  1. Australia in the ascendancy

That's about it from us with Australia taking a 4-2 lead on points into the Women's Ashes Test, which begins at Canterbury on Tuesday 11 August with full coverage on TMS and here on the website again. I hope you'll join us then.

Until then, our attention turns back to the men's Ashes which resumes at Edgbaston on Wednesday. For a taster, a little later tonight, Graeme Swann presents an Ashes Roadshow on BBC Radio 5 live from 19:30 BST. Thanks for your company and good night.

  5. Captain's view

Quote Message: Our natural style is being really aggressive, we were a bit timid in the first game but the whole team has contributed in the last two games. I'm in a good position at number three to bat for a long time and always like to contribute to the team. Our bowlers did a fantastic job, Ellyse set the tone with two wickets up front and every other bowler chipped in. Any Test match we play gets the players excited, hopefully we can put on a good show. It's important to celebrate victory - we'll celebrate a little but we'll be ready to go when the Test comes along. from Meg Lanning Australia captain

  6. Captain's view

Quote Message: We were simply outplayed in all three departments. We can't drop and miss chances off world-class players. The opening bowlers set the tone but we haven't carried it on, didn't take our chances, and we've not batted well enough. I don't think the toss made any difference. Hopefully we can come back well in the Test - but we're going to have to play a lot better than we did in these last two games. from Charlotte Edwards England captain

  7. Player of the match (and the series)

Quote Message: It's been a wonderful series, hugely competitive across the three games and really nice to come away with the points today. Charlotte and Sarah are huge threats for them, but I thought we were clinical as a bowling unit and batted well too. We played some great cricket across the three games. from Ellyse Perry Australia all-rounder (now wearing two medals)

  12. Bowling figures

Australia's bowling figures all bear closer scrutiny, you can't find a weak link there:

    • Perry 7-0-16-2
    • Schutt 7-0-25-0
    • Farrell 9-1-29-0
    • Jonassen 6-1-23-1
    • Coyte 10-0-38-2

  15. Post update

    Izzy Westbury

Middlesex captain on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: Ellyse Perry should be player of the match - scoring 67 at more than a run a ball, and then taking those two key wickets of Edwards and Taylor. Athletic in the field, she's had a great all-round game - and just as on Thursday, she and Lanning contributed 152 runs combined.
  16. Post update

The Southern Stars have also won the ODI element of the series 2-1 - apparently there will be an award for player of the series, while Australia will receive an ODI series trophy (but just to be clear, they haven't won the Ashes yet).

What is good news if you're an Aussie is that if Australia now win the Test, that would put them 8-2 ahead on points - and England would need to win all three Twenty20 internationals to square the series and retain the Ashes.

    Australia team celebrate

AUSTRALIA BEAT ENGLAND BY 89 RUNS - TAKE TWO POINTS AND LEAD WOMEN'S ASHES SERIES 4-2

  19. WICKET

Shrubsole b Beams 3 (Eng 152 all out)

    Anya Shrubsole is bowled out

Shrubsole fails to pick Beams's googly and is bowled heaving across the line - Beams has three wickets and Australia have won.

  20. Eng 152-9 (target 242)

Megan Schutt back into the attack, Shrubsole plays and misses, while I'm sure that's the sound of a car being started I can hear in the background at New Road. A couple of singles push England's score past 150, but the game has been up for a while.

  21. Eng 149-9 (target 242)

Anya Shrubsole "isn't really a number 11" according to TMS's Izzy Westbury, "she's better than that" - but both sides are rather going through the motions here as Shrubsole takes a single off her first ball.

Quote Message: She had to get on with it, and was bowled aiming a wild yahoo to cow corner.
  23. WICKET

    Elwiss b Beams 7 (Eng 148-9)

Elwiss goes out in a blaze of glory - a big slog is high, wide and not particularly handsome, and she's bowled by Beams.

