  1. Goodbye

Right, time to wrap it up after an exhilarating day of cricket in which England have finally produced the superb ODI performance that we were all wondering whether they were capable of. Joe Root and Jos Buttler were superb with the bat, and Adil Rashid and Steven Finn starred with the ball, and the result was England's biggest ever ODI win.

Can England keep the feelgood factor going? Join us on Friday at 12:00 BST for the second ODI to find out. Until then, goodbye.

England debutant Sam Billings on Twitter: Is every game like that??? Not a bad debut, awesome day! @josbuttler @joeroot05 @AdilRashid03 unbelievable! #taaaap

  3. Player reaction

England all-rounder Adil Rashid on Sky Sports: "I thought we played exceptionally well as a team. I chipped in with a few runs so that gives you confidence with the ball. You go through ups and downs in cricket and that obviously affected my cricket in all forms. I was probably a bit immature in 2009 and I've changed my mindset and become a more positive cricketer. I don't think I could have asked for a better day today, I hope I can carry it on. Today was a special day for this young team we've got and hopefully now we can kick on to the Oval and repeat what we've done."

  4. Man of the match

    Jos Buttler

England batsman Jos Buttler is named man of the match for his innings of 129 off 77 balls.

He says: "With 400 on the board we could be attacking and the pressure was on them. It was a pleasing win and gives everyone confidence going forward.

"There was a game within a game there [at 200-6]. Brendon used a lot of his frontline bowlers to try and get me and Adil out but we saw that out and it allowed us to attack later in the innings.

"The way we started the innings gave us plenty of time. Credit to Joe Root on the way he played. It gave everyone confidence to follow his lead.

"Adil bowled fantastically well. He spins it both ways and has great control with very attacking fields."

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"What you've seen today is that you can change mindset quickly with players and a coach who want it. England got well beyond par. It was only a few weeks ago in the Caribbean and I heard people saying Adil Rashid was unselectable. Well today he has come in and done exactly what he has been doing for Yorkshire. I can't remember seeing an England one-day performance as good as that."

Kevin Ticehurst: That is the start of a promising new era for our ODI side. Exactly what the doctor ordered after the World Cup debacle.

Andy Donley: It's the British thing to do to overhype success and castigate failure. Let's be patient now and see where it leads.

Guy Giles: Hate to be negative, but one performance proves nothing. It's a start and that's it. Hope there's more to come.

  7. Captain's reaction

England captain Eoin Morgan: "It was certainly a different performance to the World Cup. For us to come out of the traps like that is outstanding. I'm as surprised as anybody given we have two or three new faces in the team, but they held themselves brilliantly and the senior players were outstanding.

"The key is consistency for us. It was brilliant from Adil Rashid, he spins the ball both ways and that's a very valuable asset to have in the side. The guys executed really well today.

"You can look back and say what you want about the World Cup, but I'm looking forward. There's about 90 games until the next World Cup and we need to get some games into this team, and the more we can win that carries some weight."

  8. Post update

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"Every single player who is out there today could play in the World Cup. Joe Root went up a gear today. Jos Buttler has done it again. Morgan played like he did two years ago. He was busy. Opposition teams have always hit it harder than England but today England hit it harder and you saw what it did to the New Zealand fielding."

Mike from Liverpool: This is the type of English cricket the public can get behind!! The passion in particular showed by this group of players is exactly the way to get people falling in love with English cricket in all forms!! Well done!!

Ash Stockton in Taunton: Who are these blokes and what have they done with the England team?

Mark in Chipping Sodbury: New Zealand will have to take a long hard look at their approach after this match. They need to start playing more like England.

  10. Captain's reaction

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum: "It was a special performance from Root and Buttler. To post 400 in any game is outstanding. They blew us off the park.

"You have to admit when you get it wrong at the toss. The second innings makes you realise we got it wrong. But that takes nothingh away from England, who put on a complete performance.

"First of all, I thought we did well to get back in the game. To get 200-6 after 30-odd overs I thought we might be chasing 250. But they chanced their arm nicely, played with no fear and took back to initiative. We could have tried a few more tings but overall we need to be better. We knew they would play like that, we just didn't think they'd get 400. I think this is the way both teams will play this series. The margins could be great with the style both teams are playing.

