take from the way they play. Their bowlers were very disciplined and put our batters under pressure. They've put us under more pressure than we put them under."

"Ian Bell has got to do what Alastair Cook has done. He has a lack of confidence for a really high-class player. He's got to get his mind back and arrive at Cardiff calm, knowing that he's done everything he possibly can. He's falling for the opposition trap at the moment. He shouldn't be in the one-day team, I think England need to move on there - and I don't think Ballance should be in the one-day team for now, too."

"There are many areas you'd like to have operating better, but I'm not sure how much they can change. I don't think changes of personnel would solve anything. Gary Ballance has had a rough little run, but I don't think you take him out of the side: that's a backward step."

"The way that New Zealand play, they put you under pressure in every single session. The bowling matches the batting in aggression. If you look at the 10 days of cricket, New Zealand have won seven and a half. I think if we played a third Test, New Zealand would go on to win."