  24. Post update

    Izzy Westbury

Middlesex captain on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: Brunt and Shrubsole bowled economically, but if you look at the Australian seamers, their four all bowled well. And this series hasn't really been one for the spinners.
  25. Eng 146-8 (target 242)

Coyte continues, this is her last over, she'll be the first Aussie to finish her spell today - Elwiss drives to extra cover where the ball bounces just in front of the diving Alex Blackwell, who's an excellent fielder. Coyte finishes with 2-38 from her 10, and England need a theoretical 96 from 54 balls.

  26. Post update

    Izzy Westbury

Quote Message: Australia have just been better in all departments today.
  27. Post update

In by a mile. But if you have a third umpire, you might as well use him!

  28. Umpire review

A quick single from Elwiss, Bolton throws to the stumps, Healy takes the bails off and they go upstairs...

  29. Eng 142-8 (Elwiss 5*, Gunn 3*)

Elwiss drills Beams to long-off for a single, the leggie is still bowling quite fast and flat, and a couple more singles mean England need a round 100 from 10 overs to pull off one of the most unlikely victories of the year.

  30. Eng 139-8 (target 242)

Jenny Gunn, with an ODI average of nearly 20 from 125 ODIs, is probably too good to be batting number 10 (having batted the majority of her career between five and eight), but that's her job today. She's off the mark with a single. England need 103 from 66 balls.

  31. Post update

    Holly Colvin

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: I don't blame her for trying that. I prefer to see people getting out like that than sweeping or hitting round the corner.
  32. WICKET

    Marsh c Blackwell b Coyte 0 (Eng 138-8)

Sadly for England, this is becoming a procession - Laura Marsh, needing to force the pace, hits the ball straight to extra cover and is out without scoring.

  33. Eng 137-7 (target 242)

Elwiss nudges a single to steal the strike from new batter Laura Marsh, and ends a pretty sorry powerplay for England, in which they scored 23 runs and lost three wickets.

There's a delay between overs - it looks like a pushchair being moved from behind the bowler's arm? Now, it's the ground staff being summoned - umpire Wharf is concerned about footmarks and summons some sawdust. A gigantic wheelbarrow is brought out, containing all sorts of equipment, to effect repairs.

  34. Post update

    Holly Colvin

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: I'm not sure sweeping is the right option on this track. One of Sciver's strengths is hitting down the ground and I would have liked to see her hit straighter.
  35. WICKET

    Sciver c Farrell b Beams 2 (Eng 136-7)

Sciver sweeps at the leg-spinner, gets a top edge and is easily caught at short fine leg. The most relieved woman on the field is Beams, who had just dropped a fierce caught-and-bowled chance a couple of deliveries before.

Duckworth-Lewis? England are about 60 behind. Safe to say rain can't, and won't, save them.

  36. Eng 135-6 (target 242)

Georgia Elwiss is in at eight - England have two new batters in. Just a couple of singles from Coyte's over - though it finishes with four byes - and I'm already fearing the game might be up for England. They need 107 from 78 balls.

  37. Post update

    Holly Colvin

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: They've been a little frantic with their running, England. They might have made it if they'd just kept going.
  38. WICKET

Brunt run out 31 (Eng 129-6)

    Katherine Brunt

...and just about anything does happen. Brunt hits the ball to point, sets off for a run, Sciver starts and then stops, Brunt is stranded halfway down the track and it's an easy run-out as Coyte's throw is gathered by keeper Healy.

A mixed bag of an over from Beams finishes. Her figures will say 1-0-5-0 but won't tell half of the story.

  39. Eng 126-5

Speak the leg-spinner's name and she'll be brought on! Kristen Beams, who didn't have the best of games at Taunton (taking 1-52) but is back in the side today, comes on for the 36th over. Her first ball is driven for two by Brunt, and her second flies out of her hand and lands at cover point! It's called as a no-ball. Just about anything could happen here...

  40. Eng 124-5 (target 242)

New batter Natalie Sciver has to jam her bat down on a yorker from Coyte, the ball hits her back leg and nearly bowls her. But she survives for now.

And I've just realised, leg-spinner Kristen Beams hasn't bowled at all yet... will it be too late to bring her in now? On the evidence of that four she let through earlier, I don't think she's in the side as a specialist fielder...

