  1. On to Hove

And that's where we're going to leave it - England fans will be hoping for a repeat performance from Sarah Taylor when the series continues at her home ground Hove on Friday. It's another 19:00 BST start - make sure you join us then.

Plenty of cricket on the BBC tomorrow, though. You can listen to Ireland v Australia ODI  commentary from BBC Radio Ulster, but not on your wireless - only through the BBC Sport website and app. And in the afternoon, there's the last two One-Day Cup quarter-finals as Essex, Yorkshire, Surrey and Kent bid to join Notts and Gloucestershire in the semis.

Until then, if you're an England follower, be cheered that Edwards and Taylor were very much back in the groove today. And if you're an Aussie - you're still just one win from regaining the Women's Ashes. Bye for now.

  2. Player of the match

Quote Message: It was nice to contribute, we talked a lot about pride and the performance we put in was brilliant - all the girls did us proud. We're going to go to Hove and try to play the same way. We've always got to look forward and that's what we're doing. I just hope every single one of us can take the form into the next game. from Sarah Taylor England wicketkeeper

Quote Message: The danger at Hove is that it's an interesting-paced pitch, but I've seen Luke Wright and Chris Nash score a lot of runs there in T20. We saw with the Jenny Gunn over where Lanning got hold of it - England can't take their foot off the gas.
  4. Player of the match

The player of the match award goes to England's Sarah Taylor for her half century. No doubt with an honourable mention to the Chelmsford groundsman for getting the game on at all!

  5. Captain's view

Quote Message: A perfect performance from us under extreme pressure. I asked for character and we certainly showed that tonight. The atmosphere here, everyone here gets behind us and it's nice to keep our unbeaten run going. We didn't want to go too much into the Test match, we had a good week at Loughborough and I knew we needed our big players to come to the party. That's character from Sarah Taylor and I'm really proud of her. We've got two massive games, if you're not doing anything in Brighton on Friday please come down! from Charlotte Edwards England captain on Sky Sports

    Ebony Rainford-Brent

Ex-England batter on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: Other than Perry and Lanning, Australia weren't able to build partnerships, even though a few players got starts. They consistently lost wickets - whereas England took it deep and only lost a couple at the end.
  7. Final scorecard

    England celebrate

    Australia: 122-8 (20 overs) (Perry 30, Sciver 2-18)England: 125-3 (17.3 overs) (Taylor 50, Osborne 2-22)

    Bowling figures: Perry 4-0-26-1; Schutt 2.3-0-21-0; Coyte 3-0-23-0; Jonassen 3-0-24-0; Osborne 3-0-22-2; Harris 2-0-9-0.

  8. Captain's view

Quote Message: We couldn't get the momentum we wanted, we kept losing wickets and 122 was never going to be enough. We were out-fielded by England but we're going to try to get that win at Hove, though we're going to have to play a lot better. The ground's an interesting shape which took a while to get used to, but the crowd came and supported England well - we like to play in front of big crowds. from Meg Lanning Australia captain on Sky Sports

Quote Message: Australia weren't at the races today. They always seemed to be an over behind, which is odd when you're trying to set a total.

England beat Australia by seven wickets and take two points - Australia lead multi-format series 8-4.

  18. Post update

    Ebony Rainford-Brent

Ex-England batter on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: This is absolutely brilliant from England and shows the fight they have, that they are capable of coming back. They have been clinical today and far outplayed Australia. This is what you need to see going into the last two games.
  19. England 125-3

A streaky inside edge for four from Sciver wins it with 15 balls to spare -  but England won't mind. Fortress Chelmsford repels the invaders once more.

  20. Eng 121-3 (target 123)

Sciver smashes Coyte through mid-wicket for four. Two to win.

Quote Message: Australia would have felt there were three games to do it and been very confident but maybe they have let their guard down a little bit.
  22. Eng 117-3 (Sciver 12, Brunt 13)

Brunt whacks a two through mid-wicket, leaving her six to win - she aims an almighty blast at Perry's last ball but doesn't connect. Perry finishes with 1-26 from four overs - England need six runs from 18 balls.

