  1. Umpire reviewpublished at 19.2 overs

Left-arm paceman Wahab goes round the wicket in the manner of his compatriot, the great Wasim Akram - it almost immediately produces an appeal for a catch behind, the umpire raises his finger and Hales immediately reviews it...

  3. Eng 111-1 (Yasir 5-0-31-0)published at 19 overs

With Wahab Riaz having benefited from a change of ends, now leg-spinner Yasir Shah has switched to the far end (ie not the pavilion/commentary end. It's actually called the Northern End. I wish some cricket grounds would think up more imaginative names for their ends/stands than just the compass points. Personal view).

Root and Hales take four singles from the first four balls, but Root has a little talking-to from the umpire for running down the middle of the pitch. He plunders a well-run three, before another Hales single takes the opener to 48 from 51 balls. Nelson (111) arrives...

"Pakistan's only chance of a comeback in the middle stage of the innings is to take wickets. Otherwise England are quite well versed in running away with the show from this position."

  5. Eng 103-1 (Hales 45, Root 1)published at 18 overs

Joe Root joins Hales at the crease - like Roy, he was out without scoring on Wednesday. Unlike Roy, he's currently in a three-way battle with Steve Smith and AB de Villiers for the number one Test batting ranking. He's happy to fend off the rest of Wahab's over, opening his account with an inoffensive single to the cover sweeper.

Richie O'Hara Beamand: Now to see if we can build another partnership, losing wickets in clusters has been our big problem, of late.

Liam Johnson: We'll be 120-3 in a few.

"It was a soft dismissal in the end - he wanted to get a bit of elevation but it hit the toe of the bat. But he's played a good innings, the platform has been set, and England can think big now."

Jason Roy doesn't make it to drinks - as just when he was going so well, he chips a fairly straightforward catch to mid-on, having made 54 from 57 balls. Replays show it was a cunning slower ball from the left-armer which deceived Roy. Stand by for the Twitter backlash as they players take drinks...

  10. Drinks? Not yet...published at 12:10

We almost had a drinks break there, but the 12th men and the ground staff were shooed off. Looks like we're having one more.

"This is good cricket by England - hitting boundaries and playing with a bit of flair. In the last match, they were in a strong position then they nosedived; they just have to keep this momentum going."

  12. Eng 100-0 (Roy 53, Hales 44)published at 17 overs

Hales joins in the fun, slog-sweeping Shoaib Malik for four through deep backward square leg and then punching him for four through the covers when the off-spinner drops short. Two singles bring up the century stand. Fair to say England are in third gear at the moment... but with no wickets down, when do they move up to fourth?

    Eng 90-0

Roy reaches his third ODI half-century from 53 balls, guiding his eighth four towards cow corner. He's clapped by the England players and staff on their balcony, though they remain seated for now.

"Hales is clearly a strong contender to open in the South Africa Test series, but he does have a tendency to edge outside the off stump that worries me."

  16. Eng 86-0published at 15.3 overs

Wahab Riaz has had a change of ends, the ball keeps low as Roy has a big heave-ho and the bowler and batsman exchange big grins. When he does connect, he drills another four through extra cover. The Pakistan fans on the grassy bank, some wielding enormous pandas and teddy bears, are urging their side on, but it's been England's morning so far.

Matt in Twickenham: Roy and Hales seem to enjoy batting together, could this be the key to a successful open partnership? Looking back Hayden/Langer, Cook/Strauss, Greenidge/Haynes, Attapatu/Jayasuriya all had great relationships and succeeded. Could this be worth thinking about when selecting our next Test opener? Just a thought.

Jason Roy gets the reverse sweep out of his locker, this time it's all along the ground and they run a two as the tumbling Babar Azam - set to be promoted to open the innings today - does the fielding. An inside-out lofted off-drive brings him four more, taking his tally to 42 from 46 balls.