  41. Post update

    Holly Colvin

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: You can't blame Greenway. She was eyeing up the straight boundary, Lanning kept her mid-on and mid-off up and it's paid dividends.
  42. WICKET

    Greenway c Jonassen b Coyte 45 (Eng 123-5)

A tame dismissal for Greenway, with a fifty on the horizon, as a thick edge spoons up into the air and it's a straightforward catch for gully.

  43. Post update

  44. Powerplay

    Eng 123-4 (Greenway 45*, Brunt 27*)

What's this? England have taken the batting powerplay a full two overs before they're obliged to do so - there will be a maximum of three fielders outside the circle for overs 34-38. Greenway steers Farrell for two twos and a single to move to 45, Brunt cuts two more, before a powerfully-struck two to cow corner means that's not only the fifty stand - it's Brunt's highest ODI score (27).

  45. Post update

  46. Eng 114-4 (target 242)

More busy accumulation from England's fifth-wicket pair against Coyte - this stand is now worth 42 and they need 128 from 102 balls

  47. Post update

    Holly Colvin

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: This is a very crucial point. If England can get to the batting powerplay without losing a wicket, they can really use it to get the run rate down. If Australia take another wicket, it will be difficult for England to explode.
  48. Eng 109-4 (Greenway 38*, Brunt 20*)

Australia need to regain a bit of control after that last Jonassen over, so the spinner's off and Rene Farrell returns for her eighth over. There's an appeal for lbw against Brunt, but umpire Saggers isn't interested... Farrell strays with a wide, while England keep chipping away with some ones and twos - and fortune favours Greenway as she reverse-sweeps and the ball lofts just over short third man for two. 12th man Rebecca Grundy comes on with a drink for the two batters between overs.

  49. Post update

    Holly Colvin

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: It's nice to see England getting a wriggle on. Brunt won't die wondering and it's good that she's been given the licence to have a go here.
  50. Eng 102-4 (target 242)

Katherine Brunt blasts a quick single to mid-on to bring up the hundred for England, while she and Sarah Coyte both end up in a heap as they collide while the bowler attempts to take the ball. Just two more singles from the over - the equation for England is 140 from 114 balls.

  51. Post update

  52. Six for Brunt

    Eng 99-4 (Greenway 33*, Brunt 16*)

Brunt swipes a two to third man - then we have the  first six of the series as she slog-sweeps Jonassen over mid-wicket for a maximum. Greenway then unleashes an Eoin Morgan-style reverse sweep for four. Seven and a half an over? Pah. England managed 14 off that one!

  53. Post update

  54. Eng 85-4 (target 242)

Greenway angles her bat to ramp Coyte for a single over short fine leg, Brunt can only rotate the strike, and Australia continue to be rewarded for disciplined seam bowling as Grreenway can't beat the inner ring. A single to third man leaves the required rate around seven and a half an over.

  55. Post update

    Ebony Rainford-Brent

Ex-England batter on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: I see what they're doing by sending Brunt in, but Nat Sciver can play an intelligent innings - and hit the ball out of the park too.
  56. Eng 82-4 (Greenway 26*, Brunt 6*)

Finally the Brunt experiment starts to bear fruit as she smacks Jonassen for four wide of extra cover - it's England's first boundary since Greenway hit that trio of fours six overs ago. But a tidy, rapid over from Jonassen, considering it contained a boundary.

  57. Eng 78-4

Captain Meg Lanning rotates her bowlers with Coyte replacing Perry. After a single from Greenway, Brunt tries to go big again but possibly connects too cleanly - it's a single straight to the cover sweeper.

  58. Eng 76-4 (target 242)

Brunt comes down the track and heaves a full toss to deep mid-wicket for a single to get off the mark. Greenway adds a single, she has 25 from 45. England need 166 from 24 overs (or 144 balls if you prefer). But they've only added nine runs in five overs, for the loss of one wicket.

  59. Eng 74-4

Greenway knocks Jonassen for a single - now, how long before Brunt goes big against the spinner? Well, first ball, she tries to cut a half-volley and nearly chops onto her stumps. This should be entertaining at the very least.

