"Williamson's done the trick, as he did for Ben Stokes, getting the key wicket. They're looking at the light, though I can't think this will be a problem with spinners on."

"Two umpire's calls on impact outside the off stump, and on height. A lot of people think when there are two yellow flags, it gives too much to the umpire, but Cook is out, and he'll be bitterly disappointed. You feel this is the death knell for England."

The skipper is gone, his quietly heroic vigil is over. Skiddy from Williamson, just going on with the arm, it thudded into Cook's out-thrust pad and the replay shows it clipping the bails. Body-blow for England's hopes of saving this Test.

"It looked out from here, it skidded on. I think Cook knows he's gone, but he's got to review it. Nowhere near the bat."

  5. Umpire reviewpublished at 14:31 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

Now then! Kane Williamson has trapped Alastair Cook in front and the umpire's finger is up. Cook reviews it - is this the death knell for England...

"I've got Bryan Waddle staying with me for a week after this, he'll be unbearable if New Zealand win. I've got a plan - he's going in the outhouse, with the dogs. Worse is possible later in the summer - I've got Jim Maxwell staying, that could be really bad."

Finally, Brendon McCullum turns to Matt Henry for his first bowl of the day, and immediately the man playing only his second Test proves his worth, getting Buttler jumping with a delivery that lifts sharply off the pitch and then drawing the edge with a slightly fuller ball just outside off - again the ball dies short of first slip.

"That's 9,000 Test runs for Alastair Cook. He's the youngest to reach that mark at 30 years 159 days, beating Sachin Tendulkar (30 years 253 days). This is now the highest scoring two-match Test series, beating the 2,892 runs in the 1997 Sri Lanka v India series."

Cook is 13th on the all-time list, external - the next man to overtake is Graeme Smith on 9,265.

  9. Eng 141-5 (target 455)published at 14:26 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

There's something so gallantly English about this solo effort from Cook: the probably-doomed heroism, the almost poignant unflappability as everything tumbled around him. He cuts Craig past cover for four, taking him to a notable landmark...

Southee isn't making Buttler play enough at the moment. The batsman is able to leave most of the deliveries in another maiden.

"Cook has just found his rhythm again. He's controlled; he's trusting his technique against good balls. Matt Henry's not bowled yet today, which is a surprise."

Craig rips one out of the footholes to beat the bat of Cook, but again the spinner's consistency lets him down, as he throws in a short one which Cook cuts powerfully through cover to bring up his 50. Excellent knock from the England captain.

A decent over from Southee, who located the outside edge of Cook earlier in it.

Close, but no cigar. The replay shows Buttler's bat moving tantalisingly towards the ball, but not touching.

A much better over from Craig, finding the footholes with the unrelenting accuracy of a cameraman picking out attractive women in the crowd. A maiden.