  23. Post update

    Charles Dagnall

Quote Message: Brunt will come off now and ask Charlotte Edwards if she can open in the next game!
  24. Eng 115-3

  25. Post update

    Ebony Rainford-Brent

Ex-England batter on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: Meg Lanning is still thinking and trying new things.
  26. Eng 109-3 (target 123)

Lanning doesn't have many cards left to play - and sticks her trump card on the table by throwing the ball to pace spearhead Ellyse Perry for her last over - but it's advantage England as Brunt smashes the first ball of the over through point for four. 14 from 23.

  27. Eng 105-3 (Sciver 12, Brunt 1)

Katherine Brunt, as we said earlier, is up the order at number five today - and a long over ends when she guides her first ball for a single. 18 from 24 balls wins the game for England.

  28. Post update

    Ebony Rainford-Brent

Ex-England batter on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: Good captaincy from Meg Lanning, she almost teased that out of her by bringing the fielders up. But let's not take away from a brilliant innings, Sarah Taylor looking at her finest.
  29. WICKET

Taylor st Healy b Osborne 50 (Eng 104-3)

Oh, that's clever captaincy. A fifth fielder is brought up into the circle to tempt Taylor to hit over the top - and when she does, she's beaten in the flight and is comprehensively stumped. 19 needed from 25 balls, can England see it home from here?

  30. Post update

    Ebony Rainford-Brent

  31. 50 for Sarah Taylor

Quote Message: This is a brilliant turnaround from England. They have never lost at Fortress Chelmsford and this is the sixth match.
  33. Eng 100-2

Finally umpire Nick Cook signals a no-ball for a shoulder-high full toss from Osborne which Sciver whacks, baseball-style, to mid-on for one. Hundred up for England. They also have a free hit.

  34. Post update

    Ebony Rainford-Brent

Quote Message: Sciver has come in and given it that impetus.
  35. Missed run-out

    Eng 98-2

Sciver comes back for a second run, taking on the powerful arm of Ellyse Perry but keeper Healy can't take it cleanly and the chance is missed. Sciver makes them pay with an aggressive pull for four.

  36. Post update

    Alison Mitchell

    BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: Sciver looks to be wearing an enormous jumper. The breeze got into it as she went for that run and made it look like a Puffa jacket.
  37. Eng 91-2 (Taylor 45, Sciver 5)

Jonassen to bowl, Australia look reasonably happy to give Sciver the strike at this stage - but the Surrey all-rounder is a capable striker of the ball, clubbing a two to deep square leg and rotating the strike well. Taylor nicks another one off the last ball - 30 balls left for England to score 32.

  38. Post update

  40. Eng 84-2 (target 123)

Natalie Sciver is the new batter, having donned a long-sleeved sweater - it looks a slightly chilly night in Chelmsford after all that rain earlier. She's off the mark with a single, Taylor knocks one to deep square leg to retain the strike. England need 40 from 36 balls.

  41. Post update

    Ebony Rainford-Brent

Ex-England batter on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: Australia will still give themselves a little bit of hope. You'd say it was very much in England's favour but Australia will hope to tie a few new batsmen up.
  42. WICKET

Edwards st Healy b Osborne 39 (Eng 82-2)

    Charlotte Edwards is stumped out

Edwards slides her bat along the ground - but did she get it back in time? No - the verdict is out. The England skipper walks off to warm applause, but will be disappointed not to have seen her side home.

  43. Post update

    Ebony Rainford-Brent

Ex-England batter on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: Charlotte Edwards isn't renowned for moving the quickest, she got her feet stuck.
  44. Umpire review

With Harris looking unlikely to make the breakthrough, the Southern Stars turn back to fellow off-spinner Osborne - and when Edwards over-reaches herself coming a yard down the track, Australia appeal for a stumping...

  45. Post update

    Alison Mitchell

    BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: Bit of a headache for Meg Lanning here about how they are going to break this partnership.
  46. Eng 80-1 (Edwards 38, Taylor 40)

    Sarah Taylor bats

Coyte in for her third over, but Taylor and Edwards are both using their feet well against the seamers to put them off their length. Five from the over, with both batters eyeing up half-centuries - this stand is worth 75.