  60. Post update

    Ebony Rainford-Brent

Ex-England batter on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: I would prefer to see Sciver promoted above Brunt - she can give it the long handle too, but I wonder if she might offer a bit more longevity. She's got a more rounded game.
  61. Eng 73-4 (target 242)

An interesting promotion by England - that wicket means they're now 49 behind on Duckworth-Lewis if it rains again, so the big-hitting Katherine Brunt - described as a "gladiator" by TMS's Lizzy Ammon - is in at number six, no doubt under instructions to give it the long handle. But for now, it's Greenway having to defend against Perry - just a single from the over, Brunt playing her first ball back to Perry. Australia were 83-1 at this stage.

  62. Post update

    Ebony Rainford-Brent

Ex-England batter on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: Knight was looking for the sweep, and she's completely done herself. She'll be very cross with herself. It was well bowled by Jonassen, she knew that England had to get the ball moving.
  63. WICKET

    Knight b Jonassen 38 (Eng 72-4)

    Heather Knight is dismissed

A disappointing end for Knight - spinner Jess Jonassen switches to the Diglis End, and as Knight steps well across to the off side, she can't connect with her nudge to leg and is bowled.

  64. Eng 71-3 (target 242)

Knight defends against Perry, jamming her bat down on the ball which bounces on the ground and spins back in a curious arc, leaving the Berkshire opener momentarily flummoxed as to where it is... but she's all smiles after that. Another two through the covers takes her to 38, but she has to dig out another yorker to survive the over. As we mentioned, the D/L par at this stage is 99.

  65. Post update

A little brighter as Perry gets ready to resume her over. But there's a little delay... do we have to wait for exactly 16:20? No. Back under way.

  66. Post update

Again, we've not lost any overs. Good.

  67. Restart

We're going to restart at 16:20 BST.

Heather Knight has had a quick chat with Charlotte Edwards, and is now going through a few stretches on the boundary while the umpires re-emerge.

  68. Post update

This could be a rather short interruption. The umpires' umbrellas are coming down, if that's a good sigh. The pitch is still covered, but they've not bothered to cover the rest of the square.

I'm starting to learn that the most obvious portent of rain at particular cricket grounds is the ground staff's body language. I was in Grenada earlier this year watching England play West Indies, and as soon as the ground staff donned their yellow trawlermen-style sou-westers, rain was definitely on the way.

  69. Post update

As before, we can lose a small amount of time before overs start being reduced.

The Duckworth-Lewis par score for the end of this over, with three wickets down, is 99, so England are still a little adrift of where they would want to be.

  70. Rain stops play

    Eng 69-3

As the song goes, it's raining again...

Ellyse Perry had returned to the attack but only managed the first ball of her over (hit for two by Knight) before the rain returned. Knight has 36 from 67 balls, Greenway has 21 from 33, this stand is worth 39.

  71. Eng 67-3 (Farrell 7-1-13-0)

Knight, so strong through the covers, is being kept under wraps by some accurate bowling from Farrell, who's into her seventh over, and a ring of off-side fielders. A single to fine leg takes her to 34 from 66 balls, but that's the only scoring shot from another tight over from the New South Wales seamer.

  72. Eng 66-3 (target 242)

Greenway moves into double figures, whacking Coyte through mid-wicket for four - it even evades the fleet-footed Ellyse Perry patrolling the square leg boundary, as does a flick off her legs for four more. A firm on-drive brings the Kent left-hander her third successive boundary - having taken 28 balls to score nine, she now has 21 from 31.

  73. Post update

  74. Eng 54-3 (Knight 33*, Greenway 9*)

Farrell goes close with an lbw appeal when Greenway is caught on the back foot and struck on the back pad by a full toss. Would be interesting if we had DRS, but we don't.

And we now have a match, with the 20-over landmark reached. If the heavens opened now and we had no more play, Australia would win by 39 runs on Duckworth-Lewis.

