As long as Amla remains, South Africa are winning this Test. Worryingly for England, he's in a pipe-and-slippers mood. Relaxed, patient, taking each opportunity to score. At the other end, Duminy is feeling his way, examined by Anderson. In, out. Anderson has had six overs this morning, 2-7. Maybe one more?

Remember when Alastair Cook's captaincy was regularly panned? I'm not saying he's turned into Mike Brearley, but there's been definite improvement over the past year. Duminy, under pressure, is surrounded by ring fielders. No one out, no easy single. Better from Moeen, so JP is kept under the pump.

  5. SA 65-3 (Amla 28, Duminy 5)published at 26 overs

It's a fascinating, delicate balancing act for England. They can only win this match with wickets, which means attacking, which means risking runs. But every run makes South Africa a little safer. Anderson, looking five years younger than he did one day one, sprints in to Amla, the watchman. Four through the covers, a screaming drive.

  7. SA 61-3 (lead by 194)published at 08:43

The presence of left-hander Duminy, who had a nightmare against the spinners in India, prompts the introduction of Moeen Ali. Moeen not quite right, though, allowing Duminy a sweep for four. England can't be too cavalier here, they probably can't afford to give away anything more than another 100 runs.

"This is a real contest. We've been waiting for Jimmy to bowl like the Jimmy we know. He's racing in."

  9. SA 53-3published at 24 overs

Amla faces up to the charging Burnley Express Anderson, who also tests the former skipper with inswing. When it's a touch awry, Amla gets a leg bye to let Duminy face the music. Duminy pulls out when a bird distracts him - that's one way of surviving for a little longer - then squeezes away a very streaky inside edge.

Chris Lennon: Slating Jimmy Anderson before the Test worked out a treat for you didn't it, ABdV?

Mark Saville: Write off Jimmy A at your peril! Oh Jimmy Jimmy!

Tom Dobson: He we go again, the Anderson show now.

  11. SA 50-3 (lead by 183)published at 23 overs

In the space of three James Anderson deliveries, this Test match has sprung to life. South Africa still have the whip hand at effectively 183-3, but stick another couple of cheap ones on there and there will be some squeaky bums in their dressing room. Every ball an event, Broad examining Amla with some in-hoop. Amla, so calm he could probably snooze through a major earthquake, is watchful around off stump.

Looking again, it's absolutely perfect from Anderson, the seam pointing to fine leg and the ball arcing in. The pace? High 80s. The scream from Anderson in AB's direction? Very, very loud. JP Duminy arrives to see off the remainder of a double-wicket maiden.

What do you think of Jimmy's bowling now, AB? Still think he's lost a bit of pace? That inswinger was certainly too good for you, and now you've bagged a pair. Perhaps you should have kept your mouth shut, eh? Brilliant from Anderson, who set De Villiers up with the outtie, then pinned him with the inner. De Villiers has three ducks in a row and England might be back in it.

Second ball! Has AB de Villiers bagged a pair? A James Anderson in-ducker has trapped him in front, but has he hit it?

Gone! Lovely from James Anderson, who has belatedly arrived in this Test match. Full, late swing away from the right-hander, who is drawn into the sort of cover drive that he doesn't usually play. A healthy edge through to Jonny Bairstow. Where was this in the first innings, Jimmy?