"Tim [Southee] should be fine next match. It was just after the workload of the Test he was a bit sore. We had to be a bit careful."

John Pierce: Flamboyant, ruthless and entertaining, three words not associated with the England ODI side in many a year. Quality win.

Sean West: What a sensational performance from England, love the new look squad!

Maddy Raman: Goes to show the talent's always been there. It's the confidence & positivity that's been missing from this team.

  12. Match review

Well, what a stunning performance. England have raised the curtain on their new era of one-day cricket in some style. They have absolutely thrashed one of the world's best teams in this format.

They were fantastic with the bat in racking up their biggest ever total of 408-9, with Joe Root stroking a quickfire century and Jos Buttler bludgeoning an ever swifter ton. Adil Rashid and Eoin Morgan played superb supporting roles as New Zealand's much-vaunted bowlers were humbled.

That took the pressure of their bowling performance, but this was still a display not to be sniffed at. Steven Finn and Adil Rashid, two players whose international credentials have frequently been questioned, were brilliant, claiming four wickets apiece to defuse a potentially explosive batting line-up.

As for New Zealand, well they were desperately disappointing. They desperately missed Tim Southee and Daniel Vettori, and will have to improve quickly before the second ODI on Friday.

    NZ 197-8

'Sweet Caroline' booms out on the Edgbaston tannoy. Indeed, good times have never seemed so good. Mitchell McClenaghan is the new batsman for New Zealand, and he's away with a clipped two through midwicket. Nathan McCullum needs a new bat, so we'll have a drink.

  21. Text 81111

Matt Henry is the new man, with Nathan McCullum having arrived at the other end. Tell you what, how good is it to see Steven Finn bounding in with a bit of confidence again.

  25. WICKET

    Taylor lbw b Finn 57 (NZ 190-7)

    Steven Finn celebrates

Clipping leg stump is the verdict of DRS, and Taylor has to go. Good delivery from Finn, full and straight, and Taylor played all around it. Good knock from Taylor, but he surely takes New Zealand's slender hopes with him. The Edgbaston crowd is rocking.

  26. Umpire review

Finn raps Taylor on the pad. Given out on the field, Taylor requests another look...

Gone! First-baller for Luke Ronchi, and Adil Rashid is flying here! Tossed up, spins back in, beats the swish of Ronchi and crashes into the top of off. What a match the Yorkshire all-rounder is having.

  28. WICKET

    Santner c Jordan b Rashid 15 (NZ 185-5)

    Adil Rashid bowls

It was coming. Santner decides he has to force the pace against Rashid - he gets one out of the middle and yammers it down the ground, but the next one is off the edge and is safely snaffled by Jordan at slip.

  29. Post update

    Alec Stewart

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"With the power play still to come it will be interesting to see what New Zealand do. Will they leave it until Ronchi might be in? If they leave it too late it will simply be too much for them."

  30. NZ 179-4 (run rate 6.62)

Santner is dealing in singles here, which is no good to New Zealand. He's a bit like a young fawn caught in the headlights of a speeding freight train as he confronts this imposing target. However, New Zealand are only 11 runs behind where England were at this stage of the innings.

Neil Worrall: Aggressive & exciting batting, pace & variety in bowling and athletic, committed fielding - I could get used to this!!

  32. NZ 173-4 (Taylor 52, Santner 8)

Rashid, who is having an absolutely outstanding match, beats Santner first up with a terrific googly. The next wrong 'un lands a bit short and is picked by the debutant, who cashes in with a much-needed four.

  33. NZ 166-4 (target 409)

    Ross Taylor plays a shot

Taylor is going to be OK to carry on. Santner is struggling a bit here - he can only muster a single from the remaining four balls of Stokes's over. New Zealand can't afford for him to take time to get going.

  34. NZ 165-4

Ross Taylor is going to get a bit of treatment here. He was turning to make his ground when Eoin Morgan unleashed a shy at the stumps and it hit Taylor on the hand. That looked like it hurt, the glove comes off and Taylor is wringing his mitt.

