  1. Eng 169-6 (Wiese 8-0-44-0)published at 36 overs

Wiese with a rank wide delivery. Say it ain't so. (One for the alt rock fans out there.) Anyway, Root climbs into and leathers it through point for four. Wiese over-corrects and almost gets the same treatment on the leg side but Chris Morris makes a good save on the rope.

Rachel T: Broad only needs a hot streak of 10 deliveries. Keep the faith people!

Chris Baldwin: I may be clutching at straws but isn't this the same ground Stuart Broad took 6/17 4 weeks ago? Maybe it's not over just yet

Richie O'HaraBeamand: What a fickle bunch we are! So many people ready to tear this team apart at the fall of a wicket! The game's far from over!

  4. Eng 161-6 (run rate 4.60)published at 35 overs

Chris Morris has really embraced today's pink theme. As well as the kit, he's got a smear of pink paint across his cheekbones. It's like something Adam Ant would have worn in his 80s heyday. Du Plessis with the umpteenth sprawling stop of the day to save four at backward point, before ABDV fires over with the stumps at his mercy. Root was a goner...

Neil Chamberlain: 2 years ago we would have been ecstatic if England were going at 4.3 per over, how times have changed

Neil Peter: Moeen has not done anything with the bat for over a year, Bairstow should be in this side

  6. Eng 159-6 (Root 69, Woakes 19)published at 34 overs

Cute as a pug in a rug from Woakes, just opening the face and tickling David Wiese fine past the keeper for four. Woakes pops a single to square leg and that brings up the 50 partnership between these two - a very important stand for England, but they need plenty more. Root dabs a single square and that's his 2,500th run in ODI cricket. That's going straight on the CV when he gets home.

  7. England women fight backpublished at 13:56 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2016

Danielle Hazell has taken two wickets in two balls to improve England's chances of clinching the one-day series against South Africa.

The off-spinner dismissed opener Trish Chetty for 66 and then trapped captain Mignon du Preez leg before for nine to reduce the hosts to 134-3 in the 33rd over in Centurion.

England are defending their 262-9 as they seek to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

"Root is giving himself a fair bit of freedom. Even though he's got Woakes there, he's taking a bit of a punt. There's still 17 overs to go, but he's setting himself for some big shots."

  9. drinks break

    Drinks breakpublished at 33 overs

    Eng 151-6

Now, hang on, what's going on here? Jason Roy and Ben Stokes sitting in the England dug-out, chowing down on a couple of hot dogs. That's not the lunch of an elite athlete, surely? Imagine if Andy Flower had caught the players with a mouth full of frankfurter, and mustard and onions down their shirtfront. He'd have been livid. Luckily, Aussie Trev seems like a more relaxed kind of bloke. Root gets four with a flash through third man and it's time for drinks.

Stuart Mitchell: People need to calm down you will get the odd bad performance along the way with England for all the 3/400 scores a 150 will happen.

Bobby Bridgeman: Let's not forget that SA are a very good team & are allowed to do well. If England lose today it sets the last match up perfectly!

Matthew Buckland: Think England must be mesmerized by that pink South African strip!

  11. Eng 143-6 (Wiese 6-0-30-0)published at 32 overs

I've just clicked on a profile of David Wiese on a certain cricket website, and he looks very different in his photo to how he does here. Current Wiese: floppy haircut, cowboy-style stubble. Old Wiese: spiky on top, handlebar moustache and 'soul patch' under the chin - like a cross between Mitchell Johnson and the lead singer of an indie rock band. Anyway, he's the man that England have decided they need to target: Woakes pulls him over square leg for four and Root adds another boundary with a leg-side smash of a short ball.

Well, that's something. Joe Root lofts a drive into the off-side and scampers back for two to bring up his fifty. Well batted sir. He'll be eyeing a century like a bulldog eyeing a plump salami in a delicatessen window. But apart from a single off the last ball, that's the only scoring shot of the over, and England are still making heavy going of this.

Paul Howley: Well I guess a final game series decider is better than 3 dead rubbers. Cricket is the real winner here (well and SA)

Rob Meech: No surprise to see England struggling on a quick, bouncy pitch. So often they've been their undoing

The Void: Both England teams struggling. Need some magic from Root, Brunt, everyone...

If there's one thing that will give England a glimmer of hope, it's the reassuring sight of young Joe Root at the crease. YJR has been very much a man for a crisis in his nascent international career: always bailing out a sinking ship or patching a leaky innings. De Villiers gives away a run with an attempted run-out, but apart from that it's another tight over from South Africa - just three runs from it.

Oli Major: England just lost 5 wickets in the time it took me to try on a pair of shoes.

Peterfeet: So 5 of top 7 contribute 15!! Between them terrible. Where is the thinking? Lots of soft dismissals. Brainless.

Ruari Crichard: I think the last two games have highlighted how England are nowhere near ready to win World Cup yet. Consistency wins, not 2/3 performances.

  19. Eng 122-6 (Tahir 7-0-28-3)published at 28 overs

We're being treated to a montage of South Africa's best bits it the field today - a succession of elastic arms, superglue mitts, bullet throws and sprawling Manuel Neuer-style saves in the covers. It's been impressive stuff. One man who doesn't quite fit into that all-action fielding template is Imran Tahir, but he's doing it with the ball - just four from another good over.
