Well, I'm not sure any of us were expecting that, were we?

What an end to this second Test. Hashim Amla resigns as South Africa captain after making a double century and a pretty decent performance from his side.

When we pitch up in Johannesburg, the Proteas will have AB de Villiers in charge.

Richard Thomas: "Amla has history here. Given up the captaincy of several sides over the years. Clearly a reluctant skipper. Damn fine bat, tho."

England captain Alastair Cook on Hashim Amla's resignation: "You're under pressure as a captain for a lot of the time.

"He'll have his reasons and I wish him all the best - he's a really nice guy.

"I did ask if he planned to have a couple of Tests off, but unfortunately he's still planning on batting against us.

"It's always sad when someone steps down, because to captain your country is a huge honour and a real privilege."

Craig Woodhead: Leave work with Amla as South Africa captain after a good draw, arrive home and AB De Villiers is captain.

For some reason, Sir Alex Ferguson has popped into my mind.

Whoever followed Graeme Smith as South Africa captain was going to have a tough job, just like the man who followed Fergie into Old Trafford. Hashim Amla is playing the David Moyes role in this story.

Does that make AB de Villiers the Louis van Gaal?

Wyndham Hacket Pain: After many England captains resigning against South Africa, it is refreshing for for this trend to be reversed.

More from Hashim Amla: “Throughout my time as captain, whether in good times or tough times, I’ve always had the full support of my team mates, coaching staff and management. I want to acknowledge this superb group of people for always being there and for supporting me wholeheartedly."

Paul Hawkins: So after rumours AB De Villiers to quit Test cricket, he's now Proteas captain after Hashim Amla resigns? Wow

The daft thing about of all of this is that there were rumours about AB de Villiers retiring during the first Test. The man himself even spoke of lightening his workload. Taking on the captaincy is not a way to do less work.

Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat: “We respect Hashim’s decision and the manner in which he thought about it and then communicated with me. It was consistent with his well respected personality.

“He still has a huge role to play in shaping the success of our team without the need for a leadership title. He is just that type of a person and we are very fortunate to have him in our stable.“I want to thank AB for readily accepting the challenge of rebuilding our Test team as we seek to remain the best team in the world."

Simon Coston: De Villiers to open the bowling as well in the next test? He's done pretty much every other job for SA this series.

More from Hashim Amla: “Naturally this decision is not an easy one but the more I think about it the more I believe I can be of greater value to the Proteas as a fully focused batsman and senior player at this time of rebuilding our team.

“I am deeply grateful and privileged to have been the Test captain and I wish to thank CSA for the honour of captaining my country. It was enjoyable and indeed a great learning experience.”

  18. Amla resignspublished at 15:48

Hashim Amla was the surprise choice as South Africa Test captain when Graeme Smith retired in 2014.

Previously seen as a reluctant leader, Amla led the Proteas in 14 Tests, winning four, drawing six and losing four.

More from AB de Villiers: “At the moment my priority and focus is placed on leading this team to what can be a memorable series win against England.

"This Test squad is motivated and determined to turn our performances around and I’m looking forward to taking up that challenge as captain. Hashim is a good friend and close colleague and I am grateful for his support.”
