A camera down on the boundary boldly showcases a single drop of rain - the first of a few. It's spitting! It's spitting! What we need are some 1980s dinner ladies out there. They'd have everybody in. No time to think about that, though. Morkel is back. He jags one back into Moeen, drawing a half-hearted lbw shout, but it was definitely sliding down. Other than that, Moeen copes well.

"That was quite clear to me but it seems to take ages for the third umpire. That should give Bairstow a little reminder that there's no need for big drives. Bat out another 15 overs and England will be fine. I think Bairstow thought he had gone the way he reacted."

Pete: Your Kabbadi reference may be lost on younger fans but I like to think Bairstow scampers each run chanting 'Kabbadi...Kabbadi..'

Ben Clarke: Is it me, or does Jonny Bairstow look a bit like the WWE's Undertaker under that helmet?

Having survived that attempted stumping, Bairstow revels in his continued presence at the crease by rocking back and smashing a cut to the cover boundary for four. Table mountain is now completely cloaked in cloud. The lights have been on for a while.

Phew. England breath again. Bairstow is saved by the length of a toenail. The England man took his helmet off and looked very worried but after watching numerous replays and taking an agonising age, the video umpire deems safe. Paul Farbrace hammers his hands together in utter relief in the dressing room. Sit down, Broady. You're not needed. Yet.

Big moment! Is this a stumping? Elgar comes into the attack and beats a drive from Bairstow before the bails are whipped off. The home side think they have their man...

"I think South Africa have missed a trick here. As soon as Moeen Ali arrived, the skipper should have asked Morne Morkel for three overs. He's getting loose now."

Encouragingly for England, they are not just defending everything here. These two know they need to keep the scoreboard ticking. Such is Bairstow's urge to milk every run he can he slips at the striker's end after driving through cover in search of a third, drops his bat and has to "tag" in like a desperate Kabaddi player following a raid. The Yorkshire player adds three more off the last ball of Morris' over.

"I think South Africa would try to chase 180 in 20 overs, temporarily. Stiaan van Zyl is a dead man walking, so he can go out and enjoy himself. Quinton de Kock opens in limited-overs cricket. AB de Villiers is a genius and Faf du Plessis is the T20 captain."

Like Ant-man, Bavuma can get into places others fail to reach. He is as close as you can possibly get on the off side as Piedt continues to maintain the pressure on Moeen. I'm sure he'll be offering a few "encouraging" words to the England pair too. Another maiden. Another over gone.

More Chris Morris. He veers off line badly, flicks Bairstow's pad and beats the keeper down the leg side to gift England four leg byes before allowing enough room outside off for the same man to cut for four more. Vital runs.

What's this? A huge dark cloud and the floodlights coming on. Hmmm. England can't rely on that, though. They don't deserve to be saved by weather. Piedt continues with fielders all around the bat. Bairstow capitalises on a full one to drive through cover for three, before Moeen adds two more to take the lead to 136.

Chris Morris returns. No Day Today references now. This is too tense. Ali takes him for two and the batsman survive but that is not the main news. The main news is a man sleeping in the stands who is being thoroughly mocked by the rest of the crowd, including a fella who dances behind him with his shirt off. When all else goes to pot, take the mickey.

Bairstow came into this innings having scored 79 and 150 not out, so he's in form. But he likes freedom and that is one thing he most certainly does not have in this innings. He shows the requisite discipline to see off another Piedt over. That is three maidens on the bounce. Tick em off. One by one.