  35. NZ 163-4 (Rashid 7-0-35-1)

Debutant Mitchell Santner is the new man. He's off the mark with a nudge into the leg side off Rashid.

Elliott run out (Billings) 24 (NZ 160-4)

    Ben Stokes bowls

This is silly. Very silly. New Zealand get an extra ball when Stokes sends down a wide off his sixth delivery, but instead of milking a bonus single, they inexplicably decide to turn for a suicidal second. Elliott is run out by miles when Billings sends in a sharp throw to Buttler..

  38. 50 for Taylor

    NZ 158-3

    Ross Taylor plays a shot

An ugly misfield from Eoin Morgan at mid-off gives Grant Elliott a cheap four. Taylor cheekily sweeps past fine leg for four, then brings up his fifty off 46 deliveries with a single down the ground. But then...

    Stephan Shemilt

    General view at Edgbaston

"A really beautiful evening at Edgbaston now, the whole ground in sunshine, bar a shadow that is just beginning to creep across the outfield. There are rather more empty seats than before, perhaps those children on school trips have gone home. The DJ keeps pumping the tunes - how do you decide the soundtrack to an ODI? 'Tell you what, I'll keep Mr Brightside by the Killers until Grant Elliott is batting'."

  40. NZ 148-3 (Taylor 45, Elliott 18)

Strange game this. I've not had the impression that New Zealand have batted that well, England have seemed to keep a lid on the boundaries, and yet the Kiwis are still going at close to seven an over. Rashid is smashed miles into the air by Taylor for another four. He reacts with the perverse delight of a macho wildlife presenter when a crocodile takes a snap at him, smiling at having coaxed Taylor into a wild stroke.

  41. NZ 141-3 (target 409)

    Ross Taylor plays a shot

Ben Stokes is in to the attack. Taylor decides to sneak a run to Chris Jordan in the covers, and almost pays for it as the electric Jordan snakes out a tentacle and almost throws down the stumps at the non-striker's end. Taylor, who is just beginning to move through the gears, then slams Stokes back down the ground for a one-bounce four.

  42. NZ 133-3 (run rate 6.65)

"Let's bowl him through the gate, Adil!" shouts Jos Buttler, somewhat giving the game away. Rashid obliges with a ripping googly which spins back inside the shot of Elliott and just over the stumps. Buttler, whose idea it was in the first place, is taken completely by surprise and clanked on the helmet.

  43. NZ 130-3 (Taylor 33, Elliott 13)

Suddenly, Ross Taylor is roused from his slumber. He seizes on a good-length ball from Plunkett and drills it to the fence, and then next ball he goes one better and smacks him over cow-corner for six. Good over for New Zealand, they needed that.

  44. Post update

    Jonathan Trott

Former England batsman Jonathan Trott on TMS: "In one-day cricket, on fast outfields, you don't necessarily have to play big shots to score at a high-tempo, especially with the fielding restrictions. You can catch up quite quickly with the scoring but if you lose wickets it kills you."

  45. NZ 116-3 (target 409)

Big appeal as Ross Taylor completely misses with a sweep and is struck on the pad by Rashid. England decide against a review and rightly so - the ball pitched outside leg. Rashid is bowling nicely though, he and Plunkett have dried up the runs here.

  46. Join the debate at #bbccricket

Rob Meech: England scored 408 against the Aussies here in one day in the 2005 Ashes. It marked a new dawn. Does today's 408 also?

  47. Drinks break

    NZ 113-3 (Plunkett 4-0-23-0)

Elliott wears a sharp bouncer from Plunkett on the shoulder. Frustration for the New Zealand batsman as they are starting to struggle to find the boundary, the extra pace of Plunkett making him difficult to get away. Just three from the over, and time for drinks.

  48. Join the debate at #bbccricket

    Adil Rashid bowls

Jen de Polo: Well done Adil! Can't understand why he hasn't played more for England in last 5 years.

Merlyn: Few dots and Adil claims a wicket. Get. Him. In. The. Test. Side.