In tennis terms, Australia have three match points to win the Women's Ashes. And unless they break this partnership, they'll be down to two.

  47. Post update

  48. Eng 75-1 (target 123)

The cap-wearing Grace Harris to continue, her off-spin looks fairly innocuous but it's sometimes those sorts of bowlers who get you out. Remember Steve Smith getting Alastair Cook out last Friday? A quieter over for England, four singles from it so they're keeping the run rate pretty constant - 48 needed from 48 balls.

  49. Post update

    Ebony Rainford-Brent

Ex-England batter on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: They're getting a good measure of the pitch, which the Australians struggled to do.
  50. Eng 71-1 (Edwards 33, Taylor 36)

Captain Lanning rotates her bowlers, Sarah Coyte has switched to the Hayes Close End, but it's business as usual for the old firm of Edwards and Taylor - the captain does well to find a gap wide of mid-on for four, while Villani does well to chase one to the long-off boundary. The hosts need 52 from 54 balls to keep the series alive.

  51. Post update

Quote Message: We're going well and these two are building a good partnership so the nerves are in a good place. We're all aware we need to win this one to stay in it and it's a case of turning things around. The girls bowled fantastically and that was backed up in the field. We love playing here at Chelmsford and the crowd have been phenomenal. from Lauren Winfield England opener on Sky Sports
Lauren WinfieldEngland opener on Sky Sports
  52. Eng 62-1 (target 123)

Grace Harris into the attack - and she's bowling in a cap! Time to enter her into the cap-bowling hall of fame which includes Geoffrey Boycott (of course) and ex-Australia all-rounder Lisa Sthalekar. Though listed on the TV caption as "right-arm medium", it looks like Harris is bowling off-spin, though at one point she bowls an enormously high full toss of the sort you'd see on a village green. It's not signalled as a no-ball though, as the bemused Taylor knocks it away for a single.

England are at the halfway point of their innings in all senses - 10 overs gone, 62 runs scored, 61 needed.

  53. Eng 57-1 (Edwards 25, Taylor 30)

    Charlotte Edwards bats

All too easy for Taylor as Jonassen bowls an inviting full toss and the Sussex wicketkeeper lifts it back over her head for four. A single takes Taylor to 29 from 21 balls - Edwards is batting more serenely, but knocks a two to third man to bring up the fifty stand. The singles are flowing very freely. 66 needed from 66.

  54. Eng 47-1 (target 123)

Another high full toss, this time from a spinner, doesn't tempt the umpire so signal a no-ball - but Edwards swats it away for a single.

England need 76 from 72 balls - were it to rain now, they're 35 ahead on Duckworth-Lewis.

  55. Post update

    Izzy Westbury

Middlesex captain on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: Could that be a turning point? It should have been taken. Those last two balls I have started to get a little bit jittery. It's much easier when you're playing.
  56. Dropped catch

    Eng 45-1

Spin from both ends as off-spinner Erin Osborne comes to the party, bowling round the wicket from the River End. Osborne had the briefest of stays with the bat, hitting her only delivery for a single and being run out coming back for the second. But she's let down when Edwards skips down the track and is dropped by Villani leaping to her left at mid-off. Could be crucial.

  57. Post update

    Izzy Westbury

Middlesex captain on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: Perhaps a little lack of concentration from Meg Lanning not putting a fine-leg or a third man for Taylor. Some of those runs could have been saved. This was the point where Australia had a little glimmer of explosiveness.
  58. Eng 43-1 (Edwards 19, Taylor 22)

Sarah Taylor and Charlotte Edwards pick up runs

With the powerplay fielding restrictions over, Australia turn to Jess Jonassen's left-arm spin, but England are happy to milk her first over for a couple of singles, a carefully dabbed two to third man and a well-run three from a delicate Taylor paddle-sweep.

  59. Post update

    Charles Dagnall

    BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: A much more productive powerplay for England than Australia.
  60. Eng 36-1 (target 123)

Taylor tries a dab to third man, it flies off an inside edge to fine leg but some great backing up from Edwards ensures it's a comfortable single. At the risk of a commentator's curse, but I have to say it, these two are being really positive between the wickets. Australia were 26-1 at this stage.

