"If they can stay in, New Zealand can threaten this challenge. They won't feel they're out of this game. But there have been some loose aspects to their bowling and catching."

  2. Eng 323-6published at 17:11 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Nathan McCullum is a wily bowler and ties Buttler down with block-hole bowling for three deliveries. But all the bowler needs to do is err slightly and the England batsman is on to it. He smashes a full-toss through the off side for four and then rocks back to cut another boundary to keep the runs flowing.

"It's been another good partnership. These two have taken their time to get established and now they're making merry. There's not much New Zealand can do: I haven't seen a ball turn or seam. These are perfect batting conditions."

James Kingwell: England have scored 300 in 40 overs! The apocalypse is nigh!

Aaron Trowse: Positive English one-day cricket! Absolutely fantastic so far.

Jonny Wren: Michael Vaughan: "England won't be far off 400". I'm not sure I've heard that phrase before in an ODI!

Rashid is all scoops, flicks and swivels. He wheels away to hammer a short ball from Henry but is denied a four by a dive from Nathan McCullum. The throw back in has the third umpire busy for a potential run-out. Rashid was short of his ground but Henry had broken the stumps with his hand and so the batsman survives. Buttler then rocks back and blasts the next ball over midwicket and the rope for six. Wound, say hello to salt. At 111, this is now England's highest seventh-wicket stand in ODIs.

"If Buttler bats the remaining nine overs, England won't be far off 400."

England's highest ODI score is 391-4 against Bangladesh in 2005.

  7. Eng 302-6 (Buttler 73, Rashid 37)published at 17:02 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Buttler gets his reverse sweep out to punch a full ball from the returning Nathan McCullum down to the boundary. It is fine shot, but he manages to top it by planting his front foot and launching the ball into the stand over mid-off. Buttler has raced to 73, from just 52 balls. Say it quietly, but if these two stay together until the end, 400 is on.

"Beautiful, sunny evening in Birmingham, Edgbaston bathed in warmth. The press box is high above the ground, giving a view over Birmingham - the BT Tower, the Cube and the Holloway Circus."

Back comes Henry, who went for 6.50 an over from the six he bowled earlier. Rashid gets his shovel out to chip a short ball into the leg side with both feet off the ground for a single. Unique but effective. It is one of just five runs from the over as Henry ends the powerplay well for New Zealand.

Merlyn: Beautiful knock from Jos. Power, timing and a real sense of calmness. Gonna enjoy watching him bat for years I hope.

Fenners: Hope I don't put mockers on him but glad Rashid is finally being given a chance. He could make a real impact in Test team too.

"It's just the mindset. They had the same bats at the World Cup, but they didn't have this mindset. Once you've got the commitment to take on the stroke, if you get the ball anywhere near the middle, these grounds aren't big enough."

  12. Eng 283-6 (Rashid 33, Buttler 59)published at 16:53 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

This is the Buttler that took Yorkshire to the cleaners in the T20 Blast. It doesn't matter where McClenaghan bowls, it is going. The batsman swivels to pull one through midwicket for another four. It is a shot that says, "Get that filth away from me".

Buttler is in destruction mode. After a failed ramp shot he cuts away McClenaghan for four to bring up 50 in 42 balls.

"What I like about Buttler is that he always looks very calm. Even when he gets to the crease, you always feel that he's got everything under control. And when you see him strike a ball, he makes it look so easy."

"Santner is having a hard time. He's more of a batsman-bowler, and it's a chastening experience to come in at this sort of time and bowl to batsmen with this licence."

It looks effortless for Buttler as he lofts Santner's first ball back over his head for six. The Lancashire keeper shows the way and Rashid follows with a scoop of his own into the stand behind the spinner, who follows up with a pull through midwicket for four. 19 off the over. The momentum is shifting again.

  17. Eng 252-6published at 16:44 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

When Buttler hits it, it stays hit. He takes a step to McClenaghan and times one to perfection through the gap near extra-cover for a beautiful four. He then gets away with a little flick at one that flies through the vacant first slip area for another boundary. Taylor grins ruefully from the wide second slip position. After swinging sharply away from England, the home side are wrestling some control back.

    Michael Vaughan

"It's a really good pitch. For England to get up with the rest of the world in terms of their style of one-day cricket, the more we play on this type of surface the better. It's hard to play aggressively when the ball is nipping around."

Santner continues to give England at least one boundary ball an over. Rashid ensures a rank long-hop is hammered through midwicket for four. England are building again. This is a nice little partnership. Buttler is the key. If he is there at the end, England will have a competitive score.

Andrew Liddle: Fielding is so important in modern ODI's - and something England need to get better at. Black Caps showing them how it's done.

Jimbo: Let's not forget that this NZ is an excellent side, we won't become one overnight. Come on, England!