  75. Post update

    Izzy Westbury

Middlesex captain on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: Nicole Bolton isn't the tallest figure but has a hell of an arm in the deep. And I've been impressed by Rene Farrell's bowling with the control she's had today.
  76. Eng 50-3 (target 242)

Medium-pacer Sarah Coyte into the attack for her first over, and having played herself in for a few overs, Lydia Greenway tries one of her trademark reverse sweeps but can't make contact. A more orthodox shot brings her four when she flicks the ball under the diving Beams at short fine leg and it's the left-hander's first boundary. 50 up for England.

  77. Post update

    Izzy Westbury

Middlesex captain on BBC Test Match Special

What will Charlotte Edwards be thinking now?

Quote Message: Something I find hardest as captain [of Middlesex] is trying to hide your own disappointment when you're out as your demeanour will affect the rest of the team.
  78. Eng 46-3 (Knight 31*, Greenway 3*)

Knight steers Farrell through backward point, some good team-work by Sarah Coyte and Kristen Beams turns a likely four into three. Greenway pinches the strike with a single.

  79. Eng 42-3 (target 242)

We're inching towards the minimum 20 overs for a contest here.. Knight is going OK but Greenway, who hangs her bat out to bunt a single to third man, is very much digging in - she has scored two from 12 balls.

    Heather Knight
  80. Eng 39-3 (Farrell 4-1-4-0)

Knight plays and misses at Farrell, but thankfully for England, had kept her back foot in the crease as Alyssa Healy whips the bails off. Knight moves on to 26 with a single Farrell is more than justifying her selection today, having only conceded four runs in four overs.

  81. Post update

    Izzy Westbury

Middlesex captain on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: This Knight-Greenway partnership is important for England. It doesn't matter if they take a little longer to get in, as long as they stick around.
  82. Eng 38-3 (target 242)

Seamer Megan Schutt returns in place of Jonassen, and after a single from Greenway, Knight opens the face well to dab a four through third man. There's a stifled lbw appeal as Knight is hit on the pad by one sailing well down the leg side, and a single takes the vice-captain to 25. Five overs until we have a game.

  83. Eng 32-3 (Knight 20*, Greenway 0*)

The required rate is up to 5.72 - but a worrying sign is that the New Road ground staff are still hovering next to the covers, as if they sense more rain ahead. Heather Knight gets England back up and running with a lovely cover drive for two. Her 20 has come from 47 balls.

  84. Post update

  85. Eng 30-3 (target 242)

Jonassen finishes off her rain-extended over with three dot balls to the left-handed Greenway.

  86. Ready to go

Ready to resume - as we said, no overs have been lost, so Lydia Greenway is waiting to face her first ball from Jess Jonassen after that wicket fell on the last ball before the rain came.

If England are still three wickets down after 20 overs (for a game to be constituted), the D/L par score is 93.

  87. Who to pick for the Test?

    Izzy Westbury

Middlesex captain on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: Sonia Odedra has been on the county circuit for yonks. She played in the Test last year, for me it was 'right time, right place' with Brunt injured. But my gut feeling is that she's a good county player, I can't see her coming back into the [Test] squad, she didn't even play in the England Academy side against Australia.

  90. Post update

  91. Pitch inspection

Play to resume at 15:35 BST. No overs lost.

  92. Post update

  93. Pitch inspection

Umpires coming out to have a look, and a chat with the New Road ground staff. One or two of the side covers have been removed, but the main covers are still on. Australia are laughing and joking by the boundary, as well they might.

While the playing conditions for women's ODIs aren't quite the same as the men's, I think we can still lose a little more time before Messrs Duckworth and Lewis get involved and start chipping off overs.

And as I write that... the side covers are being reattached. Bad times.

  94. Post update

    Izzy Westbury

Middlesex captain on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: If I were Australian, I'd be running up and down by the pitch saying 'let's play'.
  95. Why we need 7.3 more overs

An important point to note - as England have not yet faced 20 overs, we do not yet have a game constituted.

So in the (hopefully unlikely) scenario that the players don't get back on the field, it would be a "no result" and both teams would take one point.