  49. NZ 110-3 (Taylor 17, Elliott 11)

Rashid is settling in here. He foxes Grant Elliott with a googly and gets him to inside-edge one perilously past his stumps. Decent over, seven from it.

  50. NZ 103-3 (target 409)

Grant Elliott, the hero of New Zealand's World Cup semi-final win over South Africa, strides to the crease. He will need to outdo even that remarkable innings if New Zealand are to get close here. He gets off the mark with a tip-toed, flat-bat shot past backward point for four. Plunkett's riposte is a good one, whistling one past the outside edge.

  51. Post update

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"It was nice bowling from Rashid and a good running catch from Joe Root. That's the difficulty for New Zealand, when you are chasing a target like this if you go two balls without a boundary, you can't just nudge and nurdle."

  52. WICKET

    Williamson c Root b Rashid 45 (NZ 94-3)

Joe Root celebrates with his teammates

Rashid strikes! That's what he's in the team for - tossed up, inviting Kane Williamson into the big shot, the batsman doesn't connect cleanly and Joe Root streaks in from the boundary at long-off to collect the catch. England right on top now.

  53. NZ 92-2 (run rate 7.07)

Plunkett is hoicked into the leg-side outfield for a couple. Alex Hales fields serviceably to raucous chants of 'Hales! Hales!' A few sundowners being imbibed in the stands I reckon, and why not? Better over from Plunkett, just five from it.

  54. Post update

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"I will interested to see what pace Rashid bowls. In one-day cricket I always think he is a better bowler when he gives it some flight. This is a big series for him. Moeen Ali has struggled and if Rashid has a good series, England may take a gamble on him in the Ashes."

  55. NZ 87-2 (Williamson 42, Taylor 9)

Kane Williamson jumps over bowler Adil Rashid

Now then, we're going to get our first look at the bowling of Adil Rashid. He batted superbly, what can he do with the nut? It's a slightly erratic first over, not quite finding a consistent line and length, and New Zealand know they have to target him. Williamson does just that, reaching for a wide one and lofting it over mid-off for four.

  56. NZ 79-2 (target 409)

Thanks Phil. Eoin Morgan has shuffled his pack and brought Liam Plunkett into the attack. Plunkett's first three deliveries are on the money, but the fourth is overpitched and Williamson punches it back down the ground for four. Another delivery, slightly wider, gets the same treatment, not quite as well-timed this time but it beats mid-off and trickles away to the rope.

  57. NZ 70-2

    Chris Jordan bowls

Jordan's fifth over - which goes for just two - completes an action-packed first 10 of the New Zealand innings. And with that, I hand you back to Mr James Gheerbrant.

  58. Email tms@bbc.co.uk

Salim in Toronto: If 10 runs have already been scored in the first five balls when chasing 400+, the ideal thing to do is to watch the run rate and keep it ticking, not try to bash every ball. Six runs an over for the first 15 overs or so would be fine with wickets in hand. McCullum did what he did in the World Cup final, did not settle down. Costly wicket, England definitely ahead.

  59. NZ 68-2 (Run-rate 7.55)

Finn is within one ball of another maiden, but Taylor swings hard at the last and diverts the ball up and over the keeper and down to the boundary for four.

  60. NZ 64-2

Oh, so close! Taylor looks to pull a short ball from Finn and almost drags on to his own stumps.

  61. NZ 64-2 (Taylor 2, Williamson 26)

    Kane Williamson plays a shot

One thing you can be certain of, New Zealand will not take a backward step. They will continue to go on the assault in their pursuit of this huge England total. Williamson leans forward and punches Jordan's first ball through extra cover for four before flicking the fourth off his pads and down to the fine-leg boundary. England have removed two big danger-men, but this Kiwi side is packed to the rafters with them.

  62. Join the debate at #bbccricket

Calum Nicholson: Turned on the cricket to see NZ needed over 8 an over after 3 gone. Thought it must have been a mistake.

Luke: Finn on fire! Two cracking wickets. I'm plumping for him to take five!

  63. NZ 53-2 (Target 409)

In keeping with this new attacking edge to England, they have a man at silly mid-on and silly mid-off as Finn charges in to deliver to Williamson. The pressure is on the tourists.

