13:37It is Elgar, so the murky light prevents England from facing the beasties. You can see the wind has risen - it blows the whites of the players. Left-armer Elgar is round the wicket, skipping and firing the ball in back of a length. When he gives it some air, Bairstow gets a thick edge past slip for a couple. England tick another one off.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special"I thought they'd go with Morne Morkel first but this is a sign that South Africa seem to be thinking the chance has gone now."

13:34I think the spinner Piedt is only bowling because of the light. If a pace bowler was on the umpires might start getting twitchy. Maybe Dean Elgar at the other end? Piedt finds some turn, but also the wide blade of Moeen's defensive stroke. There are 36 overs left in the day.

13:32It is still very gloomy in Cape Town, mind. How long might the weather hold for? Dane Piedt to Moeen Ali.

13:32Hello, the covers have been removed. The umpires are out, the South Africa fielders are out and the England team have been dragged from the dressing room. Still work to do for the tourists.

13:27Thanks Phil. I arrive with the news of rain. The sort of rain that causes the covers to be brought on. It seems likely that the post-tea resumption will be delayed.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special"It's been a good day for Test cricket. The only way I can see South Africa winning it is if they take these four wickets in five or six overs. They'd need 25 overs to chase 190 or so."

13:25Jonathan Agnew has just reported on TMS that it is still drizzling slightly, so there is a small chance we may not resume promptly after tea. We'll keep you updated on that.
In the meantime, I'm off now so will leave you in the capable hands of Mr Stephan Shemilt for the final session of the Test. Goodbye you.

13:22Former South Africa bowler Makhaya Ntini is speaking now on Test Match Special. He has had this to say about Temba Bavuma - who became the first black African to score a century for South Africa yesterday.
"It gives me hope that there will be a change. We are struggling to break through. We always have to be more than anyone else regarding performance."

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special"I think this partnership has just done enough, but it's not completely safe yet. South Africa have bowled very well."

13:12Elgar varies his pace to Bairstow, firing in a quicker one or two, but the Yorkshire player is wise to him. He sees off another over - a maiden - before turning and marching back to the tent. Job done for now. We go again after tea.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special"I hope the England players have a look in the mirror after this match. I felt there was complacency this morning. They thought there was nothing in the pitch but there was some cloud cover and we saw some reverse swing, but their mentality wasn't right. It's harder to bat today but they shouldn't be six wickets down on here."
Eng 155-6 (Minimum 38 overs remaining)published at 13:08
13:08There is the first sense now that South Africa's hopes of a win are starting to diminish. They were bouncing around the field 10 overs ago but the volume has dipped as Moeen and Bairstow have grown in assurance. Morkel isn;t nipping it around like he was either and Moeen milks him for another couple of runs with a clip through midwicket.

13:05Hashim Amla sticks with Dean Elgar but he produces no further scares as Bairstow adds two more to increase England's lead to 155. Effectively, with tea looming, we've got 37 overs left today. Not over by a long shot, but this partnership are giving England a good chance.
