Whadda catch! What a brilliant catch by Hashim Amla! Ben Stokes goes second ball, prodding forward at Imran Tahir, edging towards slip, where Amla has to dive to his right, snatching the sharpest of chances in one hand. Tahir can't believe it, sprinting off in solo celebration, eventually finding himself at fine leg with only the crowd for company. England, meanwhile, are in deep trouble.

"Tahir's got away with one there. It pitched wide and was going wider, Morgan went to carve it through the off-side and didn't get the contact he was looking for."

Oh, skipper. This is pretty awful from Eoin Morgan, a dismissal he won't want to see again. Imran Tahir bowls a couple of googlies across the left-hander, with Morgan cutting at a shorter one but only getting a feeble top edge to Farhaan Behardien at point. Not great from Morgan, not great from England.

Jonners Baker: Hales? More like FAILS (admittedly good effort with the 50, but then this tweet just wouldn't have the desired punch)

Simon Richardson: If half-centuries won matches, Alex Hales would be world class. As it is, he flatters to deceive.

  5. Eng 92-2 (Root 31, Morgan 0)published at 19 overs

Looking again, it was actually a googly from Tahir, so Hales was hitting with the spin. Did Hales pick it? He certainly didn't get enough bat on the connection, sending the leather straight down the throat of sub fielder David Miller. Eoin Morgan in at four, so no promotion for Jos Buttler. The skipper watches as Joe Root drives aerially past the dive of the man at cover.

Hmmmm, this isn't great. Fifty and odd for Alex Hales, who, from his very next ball after he reaching a half-century, looks to hit Imran Tahir aerially against the spin and can only find the man at the deep mid-wicket boundary. After he spent time building a platform, England needed more from Hales, but that's a pretty soft wicket.

"Tahir has the nature of rushing through his overs as quickly as possible. He needs to calm himself down and make sure of the quality of each delivery."

    Eng 86-1

It's been fairly subdued, but Alex Hales has reached a sixth ODI half-century. The runs haven't always flowed freely, but he's kept it ticking, especially through third man.England need him to kick on...

Steve C Lawley: If had the chance I would change the law that allows a bowler to run out the batsman backing up. Ridiculous law anyway.

Blueballs: It's crazy that teams lose a review when it's umpire's call, that needs to be changed.

"Chris Morris is one of those bowlers who needs to be able to bowl with immense control, and he just hasn't been able to do it. His front leg gets way across his body, which stops his getting that consistency."

Jos Buttler waits in the England dressing room behind a pair of shades. I can't tell if he's got his pads or not. In the middle, with the sun still hiding, Joe Root shows a desire to get on with hit by hitting Morris over the covers for four. Some decent running from England, a wide from Morris, the best over for the tourists in a while. Time for a drink.

  14. Eng 72-1published at 16 overs

A good start from Tahir, who has a slightly waddling run-up. As the sun just dips behind a cloud, Tahir whips it down at good pace, with no huge sign of turn. Just back of a length, neither batsman able to manufacture the ball. Two from it.

"Imran Tahir's introduction is going to be a key moment in this game. England put him under some immense pressure earlier in the series, and with only one wicket down they're going to have the chance to do so again today."

"It's common sense to me to shuffle the bowling attack around. How can you justify not bringing in Stuart Broad when your bowling attack's been shredded in the last game?"

  18. Eng 69-1 (Hales 44, Root 15)published at 15 overs

Still Morris, a man who doesn't seem to have total control over his long limbs. There's bits of arm and leg everywhere as he lumbers to the crease. There's seam movement, exaggerated as Morris uses the whole width of the crease. Twice Joe Root is beaten, either side of Alex Hales being hit on the pads. England can't get away from a very impressive South Africa bowling performance.

Still Wiese in the beautiful sunshine, helped out by Hashim Amla at mid-wicket when he serves a leg-stump half-volley to Joe Root. There's a buzz inside the Wanderers, a hum, but the ground is far from full. If it fills up with Friday night revellers later and South Africa get going in a run chase, then it should be lively.
