Stuart Archer: Re Stewart Dobson comment (44 overs). Comparing Hales to Warner is like comparing Jedward to Oasis.
Irfan has had a lot of success today with that fullish delivery that just leaves the right hander outside off stump. Morgan is the latest batsman to swing and miss frustratingly. However, he connects off the final ball, swatting a one-bounce four down the ground, and turns a very good over for Pakistan into a good one for England.

"As an experienced 12th man, I have no idea what Eoin Morgan was trying to say when signalling for a replacement bat. There was one time when Andy Roberts kept signalling with Antiguan-style waving, and our 12th man Gordon Parsons eventually brought out Andy's entire kit bag for him to choose from."
New bat required for Eoin Morgan - he's hit a quick ball from Wahab right off the splice and the handle's gone. Back in the pavilion, perennial 12th man Chris Jordan quietly sets to work whittling a new blade from a single piece of willow.
Almost a run out as Wahab collects very smartly off his own bowling but sends the throw just wide of the stumps. Morgan can't beat the infield off the final ball of the over, and this is turning into a good powerplay for Pakistan.

Stewart Dobson: I'm sure some of these people saying Hales doesn't have the technique for Tests said the same about Warner.
Irfan back into the attack. Morgan, already glistening with a thin sheen of sweat in the Abu Dhabi heat, does well to jam his bat down onto a well-directed yorker. Very good over from Irfan at this stage of proceedings.
Whomp! Eoin Morgan dances down the wicket and absolutely smashes Yasir Shah into the stands at midwicket. That was meaty.

"We've got Mark Robinson on at the interval to discuss his new role as the England women's coach, then Charles Dagnall has been talking to Stuart Broad about his new book."

"Hales isn't the fastest between the wickets, there will be a few more twos out there now. Morgan's very quick, Root has recognised that, and they're scampering."
Eng 230-2 (Root 56, Morgan 7)
Batsmen! Know your fielders! Luckily, Eoin Morgan has been reading the Michelin Guide to Pakistani Groundfielding - he correctly identifies the man at mid-off as the relatively athletic Babar Azam and decides not to risk a second run to the youngster. Just three runs from the first powerplay over.

Shannon McKee: Despite this century, Hales shouldn't be opening in Tests. He doesn't have the technique or footwork against top, fast seamers.
So, Eoin Morgan is the new man, with an unusual assignment - a ten-over cameo from you today please, Eoin. Very cheeky from Root - he ramps Anwar over his shoulder and over fine leg for four.

"After he'd been the top-rated T20 batsman in the world, it's been difficult for Hales to establish himself in this format, but if he has a good rest of the series, England will be more inclined to take him to South Africa as a Test opener.
"It's been a measured innings, which is what you want from a 50-over game. For the Test series, you're looking more at temperament than technique."
Hales st Sarfraz b Iftikhar 109 (Eng 216-2)
Sadly, it's all over for Hales next ball. He tries to smash Iftikhar again, overbalances, drags his back foot out of his crease and Sarfraz does the trick behind the stumps. Still, a very fine knock from the opener.

"That is a long way - they're proper boundaries here at Abu Dhabi. A fine strike, straight over a fielder."
A much-needed boundary from Root - Iftikhar darts one down and Root plays it nice and late, just gliding it past point for four. Hales decides he had quite enough of such subtleties, steps down the track and clobbers a short delivery over the ropes. He didn't so much get hold of that as grab it by the lapels and shake its lunch money out of its pockets...
