Summary

  • Australia win by 89 runs to take 4-2 points lead in series

  • Australia win ODI element of the series 2-1

  • Two wickets each for Perry and Coyte

  • Greenway hits 45 for England

  • Lanning hits superb 85 in Australia's 241-7

  1. Eng 73-4 (target 242)published at 25 overs

An interesting promotion by England - that wicket means they're now 49 behind on Duckworth-Lewis if it rains again, so the big-hitting Katherine Brunt - described as a "gladiator" by TMS's Lizzy Ammon - is in at number six, no doubt under instructions to give it the long handle. But for now, it's Greenway having to defend against Perry - just a single from the over, Brunt playing her first ball back to Perry. Australia were 83-1 at this stage.

Knight was looking for the sweep, and she's completely done herself. She'll be very cross with herself. It was well bowled by Jonassen, she knew that England had to get the ball moving.

A disappointing end for Knight - spinner Jess Jonassen switches to the Diglis End, and as Knight steps well across to the off side, she can't connect with her nudge to leg and is bowled.

  4. Eng 71-3 (target 242)published at 23 overs

Knight defends against Perry, jamming her bat down on the ball which bounces on the ground and spins back in a curious arc, leaving the Berkshire opener momentarily flummoxed as to where it is... but she's all smiles after that. Another two through the covers takes her to 38, but she has to dig out another yorker to survive the over. As we mentioned, the D/L par at this stage is 99.

A little brighter as Perry gets ready to resume her over. But there's a little delay... do we have to wait for exactly 16:20? No. Back under way.

Again, we've not lost any overs. Good.

  7. Restartpublished at 16:14

We're going to restart at 16:20 BST.

Heather Knight has had a quick chat with Charlotte Edwards, and is now going through a few stretches on the boundary while the umpires re-emerge.

This could be a rather short interruption. The umpires' umbrellas are coming down, if that's a good sigh. The pitch is still covered, but they've not bothered to cover the rest of the square.

I'm starting to learn that the most obvious portent of rain at particular cricket grounds is the ground staff's body language. I was in Grenada earlier this year watching England play West Indies, and as soon as the ground staff donned their yellow trawlermen-style sou-westers, rain was definitely on the way.

As before, we can lose a small amount of time before overs start being reduced.

The Duckworth-Lewis par score for the end of this over, with three wickets down, is 99, so England are still a little adrift of where they would want to be.

  10. rain stops play

Rain stops playpublished at 22.1 overs

    Eng 69-3

As the song goes, it's raining again...

Ellyse Perry had returned to the attack but only managed the first ball of her over (hit for two by Knight) before the rain returned. Knight has 36 from 67 balls, Greenway has 21 from 33, this stand is worth 39.

  11. Eng 67-3 (Farrell 7-1-13-0)published at 22 overs

Knight, so strong through the covers, is being kept under wraps by some accurate bowling from Farrell, who's into her seventh over, and a ring of off-side fielders. A single to fine leg takes her to 34 from 66 balls, but that's the only scoring shot from another tight over from the New South Wales seamer.

  12. Eng 66-3 (target 242)published at 21 overs

Greenway moves into double figures, whacking Coyte through mid-wicket for four - it even evades the fleet-footed Ellyse Perry patrolling the square leg boundary, as does a flick off her legs for four more. A firm on-drive brings the Kent left-hander her third successive boundary - having taken 28 balls to score nine, she now has 21 from 31.

  14. Eng 54-3 (Knight 33*, Greenway 9*)published at 20 overs

Farrell goes close with an lbw appeal when Greenway is caught on the back foot and struck on the back pad by a full toss. Would be interesting if we had DRS, but we don't.

And we now have a match, with the 20-over landmark reached. If the heavens opened now and we had no more play, Australia would win by 39 runs on Duckworth-Lewis.

Nicole Bolton isn't the tallest figure but has a hell of an arm in the deep. And I've been impressed by Rene Farrell's bowling with the control she's had today.

  16. Eng 50-3 (target 242)published at 19 overs

Medium-pacer Sarah Coyte into the attack for her first over, and having played herself in for a few overs, Lydia Greenway tries one of her trademark reverse sweeps but can't make contact. A more orthodox shot brings her four when she flicks the ball under the diving Beams at short fine leg and it's the left-hander's first boundary. 50 up for England.

What will Charlotte Edwards be thinking now?

Something I find hardest as captain [of Middlesex] is trying to hide your own disappointment when you're out as your demeanour will affect the rest of the team.

  18. Eng 46-3 (Knight 31*, Greenway 3*)published at 18 overs

Knight steers Farrell through backward point, some good team-work by Sarah Coyte and Kristen Beams turns a likely four into three. Greenway pinches the strike with a single.

  19. Eng 42-3 (target 242)published at 17 overs

We're inching towards the minimum 20 overs for a contest here.. Knight is going OK but Greenway, who hangs her bat out to bunt a single to third man, is very much digging in - she has scored two from 12 balls.

  20. Eng 39-3 (Farrell 4-1-4-0)published at 16 overs

Knight plays and misses at Farrell, but thankfully for England, had kept her back foot in the crease as Alyssa Healy whips the bails off. Knight moves on to 26 with a single Farrell is more than justifying her selection today, having only conceded four runs in four overs.
