"These New Zealanders will be used to the wind. I remember bowling at Palmerston North once, where all you could do is bowl it as far as you can, and that would approximate a length."

  2. Eng 202-8 (Craig 28-12-63-2)published at 15:39 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

Buttler decides that he might as well have a swing and dispatches Craig over the mid-wicket boundary for a maximum.

Andrew in York: Their bowlers are visibly more hostile and dangerous. Their batters are far more destructive yet secure. I do not know how a team with far less population and resources is easily better than ours. Same in Rugby, any ideas?

  4. Eng 193-8 (min 37 overs left)published at 15:36 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

Mark Wood is the new batsman and he punches his first ball, a full toss, down the ground for four.

"That's a slightly quicker ball which skidded, kept low, and got the under-edge onto the stumps. I'd expect McCullum will take him off now, he's done so after the first two wickets! Eight down, welcome to Mark Wood."

Did I say Williamson's golden arm was losing its lustre? Scratch that, it's looking shinier than ever. Broad tries to force a shortish delivery through the off side but it's too close for the shot and he chops it onto the stumps. Williamson celebrates with a slightly sheepish grin.

  7. Eng 188-7 (Buttler 32, Broad 23)published at 15:31 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

Trent Boult, the spiky-haired assassin, is recalled to the attack. His first delivery almost has Luke Ronchi's dentist in business, bouncing low and awkwardly and forcing the keeper into evasive action. Four byes result. He switches to round the wicket and the change of angle brings a play and miss from Buttler.

Phil, Rugby: At least Moeen's dismissal seems to have deflected some of the flak away from Ian Bell! Not sure why Belly always seems to be made the scapegoat when England perform badly… look at his record, it stands up pretty well!

Dan Williams, Milton Keynes: How many games will Ian Bell get before he is dropped? Bell seems to have a series of poor scores before getting a hundred to save his place. There are plenty of players waiting for an opportunity (James Taylor) who have to watch their careers ebb away because a centrally contracted player is more or less guaranteed their place. Central contracts are good up to a point but the England team seems like a closed shop to promising players.

  9. Eng 183-7 (Williamson 5-1-6-2)published at 15:27 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

Williamson's golden arm has just lost some its lustre in the spell. He's not looking so threatening and is milked for a couple of singles by Buttler and Broad.

"Three boundaries in the over. The second one was a lovely shot from Broad, he's stayed on the back foot and hit through the line. The ball was fractionally short of a length, but he timed it beautifully. The last one was a bit of a heave, but off the meat of the bat. On a miserable day for England, one of the glimmers is that Broad looks to be getting his batting back."

  11. Eng 181-7 (min 40 overs remaining)published at 15:24 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

Henry has bowled a really good, tight spell here, but he's just beginning to flag. Broad is beginning to find his range and he takes the bowler for three fours, gliding him down to third man, punching him off the back foot and then smearing him over square leg.

"This Kane Williamson, he hasn't got much stamina, has he? He's coming in for a third spell, and he has figures of 3-1-3-2! McCullum must enjoy being able to pop him on, take a wicket and then say 'thank you Kane, that will do nicely'."

  13. Eng 168-7 (Buttler 30, Broad 9)published at 15:19 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

Kane Williamson, sandy-haired destroyer of English dreams, is back into the attack. Buttler nudges a single into the covers before Broad resumes his uncharacteristic blockathon.

Chris in NL, (hiding in an all day meeting): Whatever the result today, this has been a great advert for Test cricket. I would have bitten your arm off to have seen this many runs in 10 days of cricket, and I think a drawn series is a fair result. For all those negative people about England, let's give some respect to the Kiwis who have played some great cricket. England are not the best team in the world, but we are improving.

  15. Eng 167-7 (Henry 9-2-27-1)published at 15:17 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

Matt Henry is coming at Stuart Broad with everything he's got: getting him ducking with a steepling bouncer and then firing in a toe-crunching yorker which Broad does well to jam the bat down on. Stout defence from the tailender.

Alice Stainer: As a fan of cricket, not just England, I'd actually be pleased if NZ won. Brilliant team that plays positively in all senses.

John Higgins: Bravo New Zealand! You've got it all - spirit, skill and style. England need to look no further for inspiration.

Phil Smyth: Well played New Zealand. Their positive cricket just seems to win them games. A five-match series would be NZ's 3-1.

How has that missed? Stuart Broad gets the sweep out against Mark Craig, misses, but the ball somehow spins a whisker past the off stump. Lucky.

"Moeen's not bowling with much confidence, but at the moment he's the only spin bowling option in England who turns it enough and gets drift. I'm impressed with his natural skills - what he's lacking is 2,000-3,000 overs he would have bowled if he had always been a bowler, rather than a batsman who bowls. Remember how good he was against India last year."

  19. Eng 166-7 (Buttler 28, Broad 9)published at 15:10 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

Buttler has played a nice innings here, mixing assertive counter-attacking with responsible defence. The latter is in order as he plays out a maiden to Matt Henry.