  61. Post update

    Alison Mitchell

    BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: The crowd want to see more of this from Taylor. England want more of it. This could be the match which re-ignites the series and Sarah Taylor's form.
  62. Eng 33-1

Sarah Coyte replaces fellow right-arm seamer Schutt - but Taylor takes a step down the track and hammers a four through extra cover. Lovely shot.

  63. Post update

    Charles Dagnall

    BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: Edwards was apoplectic after that delivery wasn't called a no-ball for height.
  64. Eng 27-1 (Edwards 15, Taylor 10)

Vintage Sarah Taylor - crouching down to use the pace of the ball and ramp Perry over fine leg for four. A single takes her into double figures. Edwards then has to face a brute of a waist-high full toss but she despatches it through long leg for four.

  65. Post update

    Izzy Westbury

Middlesex captain on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: This is almost like the Lanning-Perry partnership equivalent for England.
  66. How's stat?!

  67. Post update

    Izzy Westbury

Quote Message: One of the common themes in county cricket is how do you get Charlotte Edwards out? The answer is you run her out because with the bat it is almost impossible.
  68. Eng 17-1 (target 123)

Taylor clips Schutt through mid-wicket for two, though Edwards had to hurry. I'm sure even the England captain herself would concede that with her 36th birthday on the horizon (17 December if you want to send a card), she's not the quickest between the wickets. Plenty of quick singles keep the pressure on, before Edwards takes advantage of the field being up to guide a four through the covers.

England's best over yet, but why do I get the feeling they'll win this by nine wickets or lose it by 30 runs?

  69. Post update

    Izzy Westbury

  70. Post update

  71. Eng 7-1 (Perry 2-0-4-1)

Sarah Taylor in at three - and there's a big cheer from the Chelmsford crowd as Perry is charged with a wide outside off stump. Taylor, batting in a long-sleeved shirt and sleeveless sweater, is off the mark with a single off her legs.

  72. Post update

    Izzy Westbury

Quote Message: That was a nothing shot from Winfield. She almost lashed out in anger because that score is just five runs from two overs.
  73. WICKET

    Winfield c Villani b Perry 1 (Eng 5-1)

England are dawdling a little here - and when Winfield tries to force the pace, she lifts the ball to mid-on and is easily caught by Elyse Villani, who is the only player fielding bare-headed and has recently added a dark streak to her shock of blonde hair. She celebrates with Perry as Winfield departs - caught Elyse, bowled Ellyse.

  74. Post update

    Izzy Westbury

Middlesex captain on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: One big innings is all it needs for potentially saving the Ashes. I think it is a below par total from Australia - I would have expected them to score more but it is a tough one because how do England approach it? Go all guns blazing or slow and steady?
  75. Eng 4-0 (Edwards 3, Winfield 1)

Right-arm seamer Megan Schutt, who's had a good series with the ball, takes the second over - and Edwards is nearly caught out of her crease as she chops the ball down towards the keeper. Some good hustle brings England some quick singles, but it's not an explosive start by the hosts.

  76. Post update

    Alison Mitchell

  77. Eng 1-0 (target 123)

Edwards, the top run-scorer in women's T20 internationals, takes four balls to get off the mark as she guides a two through mid-wicket. Winfield plays her first ball back to the bowler as though we're still in Test match mode, and hits the last straight to a fielder to end a tight first over.

They will be a little critical of their slower balls at times that were full tosses but overall it should give them enough momentum. Obviously they have the benefit of knowing what they have to do.
  95. Interval

    Aus 122-8

    General view of play

Coyte's full-length dive was not in vain - the second run is awarded. So...

England must score 123 in 20 overs to keep the Women's Ashes alive.

  96. Umpire review

Cameron shovels another two, then can only flat-bat a single to long-off. Coyte to face the last ball of the innings - she drives past the bowler for a single, comes back for a second and is that a run-out at the striker's end? We're going upstairs...

