It's been coming. After a very good South Africa start, England's frustration boils over and results in Jason Roy surrendering. It's good bowling from Kagiso Rabada, who puts his back into a bumper and gets it down at a good lick. Roy is late on the hook shot, getting it high on the bat and only finding Kyle Abbott at fine leg. A soft way to go, but the damage was done in the build-up.

Len Morrison: Makes sense bringing Broad in. Experience to get us over the line, and he'll still be rested at the World T20

Max Baggins-Craig: England know for a fact they've got the right tools to win, it was proved last year. They just need to believe more, I do.

After a couple of air shots, Hales gets the board moving again with an iffy drive over cover for four. To mark the occasion, the house DJ plays Toto's Africa, which I think we can all agree is a classic. Abbott, though, gives nothing else away. South Africa pretty in pink at the moment.

"South Africa are doing well. You feel that something's got to give. Either one of these batsmen is going to get out or they're going to find a gap."

Guy Tallentire: Still no Taylor in the England line up - could do with another steady accumulator in the middle order.

Luke Kellett: Woakes is so average, Broad for Jordan should have been the only change to ensure a series win here.

There's bounce from the slippery Rabada, with Hales top-edging towards third man. Good work by the fielder down there, typical of some decent work by the Proteas so far. If today is a batting day, then South Africa have started well with the ball. Two lengths from Rabada - just short and very full. Straight. Only three runs from the past two overs.

"If you get the length right as a bowler, you get a bit of movement. That's made Roy play and miss a couple of times."

"Beast it", Geoffrey? I think we'd all be curious to see Geoffrey enter his 'Beast Mode'. His forward defence becomes even more solid. Ooohhh, that's nice from the heavy-breathing Abbott, who finds some shape to beat the poke of Jason Roy. South Africa already down to one slip, but they might want to rethink that with the ball wobbling a touch.

"There's nice bounce, it looks a good pitch to play. The ball comes on nicely, and the bowlers have to bowl a good length or you will get hit. But you don't have to beast it - when South Africa got 400-odd, Herschelle Gibbs just played proper cricket shots."

Kagiso Rabada to Alex Hales, with the Notts opener easing his long levers into a cover drive that screams to the fence. Very quiet inside the Wanderers so far, the crowd perhaps waiting for the end of the working week to get involved in some Friday night lash. The square boundaries are only just over 60m. Jos Buttler could hit it that far with his bat upside down.

"You have to keep the slip in longer than usual because you know you have to get wickets. If you don't, you know you are going to be in trouble later."

What are the wheels that Kyle Abbott is wearing? Matching his kit, his spikes are entirely pink. It's like Disco Stu dropped a red sock in with his whites wash.

A line wide of off stump to Roy, two slips in place, the first ball pushed so far to be called wide. After that, Roy has a dip and gets nothing but fresh air, finally getting under way by lifting down the ground for four. Lovely shot, spoiling a good Abbott over.

"It is a problem batting first if you put too much pressure on yourselves to get 400 runs.

"We assume it will be full of runs but you have to get as many runs as you can rather than setting totals and piling the pressure on."

  15. Postpublished at 11:29

I've heard a rumour that the groundsman thinks it's a 400 wicket. No pressure on the England batting, then. South Africa's pink warriors swarm over the Wanderers as Alex Hales and Jason Roy make their way to the middle.

Russell Anderson: Broad for Jordan should have been the only change. Woakes so overrated can't believe he keeps getting in to an international team.

Small Man Peaky: Shouldn't have taken Willey out. He's been very solid for England has a knack of taking early wickets. Woakes is ineffectual.

Just as a little add to the England team, the two brought in - Broad and Woakes - are not in the squad for the World T20.

The two men dropped - Jordan and Willey - are.