  96. Post update

    Izzy Westbury

Middlesex captain on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: I love Ian Bell-type cricketers, I could watch Meg Lanning all day, and Sarah Taylor falls into that category. She's almost on her own in terms of talent, but we've not seen it fulfilled. She's a very good player but could be so much better.
    Sarah Taylor and Ian Bell
  97. Post update

Izzy Westbury on TMS thinks this could be a "short, sharp shower" - short, sharp or not, the rain is now heavy enough that the rest of the square is now being covered, in addition to the pitch - while both teams have retreated from the dug-outs to the dressing-room.

  98. Rain stops play

And on that note, before play can resume, the rain is now beating down strong enough that the players have to go off as the covers are brought on.

Winfield run out (Bolton) 7 (Eng 30-3)

Oh, no... Winfield sets off for a single which was never there, is sent back and Nicole Bolton's direct hit means it's all over for the Yorkshire opener.

  101. Eng 30-2

Decent shout for lbw from Farrell, with Knight in front of her stumps - but there's no DRS in this series and so the vice-captain remains. Maiden over.

Middlesex captain on BBC Test Match Special

Quote Message: This might just be a short, sharp shower.
  104. Eng 30-2

Australia turn straight to spin with the compulsory powerplay concluded, with slow left-armer Jess Jonassen on at the New Road End. Just a Knight single from a rapid over.

  105. Post update

    Dan Norcross

Four overs is all we'll see of Schutt at this stage - Australia turn to fellow right-arm seamer Rene Farrell, who's probably more medium-fast than fast-medium but has been preferred to teenager Holly Ferling today. There's a short extra cover catching, with a ring of four fielders behind her, and some tight bowling from Farrell restricts England to just a solitary single.

Perry has a slip in, England help themselves to three singles as Elyse Villani is kept busy at mid-on - risk-free cricket is what's needed at this stage for the hosts.

  108. Eng 25-2 (Schutt 4-0-13-0)

Winfield clips a single past square leg - Schutt has a big grin on her face, along with a thick stripe of sun cream over her nose and cheeks (which her new-ball partner Perry always has, come rain or shine). Knight moves to 14. At this stage, for what it's worth, Australia were 21-0.

After two overs of Marsh, Anya Shrubsole returns as England look to ring the changes. But Australia keep building, three from the over.

  214. Aus 75-1

The New Road ice cream man is starting to drum up some trade as England turn to medium-pacer Natalie Sciver as their sixth bowler. Can she atone for that missed run-out chance? Lanning adds a two and a single, she's up to 25 and not far behind Bolton who has 33. That's the fifty stand.

We're aware there are a few issues with the scorecard at the top of the page - rest assured, technical team are aware and are working on it. You can find a full scorecard by clicking here.

  216. Aus 72-1

Lanning comes down the track and lofts Marsh for four over her head, before crashing a full toss for four more through extra cover. Bolton is content to play the supporting role, but it's 11 from a good over for the tourists.

  217. Aus 61-1

Gunn begins her fifth over, Australia are in careful accumulation mode and with the field spread, there are easy pickings for the left-hand/right-hand pair. Bolton has 32 from 64, Lanning is up to 12 from 19.

  219. Aus 57-1 (Bolton 30*, Lanning 10*)

England turn to spin for the first time - it's Kent off-spinner Laura Marsh, bowling round the wicket to the left-handed Bolton and over the wicket to the right-handed Lanning. Just three singles from a tidy first over of spin.

  221. Aus 54-1

A single takes Australia to 50, before Lanning makes England pay for missing that run-out chance as she goes inside-out, hoisting Gunn wide of long-off for four.

  223. Aus 49-1 (Bolton 27*, Lanning 5*)

Lanning is leading a charmed life here - Bolton pushes the ball to mid-wicket, Lanning is halfway down the track and looking stranded, but a fierce throw - too fierce - from Natalie Sciver - is wide of the stumps, down by Elwiss's feet and the Aussie captain makes her ground. A gentler throw to the bowler would surely have seen the dangerous Lanning back in the hutch.

  225. Aus 46-1

Plenty of energy in the field from England, Gunn is quickly through her third over as Australia try to rebuild with some ones and twos.