Steven Finn celebrates wicket of Martin Guptill

Speaking of class acts, Martin Guptill has it is in his locker to get New Zealand close to their required total in this match as a smash through cover for four off Finn's first ball shows. England, then, will be delighted to have him back in the tent as swings wildly and nicks one to Buttler. England jubilant.

  66. NZ 46-1

Kane Williamson is a class act. In 2014 alone he scored seven ODI 50s and a century. He underlines the threat he poses with a straight drive down the ground for four through mid-on. However, he does get lucky at the end of an over by trying to chop one that gets an inside edge and flies past his stumps and down to the rope.

  67. NZ 37-1 (Guptill 15, Williamson 8)

Finn veers too short and straight and Guptill is on to it in a flash to pull for four. Williamson then gets in on the act with a flick off his legs for four to the same part of the ground. Runs coming thick and fast. The Kiwis are going at 7.40 an over after five. And one of those has been a maiden.

    Steven Finn celebrates

Simon Goodall: Stevie Finn is showing some bottle here. To recover from the battering he got in the WC is pretty impressive. Fair play.

  69. NZ 27-1 (Target 409)

Not content with claiming the wicket of McCullum and bowling the game's first maiden, Steven Finn is after a fielding point. He runs round and dives to stop a boundary at fine leg as Jordan's second over goes for eight.

  70. NZ 19-1 (Guptill 9, Williamson 0)

Steven Finn is charging in like a man possessed, fuelled by that wicket of McCullum. He finds a tight line and a good length to keep Williamson on his toes and claim a superb maiden - the first of the game.

Richie O'Hara Beamand: Great to see Finn deal with the pressure of McCullum going after him there. Big, big wicket.

Pete Naylor: Oh Brendon, you've done a Ponting. At Edgbaston. It's 2005 all over again!

  72. NZ 19-1 (Target 409)

Edgbaston is still alive with noise as Kane Williamson joins Guptill at the crease for Chris Jordan's first over. Guptill takes a leaf out of McCullum's book by hammering the England opener away for four through cover second ball. He is then almost undone with another swing that catches the inside edge but bounces before it can reach the gloves of Buttler. Guptill takes a breath, composes himself and drives the next ball for another boundary. It's all happening.

  73. WICKET

    McCullum b Finn 10 (NZ 11-1)

    Brendon McCullum

Now he's out. McCullum takes Finn for successive boundaries in typically aggressive style but the big bowler gets his revenge as the opener swings, misses and is cleaned up by the final ball of the over. A crazy over ends in the best possible way for the home side.

  74. NZ 3-0

The Kiwi skipper is just home. Just. What a start that would have been for England.

  75. NZ 3-0

Oh! Is this a run out in just the third ball of Steven Finn's fist over! Rashid throws from fine leg and hits the wickets directly with McCullum struggling to get home at the striker's end. It is going to the third umpire...

  76. Post update

Here we go again. The England players are out and huddling up. New Zealand's openers - Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill - follow soon after. The tourists need 409 for victory. Yes, 409! That is just 8.18 an over. Expect fireworks.

The innings started with a wicket from the first ball. It ends with two sixes launched into the stand by Liam Plunkett to take England to 408-9. It is their highest ever ODI score, the first time they have ever reached 400 in the format and as clear a marker as you could possibly see that this is indeed a brave, new England. Wow.

  89. Eng 407-9

And again! Plunkett goes haywire by heaving a slower ball over mid-wicket for another six. Edgbaston is bouncing!

  103. 50 for Rashid

    Eng 354-6

Buttler's pyrotechnics means Rashid has been able to go about his work slightly under the radar. But his 50, from 37 balls, has been vital. He brings his half-century up with a pull for four. He follows that with a top-edge that sends the ball over the keeper and brings him another boundary.

  104. Dropped catch

    Eng 345-6 (Buttler 105, Rashid 46)

    Brendon McCullum

This is very un-New Zealand like. They didn't put a foot wrong in the field in the Test series, but they've dropped three today. The latest is the skipper Brendon McCullum who runs backwards from mid-on and just gets his fingertips to a top-edged pull from Rashid.

