Harry O'Haye: Typical England, one bad game and back to 3 runs an over brigade. They need to be trying for 350 regularly and take the odd 220 all out.

Fraser Conway: Hales averages 20.9 (20 innings) and Roy 27.2 (11 innings) and still in squad? Openers surely should be averaging 35+. Need big scores.

  2. Eng 28-0published at 7 overs

Irfan lumbers in for his fourth over, the steely eyed Roy flicks him off his legs for a couple before jabbing a single to mid-on. He's slightly shaded his partner Hales in these early stages, although the Notts man picks up a couple of singles - Roy has 16 from 23 balls, Hales has 12 from 19. But there's a brief moment of hope for Pakistan when Irfan fizzes one just past Roy's forward prod.

"Even if we are developing young players, we still have to win matches. I see counties trying to do it and one of the reasons it doesn't work is that if you don't win matches, the young players can get disheartened. But we're not at that stage with England."

Decent start this for England - and just for once, a decent crowd in to watch. For a lot of the workers in Abu Dhabi, this is their day off.

Max Baggins-Craig: England have it within the players to succeed and they know it, they need to concentrate that bit more and believe in themselves.

Fenners: Shoaib and Hafeez have 400 ODIs today. Them asides, England have more caps so its time to deliver. We are not newbies any more.

  6. Eng 23-0 (Roy 13, Hales 10)published at 5.4 overs

Hales advances down the track to Anwar before heaving him across the line, it reaches the deep square-leg fielder on the first bounce and they run one, while Roy picks up his third boundary of the day as he lofts another of Anwar;s cutters over mid-on for a first-bounce four.

"England aren't racing away, but it's a solid start and they'd settle for that. Hales and Roy are having a look but there's no harm in that after the traumas of the first match - and there's plenty of power to add."

  8. Eng 18-0 (Irfan 3-0-11-0)published at 5 overs

Hales cuts and misses, no joy yet for the giant Irfan, but the fans are enjoying themselves out on the grassy bank.

"That Alex Hales pull was reminiscent of Michael Vaughan, the way he stood up and dismissed it."

  10. Eng 17-0published at 4.1 overs

A shorter ball from Irfan and Hales powerfully pulls it through mid-wicket for four, while the TV director keeps cutting to a game taking place nearby in the desert, between deliveries.

  11. Eng 13-0published at 4 overs

While Aggers informs listeners about a phantom chicken nugget-smuggler among the TMS team, Hales on-drives at Anwar and a misfield by Wahab Riaz allows him to come back for two. Anwar is experimenting with more cutters and when Hales knocks another quick single to mid-on, this time Wahab redeems himself with a smart stop and he even hits the stumps from a sitting position. Talking of sitting, this is a sedate rather than lightning start.

Alex Dann: So much negativity at the minute, one bad result and the positive cricket from the summer is forgotten?

  13. Eng 10-0published at 3 overs

Alex Hales takes strike for the first time today - for those of you who note such things, he has changed his ODI shirt number from 35 to the number 2 last worn by Joe Denly about five years ago. He's nearly caught in the slips for the second time in this series as he edges just wide of second slip for a single - that's the only scoring shot.

"That last ball from Anwar was a cutter. Paul Farbrace said yesterday that Chris Woakes was much more effective in the first ODI in his second spell, when he started introducing cutters."

  15. Eng 9-0 (Roy 9, Hales 0)published at 2 overs

There appears to be a bigger crowd in than on Wednesday, with loud cheers when Babar Azam leaps to field the ball at short mid-wicket. Roy is showing plenty of early intent but can't get the rest of the over away.

  17. Eng 9-0published at 1.1 overs

Right-arm seamer Anwar Ali will share the new ball, and Roy whips his first ball through square leg for four. One of the Surrey biffer's favourite shots.

"At 7ft 1in, anything Irfan bowls can surprise you early in the innings. At least Roy is off the mark for the series now."

  19. Eng 5-0published at 1 over

With two slips in, Jason Roy tests out mid-on and mid-off's ground fielding, before opening his account by guiding Irfan through point for four, sparking the (rather loud) PA music system into life, and a scampered single ensures he keeps the strike. Pakistan's shirts have small splodges of dark blue on the cuffs and waistbands, as though they've been dipped in an inkwell.