  97. Aus 117-8

England stick with Jenny Gunn even though Shrubsole has an over left - dot ball, then a single, Cameron skies it high but it falls short of two fielders and they run two.

  98. Post update

  99. Aus 114-8 (Cameron 7, Coyte 3)

Sarah Coyte is Australia's number 10 - she whacks the ball to mid-wicket, Natalie Sciver pulls out the full-length dive which means Coyte earns three runs rather than four. One over left.

Blackwell drills the ball to Anya Shrubsole at mid-off - and though not renowned as one of England's fleetest-footed fielders, the Somerset pace bowler throws down the stumps at the bowler's end and Harris's Ashes debut is over nearly as soon as it has begun.

  114. Aus 98-4

Harris steps across her stumps, looking like there's a Jos Buttler-style scoop in her armoury, but she can only hit it straight to short fine leg for a single. Even the Chelmsford scoreboard is struggling to keep up.

It's time for Grace - not WG, but young Queensland all-rounder Grace Harris, who comes with a big reputation. She's off the mark with a single as Knight has had a change of ends, but for now she's overshadowed by Blackwell who does well to crack a four through mid-wicket.

England have taken consistent wickets and no-one has quite been able to get going. If England can keep them to around 110 they will feel very much in this game.

Redemption for Jenny Gunn - having dropped that catch earlier, she comes in from the wide mid-wicket boundary to pluck one out of the air as Jess Jonassen tries to take on Sciver - who makes the breakthrough again and now has impressive figures of 2-0-9-2.

  121. Aus 82-3

Jess Jonassen, who won the player of the match award on her Test debut in the last game of this multi-format series, is the new batter. Hazell, who's limping slightly as she walks back to her mark, is denied a wicket maiden as Perry knocks a single - but she nearly has a second wicket as the left-handed Jonassen swings and misses. Danielle Hazell celebrates wicket of Meg Lanning

Just what England needed - the frustrated Lanning attempts another big blast as Hazell serves up a full toss, and is caught by the diving Lydia Greenway coming in from the cow corner boundary.

  139. Aus 50-1 (Perry 18, Lanning 28)

Perry rides her luck a little - chipping the ball just over the fielder at mid-on but a sliding stop by Natalie Sciver at long-on cuts off the boundary. 50 up for the Southern Stars.

  140. Aus 47-1

Gunn's off after that one expensive over and England turn to the off-spin of Heather Knight, who's likely to bat in the middle order today rather than her usual opening role in Tests and ODIs. Australia's second-wicket pair plunder some singles, while Knight serves up a juicy full toss which Lanning powerfully swats for four through mid-wicket.

  164. Aus 3-0

Brunt's regular partner-in-(fast bowling)-crime Anya Shrubsole will begin from the River End - there's no slip fielder in for her, and a quick shuffle of the field after one delivery, though she then bowls a wide. Since a defeat by New Zealand in March 2014, they've beaten South Africa once, Ireland four times, Pakistan five times, West Indies once and England once.

Will it be "sixteen, going on seventeen" for the Southern Stars tonight?

The Queensland right-hander made 39 not out from 21 balls in the third and final game in Ireland, after an opening stand of 121 by Elyse Villani (80 from 53 balls) and Ellyse Perry (55 not out from 46).

  197. Fortress Chelmsford?

England appeal for a run-out against Australia in 2013

England proudly boast that they've never lost at Chelmsford - in Twenty20 cricket they've beaten South Africa by nine wickets in 2014, Australia by 15 runs in 2013, India by eight wickets in 2012, New Zealand by eight wickets in 2011 and by 37 runs in 2010. In the ODI format they've beaten Australia twice in 2009, NZ in 2004, and SA in 2003 and 2000.

    Charlotte Edwards and Meg Lanning

Evening, everyone. It's win or bust time for England. The Women's Ashes trophy is teetering on a cliff edge - one false move and it will disappear down under for a couple of years.

Having won the first ODI of this points-based multi-format series, Charlotte Edwards's England side have suffered successive defeats by Meg Lanning's Australia, who only need to win one of these three Twenty20 internationals to regain the trophy. But three England wins would see the series drawn 8-8 - and the hosts retain the Women's Ashes.