  105. 100 for Buttler

    Eng 340-6

    Jos BUttler celebrates

Buttler goes to 99 with a ramp shot off McClenaghan and moves to a century with a drive through extra-cover. Buttler now has the fastest and second-fastest in ODIs for England. This was from 66 balls. His fastest was from 61. To add to that, this is the highest seventh-wicket stand in all ODIs.

  106. Eng 332-6 (Buttler 95, Rashid 43)

Henry helps England out with a couple of wides, possibly out of desperation at where to bowl to Buttler, who is now within five runs of another quick-fire century.

  107. Dropped catch

    Eng 329-6

    Jos BUttler hits a shot

Taylor has had a shocker. Again. Buttler hammers one towards him at long-on but he misjudges it, sets off late and fails to get there to get his hands underneath it. That is a second drop of the afternoon for the Kiwi batsman after he dropped Root earlier. He's going to owe his side some serious runs.

  108. Eng 323-6

Nathan McCullum is a wily bowler and ties Buttler down with block-hole bowling for three deliveries. But all the bowler needs to do is err slightly and the England batsman is on to it. He smashes a full-toss through the off side for four and then rocks back to cut another boundary to keep the runs flowing.

    Adil Rashid plays a shot

Rashid is all scoops, flicks and swivels. He wheels away to hammer a short ball from Henry but is denied a four by a dive from Nathan McCullum. The throw back in has the third umpire busy for a potential run-out. Rashid was short of his ground but Henry had broken the stumps with his hand and so the batsman survives. Buttler then rocks back and blasts the next ball over midwicket and the rope for six. Wound, say hello to salt. At 111, this is now England's highest seventh-wicket stand in ODIs.

  112. Eng 302-6 (Buttler 73, Rashid 37)

Buttler gets his reverse sweep out to punch a full ball from the returning Nathan McCullum down to the boundary. It is fine shot, but he manages to top it by planting his front foot and launching the ball into the stand over mid-off. Buttler has raced to 73, from just 52 balls. Say it quietly, but if these two stay together until the end, 400 is on.

The Lancashire keeper shows the way and Rashid follows with a scoop of his own into the stand behind the spinner, who follows up with a pull through midwicket for four. 19 off the over. The momentum is shifting again.

  122. Eng 252-6

When Buttler hits it, it stays hit. He takes a step to McClenaghan and times one to perfection through the gap near extra-cover for a beautiful four. Santner continues to give England at least one boundary ball an over. Rashid ensures a rank long-hop is hammered through midwicket for four. England are building again. This is a nice little partnership. Buttler is the key. If he is there at the end, England will have a competitive score.

  169. Eng 144-2 (Elliott 2-0-14-0)

This is effortless stuff from Joe Root, just easing any balls that are slightly off line to the boundary. A leg-sidish delivery from Elliott is serenely flicked off the pads and runs away to the fine-leg fence.

James Cox: Really enjoying this from Root & Morgan, the balance between attack and sense is perfect from both of them.

Jarleth Eaton: What's this?! Attacking intent from England?! Anyone else feel a bit weird as well as excited?

  171. Eng 139-2 (Root 75, Morgan 41)

    Mitchell McClenaghan bowls

Root caresses the ball wide off third man for another boundary, superb timing yet again. McClenaghan shows the frustration in the New Zealand ranks with a vicious bouncer.

  173. Eng 132-2 (run rate 7.33)

Time for a bit of medium-pace from all-rounder Grant Elliott, sporting the lush beard of a Seventies Scandinavian pop star. Floral shirt, neckerchief and flares required to complete the look. England are racing along here and Morgan piles on the punishment with a huge six over long-on. He looks reinvigorated by the move up the order.

"Very strong showing from this new England side. These are really good conditions with no swing from the New Zealand bowlers. The surface has a nice demerara sugar brown to it so the ball is coming on with no deviation. You can play the line of the ball."

The average first-inning score on this ground in ODIs is 214.

  176. Drinks break

    Eng 123-2 (Root 67, Morgan 33)

More from McClenaghan, a man who does a bit of catalogue modelling in the off-season to pay the bills. Don't we all? It's a decent over, just four singles and a wide from it. Time for drinks, with England in a strong position.

