The pace of Adam Milne back on, still not a sniff of a boundary. Fours and sixes an endangered species in this innings. The India 50 is roared, then what sounds like a Mexican wave goes around the stadium. The required rate climbs up towards 11. How do you reach that when you haven't hit a four for eight overs?

"If India lose this one, the team we thought would dominate the tournament could end up really struggling to get out of the group. There are some really tough games to come."

Dhoni, making a last stand with only a cap on his head, now has Ravi Ashwin for company. Nathan McCullum is back on, with India still looking for their first boundary. So many glum faces in Nagpur, it's like the police have broken up their house party before they could play spin the bottle. In total, New Zealand's spinners have taken 7-23.

  6. Ind 45-7 (Sodhi 2-0-5-2)published at 11 overs

The strangest thing about this is that India should be more than used to these conditions. They played on slow turners while they were still in the womb. At the moment they are being spun out. At home. By New Zealand. Credit to the Black Caps, though. They got their selection right and they have bowled brilliantly. While Dhoni remains, however, there is still hope.

"Ish Sodhi was desperate to make that catch and he really had to make up ground on a dipping ball. Brilliant. On your World Twenty20 debut. New Zealand! Well, I cannot believe it. India are 43-7. Incredible."

    Jadeja c&b Sodhi 0 (Ind 43-7)

This is absolutely remarkable. India aren't just throwing away the first game of a tournament where they are hosts and favourites, they are rolling over and having their tummies tickled. They are being beaten at their own game. Ravi Jadeja is the latest to go, tamely patting a return catch to the diving Ish Sodhi. MS Dhoni isn't a batting partner, he's an eyewitness.

  9. Ind 42-6 (Santner 2-0-3-3)published at 10 overs

Apologies to Richard Illingworth, it was just clipping the leg stump. If we had DRS, Pandya would still have been out. Ravi Jadeja, who can do plenty of damage with the bat, is the new man.

"Brilliant again from Mitchell Santer, another one skidding on. Who would have thought it?! These are the games that get you into the tournament as a side. Beating the hosts, the favourites... There are a lot of very disappointed faces in the crowd. I thought this was going to be easy pickings for India."

Pandya lbw Santner 1 (Ind 42-6)

At first sight, this looks a shocker. Hardik Panya is given out lbw to Mitchell Santner, but is it sliding down? Not according to Richard Illingworth, who fires up the finger. Whether it's hitting or not, the scorebook says "out". India are further into the mire. I'm keen to see a replay, mind...

"You have to give Kane Williamson credit for bringing Ish Sodhi in when he has. The timing has been perfect, and India are really under the pump now. Their best option is just to take the game deep, pick up plenty of ones and twos, and go for it at the end."

  14. Ind 41-5published at 9 overs

Hardik Pandya, how are you feeling? He's the new man, in after Kohli's loose drive. He's back on the bench, looking like he could climb into a hole and never get out. He blasted his bat with his first as he walked off. Just like a million times before, India puts its hope in MS Dhoni. He's carried them so often, they should call him Atlas.

"You could not ask for a better ball, this wicket is really turning. Virat Kohli is so angry. He fished for it. India - the team we said had no weakness... this is really a surprise."

    Kohli c Ronchi b Sodhi 23 (Ind 39-5)

That's the big one! Virat Kohli is gone and you can hear a pin drop in Nagpur. Ish Sodhi, the leg-spinner, from his very first ball, gets one to turn, with Kohli following to get a feather through to Nathan McCullum. Ridiculously, New Zealand are favourites in this match. India is is mourning.

"Brilliant from New Zealand. This is what good teams are made of - bouncing back from an awkward situation with some fight. There's still a lot of work to do though."

  18. Ind 39-4 (need 88 from 72 balls)published at 16:30

Still Elliott, with India still looking for their first boundary. Tight in-field, nudging and scampering the order of the day, Kohli stroking the ball and instantly shouting "two, two, two". Once he gets his wish, once he doesn't. It's quite unbelievable that India have gone 48 deliveries without finding the fence.

If the rest of the World T20 is like this, we're in for a belter. Personally, I don't care if teams only put 50 on the board. When the cricket is as tense as this, it's absolutely compelling. Milne charges in, but Kohli still looks as relaxed as a man playing on the beach. His cover drive has more class than Grace Kelly.