  226. Aus 41-1 (Elwiss 2-0-8-1)

A miscue from Lanning, the Aussie captain (a centurion in the last game) nearly perishes without scoring as the ball spoons up over mid-wicket but thankfully for her, there's no fielder in the vicinity. A let-off - and two singles from the over. Bolton has 23 from 46 balls, Lanning has one from seven.

  228. Aus 39-1 (Bolton 22*, Lanning 0*)

Bolton helps herself to a couple of twos, before unleashing a shot-of-the-day contenders - a booming cover drive, they always look so good from left-handers - which beats Heather Knight's dive to the boundary.

  229. Aus 31-1

Captain Meg Lanning is in at number three. Elwiss, who began her England career as a front-line seamer but whose batting has come on more recently, has batted at seven in the first two ODIs but not bowled until today. However, her first ball to Bolton (they ran on the catch) is a no-ball and the free hit ball is a full toss, smacked down the ground for four by the left-hander, who moves to 14 with a single.

  235. Aus 24-0

Keeper Sarah Taylor is up to the stumps for Shrubsole, there's an excitable lbw shout from the Somerset seamer as the ball clatters into Bolton's pads but the appeal is stifled as it looked to have pitched outside leg. There's a short cover and short mid-wicket in catching positions, and England will feel they have contained Australia well - the Southern Stars having been 30-2 and 38-0 after 10 overs in each of the previous ODIs.

If there's one thing everyone always says about Worcester, it's undoubtedly one of the prettiest county grounds in England, and (perhaps with one eye on the weather) fans are making their way into the ground all the time. Just a couple of runs from the over, Brunt has 0-13 from five.

Quote Message: That's disappointing off the last ball of the over as you always want your fielders to back you up. Jenny Gunn is one of the best fielders in the team, she's always charging from long-on to long-on in T20, and she has big hands. A rare mistake from her.
  239. Aus 21-0

The runs have dried up for the Southern Stars - a run of 18 dot balls (punctuated only by those two wides in the sixth over) is finally ended as a misfield by Jenny Gunn at cover allows Bolton a single off the last ball of the over.

  241. Aus 20-0 (Brunt 4-2-11-0)

BBC Weather's Peter Gibbs told us yesterday to expect "a fresh westerly wind making it feel chilly out in the middle" - well, several Aussie players in the dug-out are huddling beneath white towels, including captain Meg Lanning who's next in. Villani gets lucky as she is inches away from chopping the ball onto her stumps - the tireless Brunt bowls another maiden over.

    Weather forecast
  242. Aus 20-0 (Shrubsole 3-0-9-0)

Here's a question. If cows lying down is a portent of rain, does the same apply to ground staff? A posse of what appears to be New Road workers are stretched out just behind the boundary, watching the game. Out in the middle, Shrubsole sends down a couple of wides as she slants the ball across leftie Bolton. No runs off the bat this over though.

Some running repairs for Nicole Bolton between overs - it looks as though her trousers need a bit of tape after that full-length dive.

  247. Aus 10-0

Villani takes her fourth single of the morning, Bolton has to dive for the crease to make her ground. Shrubsole hasn't quite hit the heights in this series that she did last year when she was player of the tournament in the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh - she took 0-42 at Taunton, 1-41 at Bristol and has 0-7 from two overs today.

    Elyse Villani
  248. Aus 9-0

After the pasting it took from the rain in the last few days, the New Road outfield is looking a bit slow here - Bolton straight-drives past the diving Brunt and though she caught it well, England cut it off for two.

  250. Aus 6-0 (Villani 2*, Bolton 4*)

Anya Shrubsole to share the new ball, as usual, from the Diglis End, as the left-handed Nicole Bolton takes guard. Her first ball is jabbed down to Laura Marsh at fine leg for a single, Villani opens her account in similar fashion and when Shrubsole strays onto leg stump again, it's a long chase for Brunt who athletically flips the ball back from the cow corner boundary to keep the score to three. Villani nicks the strike with another single.

  251. Aus 0-0

Gun-barrel straight from Brunt first up, with two slips in, and the Yorkshire right-arm pace bowler completes a maiden over to Villani.

And here's some optimism from TMS's Dan Norcross - if England win today, and win the Test, they retain the Ashes...
