  1. NZ 19-1 (Target 409)published at 18:24 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Edgbaston is still alive with noise as Kane Williamson joins Guptill at the crease for Chris Jordan's first over. Guptill takes a leaf out of McCullum's book by hammering the England opener away for four through cover second ball. He is then almost undone with another swing that catches the inside edge but bounces before it can reach the gloves of Buttler. Guptill takes a breath, composes himself and drives the next ball for another boundary. It's all happening.

Now he's out. McCullum takes Finn for successive boundaries in typically aggressive style but the big bowler gets his revenge as the opener swings, misses and is cleaned up by the final ball of the over. A crazy over ends in the best possible way for the home side.

  3. NZ 3-0published at 18:18 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

The Kiwi skipper is just home. Just. What a start that would have been for England.

  4. NZ 3-0published at 18:17 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Oh! Is this a run out in just the third ball of Steven Finn's fist over! Rashid throws from fine leg and hits the wickets directly with McCullum struggling to get home at the striker's end. It is going to the third umpire...

Here we go again. The England players are out and huddling up. New Zealand's openers - Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill - follow soon after. The tourists need 409 for victory. Yes, 409! That is just 8.18 an over. Expect fireworks.

"You might have plundered 408, but there's still work to do. England's bowlers are out loosening up, while the rest of the team are belted catches by Paul Frabrace. Elsewhere on the outfield, there are four games of cricket being played by youngsters, with yet more balls being hit into the stands."

Former England batsman Jonathan Trott on TMS: "My highlight would be the run-out of Katich at Adelaide (Second Ashes Test in 2010-11 series). I got to run round the field like Alan Shearer with my hands in the air. I was always a slip fielder for Warwickshire but not for England so I had to work hard on that and the run-out was a culmination of all that work."

Former England batsman Jonathan Trott on TMS: "There is always scrutiny in international cricket. The pressures are always there. You need to combat that. It didn't go how I would like to in the West Indies. I had played well for Warwickshire but it didn't go my way.

"Cricket is an unforgiving game. It would have been great to have a fairytale comeback. I have very fond memories of playing for England and to show the world my skills and I am proud of that."

Former England batsman Jonathan Trott on TMS: "You don't work yourself up too much at three. Whereas when you're opening, you're straight in, and that was the difficult part for me. When Cooky and I had a partnership in Grenada, it felt like old times. The feeling you get of batting for England, putting on a partnership, is something you cherish."

Jake Walker: Incredible! England score 400+ in a ODI, who'd have predicted this after meekly crashing out to Bangladesh in the World Cup.

Joe Giacomelli: One day cricket like that will help bring cricket to an entirely new generation in England.

Richie O'Hara Beamand: That...that was...was that REALLY England?! Superb, brilliant, positive, cricket. Well done lads!

  15. Player reactionpublished at 17:48 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

England batsman Jos Buttler: "It's a great start for us. Credit to Joe Root, who really took it to them early. The way Brendon McCullum captains, he loads it at the front and tries to get you out, so we knew if we could stay in for 50 overs we could get a big score. I feel like I've been batting well this summer. There was a lot of talk before the game about a new era, and to go out and deliver it is really pleasing. We'll have to bowl well."

The innings started with a wicket from the first ball. It ends with two sixes launched into the stand by Liam Plunkett to take England to 408-9. It is their highest ever ODI score, the first time they have ever reached 400 in the format and as clear a marker as you could possibly see that this is indeed a brave, new England. Wow.

  19. Eng 407-9published at 17:45 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

And again! Plunkett goes haywire by heaving a slower ball over mid-wicket for another six. Edgbaston is bouncing!

A hat-trick ball for Elliott but Liam Plunkett isn't in the mood to give the Kiwi's any kind of lift. He launches the ball down the ground for six to give England their first ever 400 total. Amazing!
