  1. Eng 204-1 (run rate 5.37)published at 38 overs

Hales brings up the 100 partnership with a jab into the off side. But those milestones have rather disguised the fact that England have got a bit bogged down just when they need to be accelerating - just 14 runs of the last four overs.

"He's done very well - a landmark innings. It's strange in cricket how 100 seems much more significant than 99, but he's got there. There were probably three runs there, but after running two he took off his helmet and started to wave his bat and Joe Root was looking for a third run!"

Kevin Howells adds: "Let's hope there's not just one run in it at the end."

Hales gets to three figures with a paddle sweep that beats short fine leg and runs away for two. An excellent knock - now can he steer England to 300?

"Quite naturally, Hales will have those three figures in his mind."

  5. Eng 197-1published at 36 overs

After the mistakes of the first ODI, England have paced this one perfectly - but they need to make sure they lift the rate in these final 15 overs rather than getting becalmed again. Wahab back, Hales squirts one down to third man.

"I'm a little bit concerned for Adil Rashid on the confidence front. I've not often seen him bowl as he did on Wednesday. And Alex Hales really is a confidence man, so today should do him no harm if he gets a few runs."

  7. Eng 194-1 (Hales 97, Root 39)published at 35 overs

We've rattled through that over of Iftikhar. Four singles, Hales in striking distance now.

Yasir to continue. Azhar Ali is now trying to find a suitable location in the field to hide the slightly injured Wahab - like a man trying to position an unloved fruitbowl in the position of least possible prominence in the kitchen.

Root hits Yasir over the top and that's his first boundary, off the 46th delivery.

  11. dropped catch

Root dropped on 30published at 33 overs

    Eng 181-1 (Hales 92, Root 31)

Shelled it! Root, looking to lift the tempo, reverse sweeps Iftikhar, but a sprawling Wahab lets it right through his mitts at short cover. Root is not the sort of man you want to reprieve.

"England will be pleased with Hales - he looks quite relaxed at the crease, and I've even seen him having a little dance to the tunes between overs, which shows he's in a good place."

Don't count on Wahab Riaz for the next series of Dancing On Ice - he's just gone over on his ankle again, trying to slide elegantly on the turf. He grimaces a bit, but it looks like he's going to continue. England are milking Yasir quite nicely, another six off this over.

Double the score at 30 overs is the rule! England should be looking at 300. And also can people stop moaning about Roy and Hales if anyone actually watched the county game they would know they're worth the risk of a low score as they can destroy teams when they get going! Fed up of pessimistic England fans.

Iftikhar is an old-looking 25-year-old - he's got one of those leathery faces that wouldn't look out of place in a western, or an old cigarette advert. A cricketing Diego Costa, if you will. Five off his first over.

  16. Eng 166-1published at 30.2 overs

It's pitched well outside leg - Root survives, and Pakistan lose the review.

It's all happening! Debutant Iftikhar, in his first over, has struck Root on the pad. Initial verdict is not out, but Pakistan want another look...

  18. dropped catch

Hales dropped on 77published at 30 overs

    Eng 165-1

But he gets lucky next ball, getting himself into a horrible tangle trying to leather a half-tracker and under-edging a tough chance that Sarfraz can't quite hold on to. Hales, however, is not to be deterred - he gets one in the slot from Yasir and again he pounces, swinging it high back over the bowler's head for another six. 14 off the over, a biggie.

Have that! Hales finally breaks the shackles, drops to one one knee and smashes Yasir Shah over the ropes at midwicket. Lusty.