"It was a completely misjudged catch. It went to his right and he had to run about 10 metres, but he dropped it. Simon Goodall: Very refreshing this from England. Just hope I've not spoken too soon!

  179. Eng 118-2 (run rate 7.37)

Root gets the old telescope arms out and nails McCullum into the stands at midwicket with a big slog-sweep. He tries to same next ball, doesn't quite get all of it, and is dropped again by Taylor on the boundary. The replay shows it was a very tough chance, Taylor made a lot of ground.

  180. Text 81111

Rob, Chelmsford: "I do appreciate this start by England and it's great to see this positive new dawn. But the world weary England fan within me wonders just what NZ will do to us when they bat on this track. May God help us all....."

  181. 50 for Root

    Eng 102-2 (Root 54, Morgan 26)

A change as Mitchell McClenaghan is brought into the attack for his first bowl of the day. He so nearly makes the breakthrough when he entices Root to edge one behind, but the ball flies between wicket-keeper and first slip and Root has fifty instead. What a reprieve for England, their key batsman missed by a slip cordon that caught everything during the Test series.

  182. Eng 95-2 (run rate 6.78)

Joe Root plays a reverse swing

These two have to be the foundation of England's innings - they've done excellent work so far, but they need to stick in there and go big. Root in particular is playing with such authority that he will be a key wicket. A quieter over off McCullum, just four from it.

"England have done some really good damage here. They have spread the field and it is a big outfield. They should be able to pick up at least five an over. They have had the positive start now they can step back a bit and control it. Low risk cricket shots for high reward."

Jamesd: This is the part that always lets England down, we can't score in the middle overs. Hopefully Root and Morgan will change that.

  185. Eng 91-2 (Root 47, Morgan 23)

An overpitched delivery from Henry is eased back down the ground by Morgan - that gets Brendon McCullum pumping his arms and legs like a powerwalker on the promenade to prevent four. Then a gentleman in a red sweater rather breezily decides to stroll behind the bowler's arm, causing a brief interruption. A jaunty wave of apology as he breaks into a slightly embarrassed trot to retake his place in the stands.

  186. Eng 82-2 (N McCullum 3-0-22-2)

England's new, turbo-charged approach continues - Morgan shimmies down the track and thrashes Nathan McCullum back over his head for a big six. Fetch the binoculars, that's one to stand and admire. England have decided to target Mitch McCleaghan in the field and they run a sharp two when the ball goes in his direction.

  192. Eng 68-2 (run rate 6.8)

Joe Root continues his serene progress with a zippy front-foot drive past mid-off for four. A single means Operation Stop Morgan is resumed, with the off side packed and the leg side barer than a student's kitchen cupboard. An inside edge means the two men on the leg side are pressed into action and Morgan gets three. The Root masterclass continues with another gorgeously timed four, and that is England's highest home powerplay score since World War Two. Just kidding - since 2011.

Mind you, in between he made scores of 0, 17, 25, 1 and 8*, so nothing stellar, albeit being shifted up and down the order. Wasn't it Mark Butcher who stood in as captain for the Test side and was dropped next game?"

  194. Eng 54-2 (Root 30, Morgan 4)

Brendon McCullum has read Eoin Morgan's mind here - the England skipper favours the off side so McCullum has packed that side with close fielders. Morgan has got a closer security detail than a Hollywood star on walkabout. He manages just a couple of twos.

  198. WICKET

    Hales c Henry b Boult 20 (Eng 50-2)

It was all going so well. A single to third man from Root brings up a spirit-lifting 50 partnership off 42 balls, but the optimism is swiftly punctured next ball when Hales mistimes a hook and is pouched by Henry at backward square.

  199. Eng 49-1 (Hales 20, Root 29)

Root breaks the shackles against Nathan McCullum, stepping down the track and pumping him back over his head for four. Busy running brings a further five runs off the over.

  200. Text 81111

Pete in Greenhithe: A player either has an impact on a match or doesn't. With the greatest of sympathy for Roy I'd rather see him go first ball, than scratch around for 10 overs and go for 15.

