Here we go then... Shahid Afridi is on a hat-trick. James Vince picks the leg-break though and works a single into the leg side. Calm is restored. For now.

  3. Eng 51-3 (Vince 13, Morgan 2)published at 7 overs

England skipper Eoin Morgan is at the crease a little earlier than he anticipated 10 minutes ago.

A sedate, watchful start as Pakistan rattle through a cheap over. In other news, there's a Shahid Afridi lookalike in the crowd. He's almost the spitting image - just a couple of lbs heavier.

The real Afridi is on a hat-trick now...

"Pakistan fans in the ground are up on their feet and the queues of fans waiting to get in need to rush in and see this - Afridi is on a hat-trick!"

Boom Boom has shaken the room.

Or, to be more precise, the England dressing room. He takes two in two, this time Moeen punching back a simple return catch.

Tic-tic-tic-tic, Boom, as the Fresh Prince would say.

"Afridi is the man who gives England problems - he got three wickets the other night and was very economical.

"He surprises batsmen with his speed - he skids the ball through and it whipped through Root before he knew it and clipped leg stump."

If you need a job doing, do it yourself. Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi picks up the ball and instantly stems the scoring. A couple of singles later and a spinning top of a delivery bowls Joe Root. That will check England's progress.

  10. Eng 46-1 (Vince 12 off 10)published at 5 overs

James Vince has hardly had chance to take advantage of opening the batting yet, such has been Joe Root's imperious form, but the Hampshire man gets rolling with a thump down the ground which brings two (courtesy of a misfield). Then he clips four through mid-wicket. England have got two Jaguars in fourth gear now. Classy stuff.

"Well that's what is going on with the T20 World Cup."

  12. Eng 37-1published at 4.2 overs

Joe Root is talked about in the same sort of company as Geoffrey Boycott and Michael Atherton in the longer format.

In the T20 game, he's more like Matthew Hayden - pumping the Pakistan quicks all round the ground. This time it's another muscular boundary through the off side.

Curiosity: Strong batting line up = strong IQ. Like a strong IQ without hard work leads nowhere; an unused batting line-up leads nowhere.

  14. Eng 33-1 (Root 24 off 15)published at 4 overs

When I grow up, can I have the ability of Joe Root please? He's not just a Test star you know. Root proves that by clobbering Mohammad Irfan over extra cover for another boundary. Just a four this time though.

Joe Root... that was like Michael Vaughan in 2002-03 down under. The England bat rocks on a short-ish ball from Mohammad Irfan and flicks it for six into the leg side. Easy peasy.

Aamer Yamin is bowling at 80mph, but he charges in like he's about to deliver a 100mph nose trimmer. Joe Root's got his measure though, leaning into another boundary - this time through mid-wicket. Elegance personified.

Have a look at this. Lord's has its first Christmas tree of the year (a touch early, but we'll let them off).

Is there such thing as a cricketing Christmas tree? Have you ever been padded up next to the tree? Have you got a cricketing Christmas decoration? Maybe an Ian Botham bauble? Or a Mike Atherton stocking. Send us your pics.

  20. Eng 15-1 (Root 8 off 7)published at 2.1 overs

Welcome to international cricket, Aamer Yamin. The T20 debutant over-pitches to Joe Root and the England batsman peels off the most delicious of cover drives to the boundary.
