Replays of that Bavuma wicket show just how low it kept. Barely knee-high from back of a length. Plenty of encouragement for England, who will have the luxury of bowling last. Speaking of bounce, JP Duminy gets into a tangle to a riser from Finn, taking it on the shoulder, before again almost offering a leading edge. Problems for Jean-Paul so far.

"Stuart Broad has more than stepped up to the plate in the absence of Jimmy Anderson. He's in magnificent form. It's the best I've seen him bowl."

  3. SA 147-5 (Elgar 75, Duminy 2)published at 07:47

There have been some rumours floating around this morning that AB de Villiers might be set to retire. They have turned out not to be true, but he sits in the dressing room like a man pondering something. Probably how this South Africa batting line-up isn't what it used to be. Broad again in the glorious morning, now over to Duminy, whose wristiness has him a candidate for a leading edge.

  5. SA 144-5 (trail by 159)published at 07:42

Steven Finn shares morning duties, scooting in to the so-far immovable Dean Elgar. Only two slips and a gully - England will probably be hammering the other end. Finn angles the ball across the leftie and gets guided to third man for four, then twice gets worked on the leg side.

"It's hard work going into cricket without any runs to your name. Ask any club cricketer - it's no different - how difficult it is if you've not scored many in your last five games and then you have to play one of the big teams."

  7. SA 137-5 (Broad 11-6-16-4)published at 07:37

Three slips, a gully and a short leg. Broad immediately round the wicket to the left-handed Duminy, who has been found runs rarer than hen's teeth. Broad probes and completes a wicket maiden to very warm applause.

Is Bavuma unlucky there? He actually lost his leg stump. How often do you see those miss the timber and scoot to fine leg? Geoffrey Boycott summed up the delivery perfectly - it was innocuous, shot, wide and with no great pace. Still, any club cricketer will tell you that bad balls get wickets. JP Duminy is the new batsman.

"It was an innocuous delivery, not Broad's fastest because he's still loosening up. It wasn't a grubber but it kept lower than you'd expect and the batsman was unlucky but who cares if you are Broad?"

Bowled him! Second ball of the day and Stuart Broad has struck again. Temba Bavuma is undone by a lack of bounce and a lack of footwork. The ball is short and wide of off stump, with Bavuma playing a sleepy poke. He gets an under edge and the ball cannons back on to the sticks. The perfect start for England, who are now in charge.

Stuart Broad (who else?) has ball in hand, loosening up in some fresh whites. 'Play' says the umpire. Bavuma on strike. Two slips and a gully.

Applause in Durban tells me that there is activity and bodies emerging from the pavilion.

First the umpires, then the Alastair Cook-led England, then not-out batsmen Dean Elgar and Temba Bavumba.

It's picture perfect on the east coast of South Africa. Sunshine, blue sky, a wall of cotton-wool cloud on one side of the ground.

England batsman Nick Compton, who was born in Durban, on Sky Sports: "To stand there and see one of the world's best bowlers firing up at me I had to count myself lucky, or unlucky!

"It was always going to be tough, but it was important to set good foundations.

"Being back at Durban fuelled more hunger. Taking the sentiment away, it's a job and there was business to do."

"I think England are sitting pretty. South Africa's batting is slightly worse than England's and when you keep getting out it does your head in. You don't feel confident, you have to get to 25 by hook or by crook, but you are scratching about for runs. I will be very surprised if England don't get a lead and that will be priceless on this pitch."

So what do you make of all this? A cracker, a turkey, or is someone set for a stuffing?

Can England keep the foot on the gas and take a first-innings lead? Or will South Africa get to 303 and beyond?

And what about a cricketing 12 days of Christmas? More on that later.

Yep, the Boxing Day Test between South Africa and England in Durban is turning into something of a Christmas cracker.

In reply to England's 303, the Proteas have struggled to 137-4. Evenly poised. A crucial third day.