Paul Mason: Give the lad a chance, we want attacking cricket, sometimes even Gayle and de Villiers get out early doors. Still plenty in the shed.

Steve, London: Reaction to Roy dismissal is depressing. All the moaning is why we are so stuck playing safe, dull ODI cricket.

  201. Eng 40-1 (Boult 3-0-21-1)

Mark Stevens: Being out first ball doesn't mean a player has no talent, or that the team has failed. It means one batsman has had an off day.

  204. Eng 35-1 (Hales 13, Root 22)

Brendon McCullum turns to brother Nathan to take the pace off the ball and wrest back a bit of control for New Zealand. McCullum's slow tweak immediately proves more difficult to get away, with three nurdled singles all England can muster off the over. Still, this is the highest score that England have attained after five overs of an ODI since 2011.

  206. Eng 32-1 (run rate 8.0)

The runs continue to flow for England, these two are timing the ball beautifully. A perfectly respectable delivery from Henry is creamed to the cover boundary by Root. This looks a good surface, that decision from McCullum at the toss is already beginning to look a little dubious.

Ed in Putney: We want a one day team with players that will express themselves. We back Roy as we believe he has the potential. One low score does not matter! The mindset and the intent is what needs to change!

  209. Eng 24-1 (Hales 11, Root 13)

    Tret Boult

Trent Boult was the destroyer-in-chief for New Zealand in the Test series and an early wicket means his tail is well and truly up here. Joe Root is eager to assert his authority against the dangerous paceman though, punching him off the back foot through the covers and then driving him wide of mid-off for another boundary. Decent start from this pair.

  210. Eng 16-1

Alex Hales, who's been in red-hot form for Nottinghamshire, has begun nicely here. Matt Henry is the opening bowler from the other end and Hales cuffs him over point for his first boundary, then drives him beautifully down the ground. England going at eights, on track for 400...

  213. Eng 8-1 (Hales 3, Root 5)

Joe Root is the new number three and he's quickly into his work, knocking a couple of twos to get up and running. Hales is off the mark with a straight drive off his first ball that is brilliantly hauled in by Brendon McCullum just short of the rope.

The result was an eight-wicket defeat that will haunt the dreams of England cricket fans for many years to come.

  222. Watching from afar

    Trevor Bayliss

...Is England's new coach Trevor Bayliss. He's an Australian in the typical Australian mould: tough, old-school, no-nonsense, loves a Vegemite sarnie and knows a thing or two about one-day cricket.

Among the achievements on the resume that so impressed Andrew Strauss and the other big cheeses at the ECB are making the 2011 World Cup final with Sri Lanka and winning the IPL twice with the Kolkata Knight Riders.

But before he can get his hands on his new charges, he has to watch them in action. Think of him as a cricketing Gordon Ramsay, drafted in to rescue a shambolically failing restaurant by bringing the menu bang up-to-date and delivering a few stark home truths.

  223. The audacity of hope

Now look, I know I began on a slightly gloomy note. But it's time to be positive. Because England's road to the top starts here. A new dawn. And more than that, a new brand of cricket. One where players are freed from the shackles to play their natural, aggressive game. Where young players flourish under innovative management. Where children are the future. Teach them well and watch them grow...

You get the idea. The trouble is, we've heard it all before. Will it be any different this time? Well, there are reasons to be positive - interim coach Paul Farbrace has picked some exciting, untried young players in his team. Can the likes of Jason Roy, Adil Rashid and Sam Billings usher in a new era of one-day cricket for England? We could be about to find out...

England leave the field after their defeat by Bangladesh

After the high of England's victory over New Zealand in the first Test, it's time to plummet back down to Earth.

Following the resounding defeat at Headingley which allowed the Kiwis to square the series, it's time for England to get reacquainted with their perennial nemesis: one-day cricket.

The last time England wore coloured kits in meaningful action, they suffered a humiliating defeat by Bangladesh and were knocked out of the World Cup in ignominious fashion.

Now, they come up against one of the best, more brutal ODI sides in the business. Can it get any worse?
