This is Australia captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner going soppy over a puppy.

Now, I like puppies as much as the next man, but what happened to hard-nosed Aussie skipper? You would never have seen Allan Border doing this, would you?

Stokes continues with the bumpers to Amla, who is not at all rattled. As the sun dips behind a cloud, Stokes gives the same treatment to Duminy, who is similarly comfortable. It feels like England's bubble has been burst.

"There's been a lot of talk about a total for maybe declaring, but you have to be aware of the weather as well. I don't think we'll get the full amount of overs in today - it looks like there could be a bit of a thunderstorm on its way. That will be preying on AB de Villiers' mind."

Moeen is withdrawn and replaced by Chris Woakes, who might well be bowling for his Test future. If he is, it's not a good start. Short, wide and four to JP Duminy. He returns with a good un, beating the outside edge. That's been the story of his Test, a mixed bag. Undercooked, or not quite good enough?

John M Butt: I do not see how two quick wickets or even 5 can save Anderson. One good spell does not make a series.

"England have bowled fantastically well this morning, they got the ball to swing. But South Africa are still very much ahead of the game. They were always only going to need one partnership to break England's spirit, and maybe this is it."

Outrageous scenes on the live text desk. Patrick Jennings, my right hand man, pulls out a sandwich that apparently includes tahini. Tahini? I don't even know what that is. England change plan to Amla, setting the trap for some short stuff. Ben Stokes tunes up the band for the chin music, but Amla is good with ducks. A bit like AB de Villiers...

England have been forced into an in-out field for Duminy. There's three catchers for Moeen, but also men on the leg-side fence. That creates opportunities for singles, with every one making England's mountain a little higher. Time for a rest, Moeen?

"This is good aggressive play from JP Duminy. South Africa don't want to go into their shell - they want to play like they're over 200 runs ahead.

"Even if they lose a couple of wickets looking to score they'll still be 300-odd ahead before tea, which will take some getting."

  11. SA 83-3 (lead by 216)published at 32 overs

You just get the feeling that South Africa have come through that little storm. Amla has looked good all morning, Duminy is now settled and runs are coming a touch more freely. England still striving, but the sunny conditions that we thought would be good for batting and now looking just that. Amla guides Stokes to third man for four.

It's taken us a little while, but we've managed to dig out a wagon wheel of AB de Villiers' knock today.

And his effort in the first innings.

And what he managed in the second innings at Johannesburg.

Sixer! Duminy lofting Moeen over mid-wicket. Not only a scoreboard problem for England, but the ball landed in a mini swimming pool in the bar area of the ground. That was well populated at the weekend, but it's empty today. Some new leather is required.

"This is turning out to be a good cricket pitch. It's allowing people to play shots, it has a nice bounce, but then when bowlers have got it dead right there is enough to make life quite a bit uncomfortable."

  15. SA 66-3 (lead by 199)published at 30 overs

When there's swing around, Ben Stokes tends to find it. Round the wicket to the left-handed Duminy, scooting in with a bandage on his right arm. Off-stump channel, three slips. A good maiden to start.

Anderson is done, which is good news for South Africa. Ben Stokes on, his introduction from the stadium announcer drowned out by music that has been cranked up to 11 throughout the match. She's Got The Look by Roxette. It's 2016, who still listens to Roxette?

Not a great deal for England to shout about as Amla plods forward to Moeen. Beard defending beard. Moeen is doing his job in that he keeps the pressure on with a maiden, but it's not the dynamite you feel will be required to remove the former skipper.
